Early Reader Titles

The "Early Reader" book is seen as a transitional book between picture books and middle grade chapter books. Early Readers do have chapters, but they are also illustrated in a manner similar to picture books. Unlike picture books, which are generally read to a young child, Early Readers are generally the first books to be read by the child. The illustrations serve to assist the child in figuring out the meaning of the text, even if the child doesn't know all of the words.

Some noteworthy Early Readers include:

Nate the Great - Marjorie Weinman Sharmat - This Early Reader title is one in a book series that introduces the mystery genre to very young readers. Told in a wry noir style, Nate solves mysteries by following clues and making logical deductions about them. There is suspense, action, but no truly "scary" moments.

Mr. Putter and Tabby Bake a Cake - Cynthia Rylant and Arthur Howard - Mr. Putter wants to bake a cake for his neighbor, but he doesn't have the right ingredients or the right tools to get the job done. This warm and gently humorous title from the Mr. Putter and Tabby series demonstrates the comfortable friendship between man and cat, and the unconditional love each has for one another. Challenging words related to cooking are explained by way of illustration.

Amelia Bedelia - Peggy Parish - Parents may remember Amelia Bedelia from their own childhood. Now a series, the Amelia Bedelia titles play with literal meanings of words and phrases to develop humorous stories about a very literal-minded maid, Amelia Bedelia. Children will use both illustration and text to understand the humor of the stories, and double meaning of the words.

Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa - Erica Silverman - This popular series, about a girl and her somewhat lazy horse, Cocoa, uses repetition and mostly everyday language to tell adventurous stories in which Kate must outwit Cocoa to get things done. Challenging words, such as "saddlebag," mostly relate to horses.

Harry's Pony - Barbara Ann Porte - What kid wouldn't want to win a pony? When Harry really does win a pony in a contest, he's faced with the dilemma of where to keep it. The emotional arc in this story is complete - children will bond with Harry, understand his decision to donate the pony, and feel satisfied with the ending. The Harry series of books has a contemporary feel, with well-developed stories, characters, and a good dose of humor.

prokidwriter,

The Nate the Great series is especially good! I wish I could get my 9 year old to sit down long enought to read. He just finished "Reindeer do Wear Striped Underwear." (Bailey school kids book) The Black Lagoon series is also kind of good, but probably for younger readers.
