Why You Need a Sump Pump Basin

If you have a basement that is prone to flooding a sump pump is a good idea to have, this simple device will allow you to remove the water before it does any damage. While the pump itself is located about 2 feet below the floor of the basement, there is a lid on it that does sit on top of the basement floor.

The way a sump pump is surrounded by course gravel that filters out debris as water enters it and sends it out to the street, the cover is on top of it is to prevent anything from falling into it, it also acts as a barrier to prevent water or moister from seeping out of it.
The pump itself is located about 2 feet below the ground with a cover that sits on top of the cement. If you decide that a sump pump can be useful for you, then you will need to install the sump pump on your own or have it installed which can be very expensive.
All sump pumps should have a check valve located on it to prevent water from flowing back in.

Sump pump prices can vary depending on the horse power, lift and operational extras, such as alarms and if it can be backed up by a battery. The sump pumps that have a battery backup are usually good to have especially if you live in an area where the power is prone to go out, or if a storm that comes through happens to knock out the power.

The system can be wired to run off of the electrical system, or be plugged into a 3 prong outlet as long as it is grounded, and it can even be connected to the homes water supply, a backup pump can be run off a battery or a generator.
One of the cheaper models is an electric pump, with this type you need to be careful as not to get the motor wet. This one has a float in it and when water reaches a certain level the pump switches on.

There is an electrical pump that is met just to work underwater, as its motor is sealed, and it is oil cooled, it also works off of a float or it may have a switch that is located in side of the pump. You can usually find one of these pumps for about 300.

More About Sump Pump Basins

Remember that I mentioned earlier that a sump pump could also be connected into the municipal water supply; here is how this one works. Since water is pressurized as it flows through the main, suction is created and pulls the water out leading into the discharge pipe. This type of pump is usually used only as a backup in case of a power outage. These can cost as much as 400

Sump pumps that are ran off of a generator are also used as a backup, and in order to be able to run a pump off of the generator it has to be the proper one for the pump, you can find the number on the pump itself. When considering a generator you should also take into account how many other things are going to be run off it in case of a power outage.
For those that own older homes, or that do not wish to install a pump there is a pump that sits on floor, that will suck the water out. These types of pump will not get all of the water out of a basement. But the amount that is left which is only about an 8th of an inch will not do too much damage.

If you are going to use a sump pump you need to make sure that it is that correct unit for the job, otherwise you will be losing money.

There are a few things that you must take into consideration when you are buying a pump, these include the flow and the lift required to discharge the water, you also need to make sure that the pump has the right amount of vertical lift.

Since problems can arise the sump pump will need to be kept up and well maintained for it to do its job. Sometimes the float can get stuck and will need repositioning. Or the float may also fail to shut down the pump, this part will need to be replaced at least once a year, I have found this from experience. The pump may also get clogged, you should check on this at least once a month; also you will need to make sure that the discharge line has mot become frozen or clogged. Keep an eye on the battery, by checking it at least every couple of months will prevent headaches in the case of a flood.

In order to check the pump take the cover off of it and pour 5 gallons or more of water into it if it kick in like it should the pump is working, if not then you will want to schedule a maintenance call. Also if you have a pump that is not used often by using this technique a couple times a year will keep the motor from freezing up.
