Sun Conure Training
A sun conure is a stunning bird. His eye-catching golden plumage makes him one of the most popular conures chosen as pets. But, I must warn you. Conures are one of the loud-mouthed species in the parrot world. Repetitive screeching could be a problem with this handsome bird.
Screeching is much like screaming. It is a high-pitched scream that lets everyone know a sun conure is in the house. To look at him, you wouldn't think that he could send your family running for ear plugs. His body is golden, with yellow and green feathers. As a medium size bird he is around a foot in length.
Conures have a variety of personality traits. Some are cuddling birds like their friends the cockatoos. Some like to talk a fair bit and still others like to be the center of attention like most parrot species. People like them because they are not puny or large and intimidating. Like baby bear said, they are "just right".
As far as pets go, they remind me of a St. Bernard pup-very noisy. Conures are good birds for first-time bird owners, but not so apartment-friendly. What can I say; they are quite vocal. That repetitive screeching could be his attempt at rooster status or he could be suffering from something besides delusions of grandeur. However as you can see on this video they are very smart and capable of learning quickly! >>>>>>>>>
Sun conures, like any other parrot, need a balanced diet and plenty of play time. In the wild, birds fly for the majority of their lives. They fly in search of food, to escape predators, to breed, and to find a home. In a cage, birds rarely get to do what they instinctually are supposed to do-fly.
Time out of the cage is important for conures. They need to exercise (with supervision) and spend time in contact with you. These birds like attention so time alone is not a strong point for them.
Screeching can be a response to too many lonely days. When you can't be there, be sure that new and interesting toys are. They like to amuse themselves, so rope and ladder toys with snack treats hidden in them provide hours of entertainment. During evening hours, watch television or spend family time in his room. He won't have time to screech while he's having fun.
Try replacing his screeching with another sound. When he screeches, give him something else to say. At first he may think you have lost your mind, but his sense of fun won't let him not play along. Choosing a pleasant sound to replace the awful screaming is good for all concerned.
Before trying sound replacement, check his diet. He could be ill or hurt in some way. The next time you take your sun conure out of the cage, give him a thorough inspection. Especially check his feet. Arthritis or pain due to a thin perch can cause him to screech at you. Dirty water or old food would make me screech. Regular cleaning of his cage bowls will solve that problem.
Do all you can to ensure your Sun Conure is happy and healthy without jumping through his many hoops. A good bird/owner relationship is hard to find so don't give up on him. Training, patience, and lots of love will bring the both of you through the other side of a screaming problem.

NIce tips for dealing with the natural and very vocal behavior of the Sun Conure. This vocal behavior is actually common with most of the Aratinga conures. I have hand reared many of these birds, and the Sun is always the most popular. Many feel the Sun Conure is perhaps one of the most beautiful birds, but sometimes owners simply get so challenged with the vocalizations they will think about giving up the bird. Your tips will encourage folks to go the extra step to make the experience great, and create a super pet companion relationship. Thanks!
