"Sex And The City's" Samantha protects her skin with style!

Exaggeration but great concept

Okay, Okay...the hat's REALLY big!!! But for Sex and the City fans, has the character Samantha ever lived life on a "normal" scale? NO!

And the point of this column is to promote skin care! And, skin care with style! My husband just had a pretty good "scoop" taken out of one ear "shell" (what's that part called, top of the ear?) and the dermatologist said he needed to stop wearing baseball caps and start imitating the golfer Greg Norman's wide-brimmed "panama hat" style ... EVERY DAY!

Sun protection, more crucial than ever!

My hubby, and lots of people "of a certain age" really haven't processed just how much the ozone has changed in the last few decades...the SUN IS SCARIER, MORE DANGEROUS than it ever has been before!! Why? It's dangerous rays are "getting through" our atmosphere and endangering our skins more thoroughly than ever before! And, as we age, our skin becomes thinner and even less able to endure sun damage without serious serious consequences! The skin cancer foundation recommends a brim of 3 inches MINIMUM!

And for the style-ish part...Marc Jacobs and Oscar de la Renta were among two designers that promoted the floppy hat as a "must have" for Spring/Summer 2008...and not JUST at the beach or pool!

Tan today, Wrinkles and Scars tomorrow ...you decide

But it's not just older folks that need the information, our society's ongoing obsession with tanning affects all age groups. Just yesterday at the neighborhood pool I saw a woman who seemed to be in her thirties -- though, enviously, great trim body -- and she was truly walnut brown! She was so dark by early May, I felt sorry for her! Why? Because I know firsthand that the years between her age and a decade from now will pass sooooo quickly! But her skin will age even faster!!! Ten years from now she'll so be wishing she'd taken a tip from Nicole Kidman because she won't look forty-something, she'll look fifty-something and be at her doctor's having hunks of skin scooped out, leaving scars, and anxiously awaiting her biopsy results!

Good role models

In addition to Rene Russo's stylish sun hat in the movie Tin Cup (worn religiously while watching Kevin Costner's golf tournament), we've got to remember Pretty Woman! Julia Robert's sun hat with dress-matching trim was darling! But, think we'll ever wear gloves again? And, there are other venues promoting skin care/sun protection. Most women's fashion magazines are huge advocates of sun screen. Plus, they are great sources for reviewing, discussing, demonstrating the use of self-tanners, bronzers, etc. InStyle magazine, Allure, Vogue, are just a few I've seen that promote tans from bottles NOT the sun!

Vanity, Sanity and Economy

Allure magazine's May 2008 issue had an article about skin cancers written by a young dermatologist who herself has already had to have a skin cancer removed....Lots of great statistics there. The doctor is Ellen Marmur, M.D., Here is just one alarming bit of information from her column ..."Melanomas account for only 4 percent of skin cancers, but three quarters of all skin-cancer-related deaths. The fastest-growing segment of the population first diagnosed are women under 40-the sun-bed-tanning generation. (Indeed, a study in The journal of the National Cancer Institute showed that women who used a tanning bed at least once a month had a 55 percent higher risk of melanoma than nonusers, and for tanning-salon visitors in their 20s, the increase in risk was 250 percent.)"

Hopefully this column will have you donning a hat this spring and summer! And if the scariness of premature wrinkles, sagging and ugly-aging don't motivate you...let's hope the really valid worries about skin cancers keeps you in the shade!

AND if those aren't enough...economy! So many of us color our hair! Single Colors, Hi-lites, low-lites, grey coverage, male, female. AND the harsh light of sun will destroy that color!!! If you don't want to be running to the salon every two weeks to freshen up that expensive hair coloring, keep your locks under cover! BUT do it with Style!

The Beauty Editor at MORE magazine just wrote article about her own recent experience with basal cell skin cancer. Read her account at http://www.more.com/style/beauty/anti-aging/my-skin-cancer-shock/ It's candid information from the patient's perspective...and bettin' it'll convince you to find a great hat...and to wear it with style!

Excellent advice. Years ago I started snorkeling with a hat and T-shirt to protect my head and neck from the tropical sun.

One thing you failed to mention. If you are counting on a tan for attracting attention, you are going to be getting shallow attention. While I certainly notice those shapely tanned beauties, I find that I am truly more interested in someone that can share ideas and carry on a conversation. There is a real difference between someone that is just good as eye candy and someone you can develop a real relationship with. You don't need to burn yourself if you have some inner beauty.

Absolutely! Anyone could tell from my profile pic that no man's ever been attracted to my tan!!! And, luckily for me, there have always been "porcelain skin" role models for me...even when I was a pasty-white 13 year old begrudging my fair skin genes! Ann-Margret, Shirley MacLaine got me through some tough teen years. Now, Julianne Moore, Claire Danes, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, Reese Witherspoon, Michelle Williams, Cate Blanchett...all lusciously delectably flawlessly not tanned!

Great advice! I have many friends who went the fake-&-bake route, or the slather-baby-oil-&-sit-on-the-beach route and are unfortunately paying for it now via wrinkles and skin damage. Those of us who continually SPF'd ourselves and sat under an umbrella are still getting compliments that we look 10 years younger than our age.

HubSub, thanks for stopping by! Know you're one busy woman! Yep! Keep up that SPF...you'll get more benefits than just compliments!

Yep, a satellite hat...but as I said, the Samantha character was always known for being extreme!

Karen, find a hat for yourself and start wearing it out and about...each of us one at a time help set the styles in our areas! Best!

Desert Blondie - great HUB! I love hats, but never have really worn them. I agree that we need to be very, very careful about our sun exposure and realistic about a so-called "healthy" looking tan. You have some great pictures to go along with your excellent article here! Steph

Thanks for stopping by! to your point of "never really worn them" I remember that for YEARS I said I'd never wear Capris/cropped pants because I thought they looked so strange...and look now! We all wear them all the time! And remember when none of us ever wore a SPF moisturizer? I hope we're all past that stage! Remember when cars didn't have seat belts? Things change! Hats might just become as 'routine' as seat belts someday!

Fantastic hub - I never knew about the 3 inch hat brim - thanks for the tips! :)

I should have worn hats back in the 70's, but unfortunately, tanning was the big thing. Decades later, I ended up with a big hole next to my eye and 16 stitches! Not a fun procedure. Although it healed nicely, I ALWAYS put sunscreen on before I leave the house!! Thanks for the reminder Desert Blondie!

I have trouble squeezing through narrow places when I wear a hat. I do wear them in the sun. Good tip about baseball caps. My hubby wears those and if he gets his ear lopped where is he going to hang his glasses.

Thank you for this excellent hub. I hope young women will see it and heed your words of wisdom. Younger women ask me all the time what I do to stay young looking, and I tell them, stay out of the sun, stay out of the sun, stay out of the sun! No beauty cream, no plastic surgery, no treatment out there will produce better results.

This is an excellent hub, because the younger girls need to be told again and again that the tan that looks so great today, will make you plain ugly just a few years from now. I can say the same thing goes for tanning beds too, and in some ways they are even worse.

These women who bask in the beds look like they went a few rounds with a professional boxer. They look TOUGH! They have lost that attractive, soft look of youth, never to regain it again! And you are right, the sun is more intense, more deadly than ever.

I am a porcelian beauty, and I make no excuses for it. With green eyes, and reddish blond hair, the sun eats me right up. When I go outside, I cover up, and I try to stay out of the sun altogether from 11am to 2pm.

But the biggest reason I am careful with the sun is because I have seen friends with skin cancer, and it is not pretty. And, it can be and is often deadly. Sorry, to me a tan is not worth getting cancer.

One other point I would like to talk about, and that is young children and the sun. Did you know that children under the age of 2 should not be out in the sun at all? Also, the more sun burns you get as a child the higher your chance of getting skin cancer later in life. I cannot stress enough to be careful about letting your kids get too much sun. It is a deadly serious issue because the sun is more intense than in years past.

Skin Cancer is definitely not pretty and melanoma is downright deadly. I do hope that all of us will make buying and using sunscreens a TOP PRIORITY, and really watch that 11-2 time period as you noted. I'm sure, Magnoliazz, that your skin is a gorgeous as your photo shows! Here's to porcelain complexions!
