Summer Solstice:Sunrise at Stonehenge
62Summer Solstice :Sunrise at Stonehenge
A few years ago when I was living in North London I decided that it was time to make a pilgrimage to stonehenge for the summer solstice. For those who don't know there is a tradition amongst druids and pagans in the UK that a gathering takes place to celebrate the sun entering the zodiacal sign of cancer. On the night that I was there over 20,000 people had made the effort to spend time at this historic pagan monument and celebrate.
It is only occasionally that English Heritage allows this kind of mass public gathering so many of the partygoers had never been to stonehenge before let alone such a mass celebration.
At the time I was on a tight budget (£30 to get me to and from stonehenge from london) but I managed to get a return ticket to Salisbury for £24 and caught the 8pm bus to stonehenge itself.
I had had a strong intuition to make this journey for several months before without actually knowing why.As it turned out I met a fellow crystal healer at the stone circle and was able to pass on some advice about which stones would be appropriate for his issue.
The celebrations peaked at around 3am as a druid procession marched through the croud carrying fire and drumming as they went. The crowd grew silent and each made his or her own personal offering or prayer as the sun entered cancer.
Part of my reason for being at stonehenge was a strong intuition that one of my friends would be there, although I had not spoken to him about the possibility. As it turned out he wasn't present at the event although I did randomly bump into somebody who had very similar attitude and was carrying crystals in his backpack in the same way my friend would carry crystals. We chatted for an hour or so and then parted company, I was able to give him some good advice about a specific issue .
due to my financial limitations at the time I set off for a ten mile walk back to salisbury to catch my train.I left the site just as the sun was rising over the stones in spectacular fashion.
The walk took me about four hours and I managed to get a fast train back to Waterloo and arrived at about 1pm, tired from lack of sleep.I set off walking towards my flat in stoke newington but stopped at a chamber music recital in a church on holborn viaduct.
