When diet pills and weight loss shakes aren't working, many dieters turn to tea and other dietary aids to boost their metabolism and burn more calories. Tea has been used for thousands of years as a dietary supplement to cure many ailments and imbalances in the body, and continues to be a critical part of Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic therapies.

Many herbal supplement manufacturers and even organic food brands now offer a variety of tea formulations that suppress the appetite, improve the digestive system, and may help some people lose weight. Since some ingredients in tea can be used to detox the body, many dieters and bodybuilders turn to these to ‘cleanse' the system and remove toxin build up. But how effective are these dieting teas? What exactly do they contain?

How Diet Teas Work

All of these herbal ingredients can warm up the body slightly, and are not generally consumed to provide a boost of energy. However, many of these extracts are natural diuretics and digestive aids. What this means for most dieters is a natural ‘detoxing' effect after just a few cups. Common side effects of diet teas include:

• Cramping

• Abdominal pain

• Nausea

• Loss of appetite

• Increased bowel movements

• Sweating

• Dehydration

All of these problems can be difficult to manage, especially if a dieter is already cutting back on food or exercising more. Dieter teas are essentially mild laxatives that will clear your body of toxins very quickly; however, many people cannot tolerate these effects for an extended period of time.

Bottom Line: Few people realize the potential side effects of even herbal teas, and each flavor contains a unique formula with various herbs and extracts. Together, some of these ingredients can have adverse effects on some people. If you experience severe cramping or stomach pains after drinking these types of teas, these are all negative reactions to the herbal ingredients and eliminating these from the diet is recommended.

Eating a whole foods based diet, drinking at least 10-12 cups of water per day, and exercising each day can help the body eliminate toxins in a more natural way. Eliminatig processed foods from the diet is one of the simplest way to cleanse the system and naturally increases the chances of losing weight. Diet teas, herbal supplements, and even ‘natural' diet pills still pose a number of health risks and unwanted side effects.

Tried a few teas like these and they don't seem to bother my system too bad. A little stomach cramping, but more of an annoyance rather than something I can't deal with.

I drink this tea everynight. I love it. It's the only way I stay regular.
