Super Glam Hairstyle For Your Cat
75So What Is A Lion Cut?
A lion cut is a popular style for medium to long haired cats in which their entire body is shaved. The only fur left untouched is on the head, around the feet, and on the end of the tail. The result is a house cat (often a very annoyed house cat) that looks like a miniature lion. You can try this yourself if you have the right tools; but a professional groomer would likely do a nicer job, and would be less likely to cut or nick your kitty.
Why Would Anyone Do This To A Cat?
There are several reasons people choose the lion cut. If your cat is prone to matting, this pretty much eliminates the problem. Mats are unsightly, and very painful to a cat. They also restrict movement, and can hold some pretty foul odors. Mats are also a very convenient place for dander to collect. You can prevent them by frequently brushing out the fur, but depending on your cat's fur type, this could become a full time job.
If you have a problem with excessive shedding, the lion cut will get things under control. I can't think of a better way to get a handle on a problem, than by eliminating the source.
Some cats also have issues with hair balls. I'm pretty sure they don't enjoy coughing them up. And I know for a fact, they make for a nasty little surprise on your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night. The lion cut is a handy cure for these little land mines. No hair=no hair balls. End of story.
A cool summer cut. That's really the only time of year I would recommend this cut; unless you live in a warmer climate, or your cat doesn't mind wearing a sweater.
High fashion. Ok, the cat may not see it that way, but a lot of owners do. Some people seem to think that a shaved cat is just adorable. Personally, I think a hairless cat is less fun to pet, and it makes them look a little like a bobble head; but who am I to judge?
Some people swear by this cut, for its ease of care, and the appearance. Others say that it's a cruel thing to do to a cat. As I have already said, It's not my place to judge. I think you can make a fair assessment for yourself, based on the photos and video.
The cat at the right, here (see what I mean about the bobble head thing?) looks particularly annoyed. The one below doesn't seem to care about his new coif, or anything else for that matter.

A bobble head wearing Ugg boots. Short hair is good on people and cats.
I have to admit, i've seen it done more tastefully than these. I just couldn't resist these photos. I'm pretty sure my cat would never forgive me, either. And she wouldn't be caught dead in a sweater!
That first cat is humiliated. The one below him looks like it's wearing leg warmers and fur mittens. Poor, poor kittys. Less hair around the house, in your clothes and food, the whole hair ball thing - that would be great, tho.
Tried to watch your video, but alas, it's unavailable.
Great hub, RMR. Terrific slant for the HubMob, love it.
By the way....does the Lion Cut look good on Jackalopes?
On Jackalopes? Perish the thought. He would gore me before I made the first pass. I'll see if I can fix the vid. Thanks for the heads up.
That cat does look mad, and I would be too! Great Hub!
I had to do this to Foxy because of a matting issue. LOL! I wasn't sure, given her disposition, whether the groomer would live through the ordeal. Before we picked her up, I made my husband promise not to laugh at her and to reassure her how beautiful she looked. It was hard...I really wanted to laugh too. But she did truly believe she was gorgeous...and didn't have a problem with it at all.
I'm still pretty sure my diva wouldn't go for it. She lets us shave her mats, but even then she gets self conscious. She'll walk around bitc*ing at us for hours. Sometimes days.
love the photos!
Lovely entertaining Hub. We need those cats on our side, since B.T. Evilpants has gone Rogue with hair clippers in space... Jackalope Eye for the Space Guy sort of thing...
Thumbs up!
Thanks Patty! Sorry I couldn't get the window closed before he released the monkeys. On the bright side, they have a terrible sense of direction. I'm pretty sure they were heading due west.
That cat really is very mad. Looks like she has a good set of lungs on her though. I think I would only be patting this kitty on the head. Oh, poor kitty!
You know she's just waiting for someone to fall asleep. Hell hath no fury like a kitty scorned.
West - hahaha. headed for California movie careers.
Eviplants must have left T or C for awhile, huh? How'd your cat like the monkeys? Bucky Katt grills them. Say, Bucky might like a Jackalope... Sachel would go for a hairdo.
Actually, BT and Bucky are very close friends. Go figure.
lol I've shaved one of my cats myself before. Nothing to it. But it's the mean ones you have to look out for. o.o
Awww, that poor cat. It was so lifeless there getting shorn like a sheep. Funny as hell to look at when it's done, but, kinda sad to watch for some reason. Reminded me of the time my wife tried to shave our last kitty who had developed some rather horrific knots on her belly. She make like two swipes and cut the poor thing deep enough we had to take her to the vet (the cat, not my wife) and get six stiches. :(
What a great photo of the cat. LOL now that cat looked thrilled.
I'd never seen or heard of this kind of cat-do until a couple of years ago. A friend of mine told me she was going to get her long-haired kitty a *line* cut. I'd never heard of that, I told my friend, and I tried to imagine what a line cut might look like. Maybe the fur clipped in stripes? Maybe the fur clipped to an imaginary line, and no further? I didn't have a clue.
A few days after the line cut, I went to visit my friend and her kitty and couldn't believe what I saw. One very mad-looking cat with a fresh lion cut. My dear friend has a strong Pennsylvania-Dutch accent, and the way she says *lion* sounds just like *line*. Poor, poor kitty!
This is a neat Hub rmr. Thumbs up!
I totally agree with the ppl that said that cant don't need a hair style... However recently i became allergic to my cat so instead of giving her away or dropping her off at the shelter I decided to shave her (lion cut)... I feel better and the cat doesn't seem to mind!!!!

That's hilarious. Luckily, I've never had to do that to my cat. He would never forgive me. A friend at work got her cat cut this way this summer and he was mad at her for days.
