Surge protector- To stop the strong power surges!

If you own any valuable electronic equipment, then you just can't avoid a surge protector, the standard paraphernalia that serves a lot of purposes by letting you plug components into one power outlet. However, the most significant aspect and use of a surge protector is that it ensures the safety of the electronic components of your computer from power surges [transient voltages]. A surge protector effectively controls such unexpected increase in the voltage from exceeding the designated levels.

Power surges can cause considerable damage to electronic appliances by leading them to breakage or loads strain on them subsequently resulting in wear and tear. At this juncture a surge protector comes extremely handy, as it regulates the voltage supply to the electronic device by blocking this voltage spike. This is achieved by directing the excess electricity to the grounding wire. The most important component of a surge protector that enables this action is the MOV [Metal Oxide Varistor] that forms a connection between the hot power line and the grounding wire.

MOV spurts into action as soon as the extra current reaches it, the device diverts it into ground thus maintaining the voltage in the hot line at a normal level; MOV acts only when required and hence removes only the surge current without disturbing the standard current that powers the equipments connected to the surge protector. In short, the action of an MOV here is like a pressure sensitive valve, which acts only when the pressure is high. Other than MOV's a surge protector also at times manufactured by incorporating components like fuse, transformers, zener diodes, inductor, capacitor, or crowbar. Though all these components are useful in providing back up support, they all have their own limitations and do not prove to be as useful as an MOV. Thus it is the most durable component that serves the purpose of a surge protector.

In today's household where power surges have become a regular occurrence, a surge protector has become a necessity. But selecting a surge protector can be quite tricky. Do not end up in pitfalls choosing a worthless one. Before picking up the right surge protector for your home, check for the performance level and sign of quality. Choose surge protector depending on the devices that you would be hooking up to the power supply. For instance there is absolutely no need of hooking a bulb to a surge protector as it will only end up in burning it out. Instead think economically and install a surge protector only to your expensive and high end, electronic items. Powering your equipments while ensuring protection is a lot easier now with the help of a surge protector. Install it and protect your valuable equipments from break down.
