Are you an introvert in an attic room?

Being an Introvert in an Extrovert's World

The introvert has a quiet, inner strength. An introvert survives in an extrovert's world by staying "inside". The shy, quiet, dreamy introvert avoids the extrovert's world of parties, bars and clubs, drama groups and the social sidelines of sport clubs or the office. The introvert is content to be in the wings while the extrovert holds the limelight. But don't under-estimate the introverts. They are not passive non entities. They just have a different perspective, a different approach to the world.

The introvert does not shun connections with people. To survive in an extrovert's world, the introvert finds strength in "ONE" friend, or in very small groups of people. It is an intimate strength.

In the office, the introvert is rarely the manager. But the reliable, hard-working team member will often be the more introverted personality. Such a team member in the cut throat, extrovert world of a high flying business, is priceless! Here is the strength of "staying power"!

The introvert is a very good listener. While the extrovert loves to be the centre of the chat group, barely hearing or responding to others, the introvert listens and learns. The introvert is rarely a gossip; rarely holds lengthy chats about the "little fripperies" of life. But if you want someone to compare a range of opinions and offer a philosophical interpretation of the meaning of life, ask the introvert. The introvert usually speaks when there is something to say. The extrovert is likely to be amazed and maybe develop surprising respect for this "mousy" being. Here are the strengths of selflesness and patient consideration.

The introvert is the quiet achiever. While the extrovert is busy advertising all the wonderful humanitarian efforts he/she will be doing in Africa, the introvert is probably already there doing the job. When something needs to be done, the introvert rarely spends time talking about it; he/she just gets out there and does it. Many a genius, in the fields of art and research science, in particular, is an introvert.

And yet, in an emergency, when a life may be threatened, you may be surprised that the quick-thinking response may just come from an introvert. I was once an extreme introvert. Yet, when a motorbike rider lost control in the middle of a busy city street, I was one of the first to rush to his aid. I stopped traffic till police and ambulance arrived. After the event, reality hit me! I shivered and shivered and felt quite ill! Extrovert bravery from an introvert was just a fleeting experience for me! But I proved it can happen!

The introvert is often a subtle dresser. Loud colours, sensual lines and avant garde styles are not worn by an introvert. The introvert would prefer to be known for inner beauty. It may take a little time and perhaps patience to really get to know an introvert.

The introvert is often a home person. Here is the introvert's spiritual space and sanctuary. Neutral tones may grace the walls of the home, but there may be a display of unusual African statuettes, modern art pieces or wall to wall books on a huge range of topics. Candles and oil burners could litter every room. A Zen garden may grace the outdoors. Here is the heart of the introvert kingdom; the source of strength in an extrovert world.

Political leaders, managers, actors and party animals may be the "movers and shakers" of the world, but the foundation and the strength behind them is often the introvert. Extroverts need introverts for stability; introverts need the voice and "selling power" of extroverts. The introvert survives in an extrovert world because they both need the talents and skills of each other.

The introvert can be a powerful presence in the social world!

Power to the Quiet Ones

To really feel the power of an introvert, listen to this song called "Shy", played by young guitarist, Kieran Murphy. There is a soft strength in the ebb and flow of music. (His first CD is called "Chickenfeed".)

Kieran is a quiet achiever. He was interviewed recently by George Negus on ABC TV. He explained his amazing string of awards and touring commitments beyond Australia simply and quietly; no grand- standing. It just happened. Tommy Emmanuel, iconic Australian guitarist, invited Kieran to share his stage limelight. Kieran simply stated to George Negus that it happened.

In the world of "stage lights", Kieran must rank as an introvert.

An introvert with amazing power!

Kieran Murphy - Guitarist from Melbourne, Australia - Just 19 years old in 2008

Beautiful piece. I'm always looking for ways to understand "the self" and this was quite enlightening, thanks!
