How to Survive the Economic Downturns

We've been experiencing the turbulent economy for over a year now and it doesn't look like it's going away any time soon.  Companies have folded, been outsourcing more and downsizing in record numbers.  All of the media attention is just adding to the pressure and anxiety of today's workers who are still employed.  People are on edge wondering if their job might be under the axe next and it's no wonder they worry.  Surviving economic downturns can be difficult but don't give up hope.  There are things you can do to increase the likelihood of keeping your finances and career on track even in tough times.

First of all, get your finances in the best order you can just in case.  Pay off debt aggressively if possible and avoid taking on any new debts for the time being.  Reduce your household expenses where you can and start building up your contingency funds.  The experts recommend 8 to 12 months of income should be in your contingency fund these days as it is often taking longer to find a comparable position than it used to.  If you don't have that cushion, you need to work on building it until you do.  That will help supplement any unemployment benefits you could get should you be laid off.

As long as you do have your job and you're taking care of your financial picture, now is the time to focus on keeping your job.  Work on sharpening the skills you already have and also try to gain some new skills.  Taking a class may help with this or possibly any training programs available through your position.  The most valuable employees to a company are those who can perform multiple job functions.  This saves them money in the long run and protects your job because if one department is downsized, you may be able to easily move to another area of the company.

If the company you currently work for is experiencing difficulties already, you may need to hedge your bets and investigate opportunities within a more stable business.  RDG Careers would be able to help you in finding a comparable position because of their extensive network of connections within the various industries.  Often they know of positions available that are not made public but they could get you an interview once they know your skill set and experience.  Watch this video to see how they could help you navigate the world of Career Change and Pay Cuts.

Many people think of a professional job firm as being there to help those new to the workforce, such as new university graduates seeking an entry level position, but a good firm can help with any point in your career.  Whether you need to find a position, change career paths or find a similar position with a different organization, professional career planning can help you meet your goals.  The initial career consultation is free and can help you decide which direction you would like to go in so give them a call today and get assistance with mapping your career strategy for these turbulent times.
