In Japanese cuisine, sushi is vinegared rice topped with ingredients like fish. The thin sliced layer of fish is put on the upper side and is either cooked or uncooked. There are also some vegetables which one can put on the sushi.

Types of sushi

There are various types of sushi like some sushi is served rolled inside with ‘nori'. Some sushi is made with hand formed rice clumps as toppings. There is also some sushi that are toppings stuffed in a small pouch of fried tofu.

Ingredients used

The main ingredient used in sushi such as raw fish and rice are low in fat and high in carbohydrates, protein, minerals and vitamin. There are also some health risks in eating sushi if it is not prepared as per the rules of preparing the ingredients. For instance, some fish like the tuna and the bluefin, can carry a high amount of mercury. This can be really threatening and hazardous if this type of sushi is consumed in large amounts.

As per the studies conducted in January 2008, few of the New York City restaurants provide tuna sushi which has a high concentration of mercury. A weekly dosage of such sushi includes two to six pieces and it depends on the amount of tuna in the sushi and the weight of the person eating such type of sushi. If the person consumes a lot of undercooked or raw seafood, it can lead to the risk of anisakiasis.

Health hazards

Anisakiasis is a disease that can be caused by infection with the Anisakis worms. If a person eats any raw fish without it being properly cooked, he can surely face such a disease. Anisakids can pose a high risk to the person's health in two of the following ways. One way it can be through the infection with worms from eating any under cooked or under processed fish and secondly, through allergic reaction to the chemical that are left by the worms in the flesh of the fish.

Sushi preparation and its other health hazards

Sushi preparation is simple, fresh and clean. It is the 21st century eating epitome. Delicate fish, nori seaweed is rich in essential oils. The nori seaweed is loaded with minerals and sushi consumption has grown over years in its popularity in various countries. Sushi making is rather fast. It contains a cocktail of chemicals and is rich in heavy metals and pesticides. This can lead to potential lower intelligence in a person and can reduce the fertility of the person. Further, a high quantity of sushi consumption can lead to cancer. Despite their healthy image, they are laden with calories.

If a person eats a meal of salmon sushi for more than twice a year, he can surely increase his risk of cancer. The contaminants that are present inside a fish often overpower its beneficial effects. People tend to think that they are improving their health by eating sushi. But they are in fact poisoning themselves.
