The reason for Pakistan's existence is essentially a religious one.. Pakistan was colonial India when it was under British rule and it was partitioned into 3 distinct parts. Each one of these parts was made because the majority of its citizens worshiped either: Hinduism or Islam.
In India the independence movement started in earnest in the latter part of the 19th Century. It subsequently gained momentum in the first part of the twentieth-century, as a spirit of nationalism flowed through Asia and Africa.
Great leaders like Mohandas Gandhi started campaigning for independence from British rule, and as we all know, was eventually successful in gaining independence.

But this did not solve religious schisms that India had. Two essentially different religions towered above the soulful land of India. The conflict was between followers of those two faiths, and it transcended the partitioning from Colonial India into India and Pakistan. Hinduism, as one of the history's oldest religions, had many followers living in India. And Islam did as too, although its history was briefer than the Hindu.

When the country was divided into two separate countries a great mass exodus occured. Muslims went to Pakistan and so Hindus to India. These exoduses resulted in mass chaos and even mass hysteria, and were often accompanied by terrible violence. In some cases, faith-based massacres occurred behind country lines.
This division and animosity continues to this day.
