What Is An Abominal Hernia?

Abdominal hernias are protrusions of the abdominal wall through a congenital area that has been weakened. Several hernias are asymptomatic while others are strangulated or incarcerated. This means that they will cause the patient much pain and should be operated on as soon as possible.

This type of hernia will occur when there is a bulge of the inside layer of the abdominal wall. They will usually occur in the abdomen, belly button, groin, and also in a place where the previous surgery has been. Certain hernias exist at birth or can occur over a period of time after someone has received pressure from persistent coughing, heavy lifting, or straining during a bowel movement.

Abdominal hernias are a condition that is most commonly found in males instead of females. Close to 700,000 operations are performed every year. People with this condition may also experience perforation, peritonitis, and gangrene from strangulated abdominal wall hernias.

We want to shed light on the subject and teach people how to spot the symptoms and learn what can cause an abdominal hernia. It is something that we do not want many people to have to deal with.

Causes & Symptoms Of Abdominal Hernias

While it is more common for an abdominal hernia to develop at the weak spot in the wall of the abdomen and can be caused by severe coughing, pregnancy, heavy lifting, old age, past surgical procedures, obesity, or losing too much weight.

Usually someone will be able to feel the hernia developing. There will a burning sensation and tenderness and at time the patient will be able to push the hernia into place. For some people the hernia may in fact disappear without any type of medical treatment. You can try to push it back into place - but keep in mind that this does not always work and cannot always be done.
