The 'What and 'How' of Diabetes?

There are two distinct varieties of diabetes and each one requires different treatment. Diabetes is incurable; it is a disease that will stay with you for the rest of your life. It can, however, be kept under control with the correct treatment and proper personal care.

1)Type 1 diabetes - this type of diabetes is also referred to as insulin dependant diabetes; and will often commence in childhood or before the age of 20. This type of diabetes occurs when your immune system attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin; this occurs over a period of time.

The typical symptoms of this type of diabetes includes excessive urination, excessive thirst, unexplained weight loss, blurred vision, numbness of the extremities, tiredness, slow healing itchy skin sores, nausea, and stomach aches.

Sufferers of Type 1 diabetes must follow a daily insulin course to control these symptoms, failing to do this can lead to glucose fluctuation in the blood stream that in turn can lead to an emergency situation. Proper monitoring of the blood sugar levels is also imperative with this form of diabetes. This can be achieved in the comfort of your own home using a specialized, easy-to-use machine.

2)Type 2 diabetes - with this type of diabetes the body fails to correctly use insulin which is needed to take and use sugar from the blood cells, thus, causing high blood sugar.

Treating this type of diabetes requires the careful monitoring of your meals in order to prevent a raised blood sugar in your blood; if this step is not enough to control your blood sugars, then there are specific medicines available that can control this for you.

Over a period of time, untreated diabetes can cause severe medical conditions such as; kidney failure, heart attack , amputation of limbs and blindness.

Education is the key to controlling your diabetes and prevent any of the harmful conditions associated with the disease. This requires perseverance on the part of the sufferer, especially if you are taking care of a diabetic minor. Constant checking of your blood sugar levels, often 2-3 times a day, will help you take charge of the situation and allow you to lead a normal life.
