Another common symptom is where a person goes to bed and can actually fall asleep, their problem lies in their inability to maintain the sleep state. A third symptom of insomnia is returning to wakefulness many times during the night.

Inability to fall sleep

This is one of the major symptoms of insomnia. It's when a person goes to bed and just cannot fall asleep. Experts agree that it should take you no longer than 20 minutes to fall asleep. The normal course of action should be to get out of bed and do something relaxing for a few minutes. The person who is suffering from insomnia will not be able to achieve sleep this way, often tossing and turning throughout the night.


Inability to maintain the sleep state

This form of sleeplessness is where the patient has no problems and falling asleep but will find that they are wide awake after only a couple of hours and will not be able to return to sleep. Often these insomniacs may well go back to sleep but will only have unrestful sleep at this stage.

Frequently waking up

Much of the time, a person who is waking up frequently during the night will need to go to the toilet or some other such condition. There are psychological conditions that could be causing the person to be wakeful.  Or it may be that there is loud snoring or sleep apnea.


Waking up feeling unrefreshed

This is a symptom when the person wakes up in the morning and feels as if they have had no sleep. This type of insomnia can leave a person feeling tired and completely drained throughout the day.

Problems with symptoms of insomnia

If you have problems sleeping is going to affect all of your life. Insomniacs are generally more irritable, they have problems with concentration and with remembering things. It can also be the cause of work-related accidents and falling asleep at the wheel of your car. It causes absenteeism from work and decreases productivity.

Visit you doctor

There are many people who suffer from symptoms of insomnia and you should not suffer this alone. You should make a visit to your local doctor who either is able to prescribe you a course of treatment or will be able to refer you to a sleep specialist.
