Nearsightedness or myopia is a condition in which near objects are seen clearly, whereas distant objects are blurred. It affects about 20% to 30% of the population and is usually detected by routine eye examination. The degree of nearsightedness determines the person focusing ability. People with severe nearsightedness can only see clearly the objects just a few inches away, while those with mild nearsightedness may clearly see objects several yards away. Nearsightedness may develop slowly or rapidly, often worsening during childhood and adolescence. Nearsightedness may also run in the family.

What is the cause of Nearsightedness? In the perfectly shaped eye, each of the focusing elements (cornea and retina) has a perfectly smooth curvature which is like the surface of a rubber ball. In nearsightedness a person's eyeball is not properly shaped (either eyeball is too long or the front of the eye is curved abnormally) to focus when light passes through it. Instead of being focused precisely on your retina, light is focused in front of your retina, resulting in a blurry appearance for distant object.

Symptoms: The first sign that a person is nearsighted usually occurs in childhood between the ages of 8 and 12. It is often a teacher who notices that a student is having trouble seeing the blackboard. The teacher may notice the student squinting, squinting can help to focus on distant objects for nearsighted people.

Common Symptoms: Distant object appear blurry, squinting to see clearlyandheadache cause by eyestrain

Treatments: Fortunately, nearsightedness is usually corrected by eyeglasses or contact lenses with concave lenses that bring the lines of light into focus to retina.

  • Corrective lenses: Prescription eyeglasses change how the light passing through the eye is focused. Contact lenses can also help nearsightedness. People may need to change their eyeglasses as they grow older, this is because as the body grows, the shape of the eyeball changes too. By the time people reach their twenties, this condition usually stabilizes and does not get worse.
  • Surgery: People with mild or moderate nearsightedness may benefit from refractive surgery. A surgeon cuts small incisions in the surface of the eye, known as the cornea, to flatten it. This allows the image to be focused on the retina.
  • Laser treatment. Another type of surgery involves a laser that changes the shape of the cornea to achieve the same result. Many people who have this treatment no longer need glasses at all.

Recommended Natural Remedy:

  • Malunggay leaves - this is a miracle plant which can do wonder with most eye problems.
  • Apple cider vinegar - contain loads of vitamin and mineral which can prevent headache due to eyestrain.
