TDY HOUSING or MILITARY HOUSING
If you are a service member,
who just got married you may have a few questions about housing for
your family. As a single service member you probably lived in the dormitories,
or barracks, you are used to having room mates, and to sharing a kitchen
and living room with other members of the military. Getting married
for anyone means big changes, but for you and your new spouse, it may
mean other things like the addition of children, and it automatically
signs you up as a service member with dependents. This is actually
a great thing. You may have gotten used to having inspections from your
superior officer, then again, that may be something you never want to
get used to. The word is out, lucky you- most government supplied military
housing is normally free of inspections, unless your neighbors complain
for reasons of sanitary nature, or if your housing appears to be unsafe.
You and your new family can live as you would like without having someone
telling you what your house should look like.
The outside of your house is
a completely different ball game. All of there services are fairly strict
when it comes to how they would like the outside of your house and yard
to look. High standards for exterior maintenance is expected of you.
Most on-base housing will be inspected by drive by inspectors who check
to see that you are mowing your lawn and taking care of your yard. If
you fail to do the chores they would like you to, they will write you
tickets or discrepancies, and if you keep it up and receive too many
you will be asked to move off base. In the states, unless you have a
rather large family, most on base family housing units are duplexes
or twin homes. At some bases there are fenced in back yards, and at
others there are not. You can get a fence put up at your own expense
and if the next resident doesn't want it, you will have to remove it
again at your own expense.
Moving out of your beloved
on-base housing will be a lot harder than moving in. This is when the
inspections do take place and when they say they want it spotless, they
mean spotless. It is really hard to get the job done yourself, most
people will hire professionals to do the job for them. Don't be afraid
to live there because of fear of moving out, enjoy the benefits of living
surrounded by your fellow service members. Do be aware, some bases are
filled up to the brim, occasionally this means that you will be on a
waiting list, sometimes up to a year. In this case, looking into off-base
housing is a great option that most members with dependents are offered.
