THE GATEWAY GEYSER: A ST. LOUIS SECRET
70One day I was riding home thru downtown St. Louis and something awesome caught my attention out of the corner of my eye. I appeared to be a geyser. Yeah like the one Yellowstone National Park. But on a more massive scale. This thing was huge. It was shooting water up as high as the Gateway Arch.
I call a friend of mine when I got home and told him what I had seen and he thought I was crazy and he said to call him back when I was back to normal. I called another friend and asked if he knew about the geyser on the riverfront and he too was amused. And then it struck me that not many people knew this thing existed. I was only by chance that I saw it and i was only for a few seconds as I passed by it on the highway. This was St. Louis' big secret. My mother was the only one of many people who I told about it that actually knew about it though she had not seen it yet. My mother is one of those people who are alway up on current events far and near so I was not surprised that she knew about it.
Over the next few weeks I had only see the geyser two more times. Its sight is indeed a rare ocassion and I wanted to know more about it. Well it shoots up about 630-640 feet into the air and it is roughly the height of the Gateway Arch. It is called the Gateway Geyser and it was created by a St. Louis based company in 1995 called Hydro Dramatics. It is a sight to see when you can see it. There are 4 smaller geyser around it that represent the 4 rivers that run thru Missouri and Illinois. The Geyser is part of a long awaited project that was supposed to link the riverfronts of downtown St. Louis and East St. Louis. An observation deck was recently constructed near the geyser to give amazing views of the geyser, the arch, and the skyline.
If you plan to visit St. louis, especially around Independence Day where St. louis hosts the largest celebration in the contry every year, you should plan to visit these attractions and see this amazing sight for yourself.
