Where have all the honey bees gone and why?

Why are the honey bees disappearing overnight?

The honey bee is going to work out in the fields and never returning to the hive! Some thing is killing them and if we care about this planet at all, we should start to work out what is happening!

In North America we find great losses of colony collapse disorder commonly known as CCD and the bee colonies are falling dramatically and it does not seem to be any one type of disease that is doing it. One person remarked that he had some hobby hives in his back yard and he had some obnoxious weeds next to the hive. He then sprayed them with a weed killer suggested from his local hardware store and came back the following morning to find hardly any bees left. Could that be the cause then, that crop dusters dusting for dandelions could be killing the bees before they have a chance to get home? It’s worth a thought. Something is happening and according to SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN its happening all over the world. But not in Australia! The Australian bee is a different variety to our U.S. neighbor and at this stage is not affected by CCD. If they are and you know about it, now is the time to have your say.

Another problem that could be causing problems is ISRAELI ACUTE PARALYSIS VIRUS which produces the same symptoms as CCD and could cause the death of the insect. Although worker bees in colony collapse disorder vanish, bees infected with IAPV die close to the hive, after developing shivering wings and paralysis. For some reason, the Australian bees seem to be resistant to IAPV and do not come down with symptoms. Another probable cause is the transference of hives by truck into different fields so they pollinate larger areas.

Well! It seems like we are doing a lot of work identifying the problem. Maybe the bees are sick and tired of their hives being robbed and are starting to get annoyed like the cartoon below, who knows, one thing for sure , it needs to be fixed. I visited Scientific American Magazines website recently and it showed a beautiful breakfast on a table, complete with everything, and it asks you to roll your mouse over the photo to show you what it would be like without bees and it was mind boggling. Why don't you have a look? Regards Brian

THE AMAZING HONEY BEE

THE AMAZING HONEY BEE

THE AMAZING HONEY BEE

What a unique creature! Not a lot of people know about the way the humble bee works and the amazing things that happen in its lifetime.  I am writing this hub as information and an update for everybody to understand why the bees go to extraordinary lengths to gather honey for their hive.

While investigating the bumble bee, I found out that they need around 35 pounds of honey in their hive to last out the winter. All workers are female that are not sexually developed. The drones are the male bees and as most people know, they just hang around the hive drinking honey bitter until winter. Then they are expelled out of the hive and it goes into shutdown mode leaving the queen and her loyal subjects to get on with cleaning the hive and making sure that the queen is kept alive by keeping her warm and safe. If the queen dies, the female bees elect another female worker from the hive and they feed her Royal Jelly to increase her laying powers.

Eventually she will lay between 1000 and 2500 eggs a day completely updating the hive.

I also found out that at each entrance to the hive, there are guard bees and as the workers come into the hive, they give off a unique scent that is only unique to them personally so identifying all the bees of that hive.

Their makeup consists of a head, a thorax, and a abdomen, five eyes, two pair of wings, feelers, a sting to protect themselves, three pair of jointed legs and on its back legs it has little pouches to carry the pollen back to the hive. They fly at around 10 miles an hour and they work in conjunction with the other bees of the hive to bring in the honey. When they find a lot of flowers that need visiting they go into dance mode showing other members of the hive that there are a lot of flowers in a certain area and they give off directions by their unique dance.
