The temporomandibular joint syndrome or TMJ joint disorder is a condition wherein the joints comprising this are inflamed. Because of this inflammation, there is a distinctive pain felt across the jaw and other parts connected to it. To know more about this condition, we have provided you with a short description of what TMJ is really all about.

It is usually caused by cartilage deterioration due to aging or dislocation of the TMJ. Another cause of this annoying condition is the frequent grinding and clenching of the teeth. Trauma is another factor leading to TMJ. If the bite of the upper and lower teeth is misaligned, it might be traumatizing for the jaw joints involved while chewing. Other conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, which cause joint inflammation, are also reasons why people get TMJ.

To identify that you are experiencing this syndrome, take note of the different TMJ symptoms listed below and try to compare if what you are experiencing come close to the description provided.

TMJ Symptoms

  • Out of all the symptoms possible to encounter, jaw joint pain is the most common. As they are chewing, biting or yawning, there is either a dull yet constant or an intermittent sharp pain. Another thing that comes with the pain is a clicking or popping sound as they move their mouths.
  • Some people experience ear pain since the TMJs are placed near the ears. Perhaps they think this is so because when jaw joint pain occurs, since the ears are located near these affected joints, it may appear like the pain is coming from them.
  • Manageable to terrible headaches could also be experienced. Sudden or mismanaged movement of the jaw joint could put a strain to the muscles or ligaments which are connected to the head. This could also touch some nerves which would explain the headaches being experienced. Usually, those who feel TMJ symptoms with headaches also experience neck pain.
  • If the person constantly grinds his or her teeth, then they could expect that the surfaces of their teeth will be damaged.
  • Those who are experiencing TMJ jaw joint pain might have swollen faces because of the inflammation of the joints or muscles affected.

These are only a few of the symptoms one could experience with the TMJ joint disorder. By the looks of these TMJ symptoms, it would be very irritating to have them and these would really prevent you from going on with your daily activities. So before you start experiencing these symptoms, put a halt to habits which contribute to having TMJ and find more ways to prevent this condition.
