The temporomandibular joint disorder, also known as TMJ syndrome, is a painful medical condition which no one would want to experience. The symptoms one undergoes when TMJ strikes are really irritating. Pain is created once the cartilage of the lower jaw is displaced. When this happens, pressure is created in the area and some sensory nerves are stretched. Other experiences would include pain in the jaw area, stiffening of the jaw and sometimes jaw locking. Other alarming symptoms would include popping or grating noises while chewing or biting your food.

You can actually prevent having these symptoms by avoiding activities or habits which could contribute to acquiring this condition. These include activities which require opening the mouth widely such as yawning or laughing out loud. Another habit which you should avoid is chewing gum frequently. Doing this often could abuse your jaw joints and result to TMJ syndrome.

This syndrome could also be caused by uneven teeth. When teeth are not even, the lower jaw may be displaced, putting a strain on the jaw muscles. Aging also contributes greatly to the occurrence of TMJ. As we grow old, the teeth would degenerate. As a result, our bite is interfered and result to the TMJ syndrome.

Treatment for TMJ syndrome is not actually that difficult. These symptoms don’t last really long which is why the only thing we have to worry about is how to relieve the pain that it causes. Some pain management interventions include applying hot and cold packs and physical therapy on the affected area. A change in lifestyle would also help greatly. Try to adapt a soft diet so that you don’t have to chew or bite much when eating. It would also help if you slice your food into little pieces so that you don’t have to open your mouth really wide to take in food. When yawning, try to support your mouth by with your hands while opening it. Do this for other activities which call for opening the mouth a little bit wider. If the misalignment of your teeth is what’s causing your TMJ syndrome, see a dentist for professional help on how to make your bite even and avoid straining your jaw muscles.

TMJ syndrome is easier to manage if you do the prescribed interventions religiously. You don’t have to suffer the pain TMJ causes. Try to consult a physician which specializes in diagnosing TMJ so that you will get the right treatment and be able to manage pain easily and faster.
