Hello everyone and welcome to my Hub!
So, you want to know about truck driving...well, where do I begin?
Let me just start off by telling you a little bit about myself. I have been driving a truck for a living for the past 7 years, going to be 8 soon. I pull a reefer unit which is what we call a refrigerated trailer that is used to haul anything that needs to be kept at a certain temperature or within a certaing temperature range but it can also be used as a dry van as well if we just turn the unit off. This particular area of the industry is where I have all of my experience so to anyone looking for detailed information on flatbed, tankers, oversize, dump trucks, roll offs, etc. sorry. Even though, I can provide information on any one of those areas but it would just be general knowledge and not very experienced or what they call first hand experience.
While pulling reefer units I have hauled just about any kind of food product that you can think of and delivered it to just about any supermarket that you have ever shopped in. I've also hauled HazMat which is short for Hazardous Materials and various other dry goods.
I've driven through just about any kind of weather that you can imagine, rain, sleet, snow, hail, black ice, very high MPH winds, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. But the weather I hate the most that is pretty common during the winter is snow, actually snow is not that bad, it's really the black ice that is the real killer. Black ice has a way of making your gonads shrivel up and turn the bravest of men into scared little boys, lol. I would rather drive a thousand miles in rain, snow, or just about any other weather than have to drive one mile on black ice.
I got started in truck driving for all of the wrong reasons. Mainly, I didn't study and go to college and ended up working B.S. jobs like waiting tables, telemarketing, fast food, and cooking in restaurants, jobs that weren't cutting it for me and that I hated and knew weren't going to get me anywhere any time soon. I finally said to myself, that's it I can't take it and decided that I had to do something to make more money and so one day I saw a commercial for a truck driving school and Bam! I knew that was the answer, or at least I thought I did.
I'm not going to go into any of what I like to call "My trucking stories" in this Hub, I'll save those for future Hubs so be on the lookout for those, some are pretty damn funny, some are dangerous, some you can just learn from. So to make a long story short, I did end up going to that school and getting my CDL and have been driving ever since. I am currently conducting an experiment and will reveal the results at a later date, but again, I won't get into that right now.
So what I wanted this Hub to be about was basically just introducing myself and sharing with you what my future Hubs will be about and that is my stories, but also if any of you are thinking about driving a truck for a living and have questions I would be more than happy to answer them. I will be starting up a blog just for this very same reason, to answer your questions. When that gets done I'll be back to edit this hub and link it to my Blog. In the mean time, feel free to leave any questions in the comments section here.
Besides my stories about truck driving I will be adding Hubs on truck driving in general so that you can get a better idea of what it is really like. It's not going to be a schmooze fest about how great it is or how much money you can make or the sites you'll see. It's going to be real life information, you'll get the good and the bad because I'm not a recruiter trying to get you to come work for my company or go to my school or sell you anything so you know it will be just the straight facts with me, guaranteed!
Yeah, I know this Hub pretty much didn't answer any of your truck driving questions, but I felt that I had to lay down some groundwork and now that it's out of the way we can get to the fun stuff in future Hubs. So I'll see you all soon!

Hi,
I am thinking about becoming a trucker. I am 25 years old, graduated from college with a teaching degree, but realized I hate it. I want to give trucking a shot. I found a company (Steven's Transport) that is willing to help pay for training, but will pay for it monthly once the training ends. I wanted to get your take on if you think trucking could be a job for me. I have no experience in it. I do like to drive. I am single and am on my own. I do appreciate your blog and hope to hear soon! Thanks!
Good post. I too am going into the trucking business and finding out the recruiters are full of BS. I found prices ranging from $6900 to $2500 for truck driving school. Since I have had some experience with driving heavy trucks(concrete mixer) all I want is the license and endorsements. I am paying cash for my training so I won't have to be beholden to any company. I'm still looking for a good company to start with. Any thoughts?
I'll be emailing you soon!
Hi, I am writing me senior thesis on food transportation, and specifically on the transportation of food. Do you know where I can find information on the differences in equipment for non-refrigerated, refrigerated, and frozen food required? Is there government regulation for temperatures? What is the change in fuel efficiency? Basically I need a 'crash' course in semi-truck equipment, terms, etc. Could you give me a push in the right direction? Thanks, Juli

Bob, sorry for the late response, but sorry, can't really think of any companies that will hire somebody without experience that are any good, sad but true. Most companies out there are swindlers. Just be careful and make sure to do your homework before you commit to anything, that's the best advice I can give you. You seem to like bikes, why don't you stick to selling them, seems like ti would be more enjoyable than driving a truck?
