Mariscos Guillen / La Playita

Review #2

Taco Fanatic Master Hub

Ok, review number two is a taco stand on Lincoln Ave in Santa Monica / LA that specializes in seafood, especially cocteles.  A friend of mine lives down there, frequents this place a lot and introduced me to it.  I am going to try to get a more complete review from him, but if you're in the area and you like seafood you may want to check it out.

Location:  3306 Lincoln (between Marine and Rose), Santa Monica, California.

Last visit:  By me, October 2001.  By my friend Kevin, probably last week (June 2006)

This place is also called La Playita.  It always seems to have a line, which is what you want in a place that specializes in seafood.  Long line equals turnover, which suggests relative freshness of ingredients, etc.  I've never gotten sick after eating here, but I've only eaten here a couple of times.  If memory serves, they proudly display an "A" or "B" grade from the LA restaurant inspectors.

Anyway, here the things to have are the seafood cocteles (that's "cocktails" in Mexican, gringo).  They are packed full of shrimp, oysters, scallops, octopus etc.  Super fresh shellfish and mollusks in a moderately spicy red sauce.  Squeeze in some lime and add a few shakes of salsa picate and go to town.  I highly recommend this stand if you're in the area.  They also have burritos and tacos, the tacos are probably good, what can I say.   Embarrassed to admit I've not yet tried them.
