Grand Carrera, Racing Inspired

An elite extension of the Carrera, Tag Heuer's Grand Carrera receives and adrenaline shot that results in a very robust look and additional functionality. Most Grand Carrera watches are officially certified chronometers, which means two weeks on intense testing, from which the watches emerge as extra strong and damage proof. Grand Carrera employ rare materials such as titanium, and incorporate apertures reminiscent of racing car panels. Indeed, more than anything, it's a racing car inspired collection.

Design

Grand Carrera is Tag Heuer's only line that employs gold for the case of some models. These are the dressier versions; the more sport oriented ones come in titanium or stainless steel. The main design approach can be categorized as “larger than life” -- the watches try to accommodate as much information as they can, without compromising neither style nor function.

Grand Carrera appears to be a true high-end luxury collection. The apertures for the rotating disks that indicate the chronograph function substitute the regular subdials, offering a much more stylish way of displaying and reading minutes and seconds. Depending on the metal and the complimenting color (usually black for titanium, brown or white for pink gold, and white or black for stainless steel), each watch aims to project either youthful readiness, seasoned elegance, or refined maturity.

Functionality

Grand Carrera is notable for its use of an advanced chronograph function that displays results from within the watch rather than on a pair of outward subdials. The data appears via two apertures, shaped as symmetrically truncated semicircles. As a result, the watch appears more stylized, and precious – though the latter quality might not be to everyone's taste. Other complications include date, grand date, and a GMT indicator. Tag Heuer experiment with the position of the windows, placing them at either three, six, nine, or twelve o'clock.

Grand Carrera Caliper offers a unique solution to displaying precise mechanical chronograph data: a redesigned set of inner subdials, and an additional crown at ten o'clock.
