An engagement ring and a wedding ring should appear that they were made to be worn together. Because of this, it is important to know what engagement ring design will best suit your wedding ring. Engagement ring designs that have a straight edged band can have a straight edged wedding ring worn next to it. On the other hand, Engagement rings that do not have a straight band or those that have gemstone settings that sit low will prevent a straight wedding ring design from sitting neatly and evenly next to the engagement ring. So, to keep with the concept that the wedding ring and engagement ring should be made to look like they belong together, it's best to wear a curved or fitted wedding ring when possible so that the wedding ring will sit neatly and evenly with the engagement ring.

After choosing the right design that compliments your engagement and wedding ring, it is important to know how to care for your precious symbol of love. An important factor in caring for your engagement ring is its cleaning. Cleaning should not be taken for granted; you must clean your engagement ring properly to ensure the beauty and brilliance of your ring for many years to come. Many people have the wrong idea that keeping their engagement rings on while washing hands is an acceptable way to clean it. On the contrary, the soaps and other cleaners used on your hands can cloud and dull your ring. Rings should actually be cleaned regularly to keep its sparkle.

It is very easy to clean a diamond engagement ring; the best way is by mixing water and mild liquid detergent. You may use a soft bristled brush, even a used toothbrush will do. It must be a brush that can loosen dirt. A soft, lint-free cloth should be used for drying. There are also many store-bought jewelry solutions available for sale at jewelers. These may also be used for soaking diamond rings as well as solutions of ammonia and ethyl alcohol. Ammonia (in a mild solution with three parts water) is particularly good for brightening yellow gold, but should never be used with fracture-filled diamonds as it may cause the diamonds to become cloudy or discolored.

Engagement rings can also be professionally cleaned if they become overly dirty. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are the most popular choices among jewelers. As a last resort to clean an extremely dirty ring, professional jewelry cleaners can also boil diamond rings in sulfuric acid. Please do not forget to advise your professional jewelry cleaner should your engagement ring have any serious flaws, like fractures or cracks, so as to avoid cleaning techniques that can worsen the condition of your diamond. Also, some engagement rings will come with different types of stones. Each stone may require a very different cleaning method. You must know some information on each stone on your engagement ring especially they’re cleaning. If it contains different types of stones, you must also make sure that that whichever cleaning method you choose is appropriate for all of them to prevent damage.

You should also be concerned with protecting your engagement ring from damage and theft. These two factors though unpleasant to think about, should be your first priorities when storing your precious ring. A jewelry box is a good place to store it! The jewelry box though must be lined with a soft material. A diamond engagement ring in particular should be wrapped in soft material and put in a cushioned jewelry bag if you are going to keep it for a long time. It’s best to keep valuables that you reserve for very special occasions in a safe at home or in safety deposit box in a bank. Never keep diamond jewelry with other pieces of jewelry to avoid nicks or scratches on your prized diamond pieces. Gold or platinum settings on the engagement ring can likewise be damaged by other stone on other jewelry pieces.
