Intro to Fruit Smoothies

Store bought fruit smoothies are filled with sugar. Some don't even use real fruit. To make the healthiest and tastiest fruit smoothies, buy fresh fruit, organic, if possible. Find a blender that crushes ice well. For most blenders, crushed ice works better than ice from trays. Have low-fat yogurt, 100 percent juice and milk on hand. Aside from the food, blender and ice, have a cutting board and knife available.

Strawberry Banana Bash

Ingredients

3 cups of ice
1 whole banana
6 strawberries
1 cup of orange juice
1 tbls sugar
*add ½ cup more of ice for a thicker drink. Less ice for runnier

Cut up the banana and strawberries. Put in the blender. Add the orange juice. Sugar is optional. It brings out the flavor but if you want less sugar, avoid it. Add the ice last. Blend until all the ice chunks are gone. Serve immediately.

Strawberry Peach

3 cups of ice
1 whole peach, no pit
6 strawberries
1 cup of orange juice
1 tbls sugar
*add ½ cup more of ice for a thicker drink. Less ice for runnier

Cut up the peach and strawberries and toss in the blender. The peel can stay on the peach. Add the juice and sugar. Sugar will bring out the flavor. Add ice. Crushed ice works best. Blend until all the chunks are gone. There will be a slight orange tint to the smoothie.

I really enjoyed this recipe. I made it thicker and ate it like sorbet, it was really good!

I like how you substitute sugar with real juices. What a great idea. I actually used to work in an organic foods store at the juice bar, working with dozens of concoctions. Great start so far!
