84After writing over two dozen hubs on tattoo ideas that showcased pictures as the majority of the content, I started noticing that a large portion of the comments were from people asking for ideas on what to say, not so much on how to say it. Like Lindsay, for example, who commented on the hub Tattoo Ideas: Words & Phrases and said: "I want some sort of latin script with a phrase having to do with karma." Or Jesso, who said: "I have a colourful fish on my left lower back, but next I want a script.. .. just what I don't know... something positive to remind me every day is mine, I am in control of my destiny."
The tricky thing about quote tattoos is that nine times out of ten they can't be too long. Unless you have a huge expanse of skin that you plan on dedicating to the tat, like a forearm or your entire back, you're going to need to pick a quote that's short enough to fit in a small area. A few years ago my girlfriend wanted to get something I had written tattooed on her in my handwriting. The quote she wanted was twenty-one words long, and she wanted it somewhere on her inner forearms. As she is already fairly heavily tattooed, there was no criteria such as having to get it on a place that could be easily hidden if need be. She's lucky. She ended up getting it running lengthwise down her arm next to the word GIRL that was already there. Most people don't have the same flexibility as her. Maybe your job is too professional for tattoos and piercings, or you don't want your mother to see it. If that's the case, then a quote tattoo can be challenging to find space for. And if you think you're going to fit an entire poem (unless it's a haiku) on your wrist by shrinking down the letters to a size 5 font, you're mistaken. Good tattoo artists will only let you make the lettering so small, because they know that tattoos blend, fade and bleed over time. The smaller the font, the better the chance that you'll be left with a meaningless blob ten years down the road.
So believe it or not, I went back through all 2,000+ comments and tried to identify the most common themes people requested when asking for help with quote ideas. In addition to being a voracious reader, I've been compiling quotes in notebooks and journals since I was thirteen. I would like for this hub to turn into a series of hubs broken down by category. So please, if you have any ideas or would like to share a favorite quote of yours, feel free to comment! The examples I've chosen for this particular hub may not resonate with everyone. You might read it and get nothing out of it. But my hope is that something will resonate with someone, somewhere, and the words written here will inspire you to take a step you may not have taken otherwise.

I think that one is really good for a couple going through a deployment. He's going to go through the hardship of war and being away from you, friends and family. You're going to go through the pain of worrying and waiting for your partner. It's not easy but it will pass and you guys will be together again. trust me, once he's back in your arms it will feel like he never left them.

I just recieved my second round of radiation therapy for Thyroid cancer. I'm thinking of having a butterfly (symbol of the thyroid for it's shape) flying away from a quote I use quite abit - "Accept what is" - on my inner arm wrist. im getting a quote on my lower back, im very conservative and this will be my first and only tat. my parents wont know either. its just for me, i always wanted the "la bella vita"- the beautiful life. written their but im sick of the phrase now. then i thought live love laugh would be nice, but i think it would look weird. i know i want something small. i want it to be about life and happiness. i was thinking of just getting "believe" written their with maybe a peace sign and a cross on each side. im just not sure. because i really want it to mean something. i love the idea of the dove, but my bestfriend has it and it would remind me of her which i dont want, and angel wings are very cool but i havnt been able to find any designs of them i liked on the lower back.

I was also the victim of rape, years ago, and just recently dealt with it. I want a tattoo that marks this new stage of my life. I love the yiddish quote "God gave burdens, also shoulders." I'm thinking of getting it in Hebrew. Also, not neccessarily for a tat, but the words of Maya Angelou's poem "I rise" are very expressive of the courage many women and men must develop through the recovery period, and may be of interest to you. my best friend told me that she saw a quote a few months back and since then I've done nothing but figure out how to design the tattoo for it. Here's the problem: she told me the quote incorrectly and now that i've looked up the actual quote, i'm not as crazy about it... would it be weird to have a quote that isn't really a quote???

im looking to get a tattoo and want it to mean the world to me. my father has struggled with alcoholism my entire life. it has effected me greatly, in the obvious negative ways but also in ways i have come to see as positive. i am the person i am because of my sick father and personally i love who i am growing to be. i am very independant as a result of my experiences as well as determined and humorous. i am looking for a very short quote (only a few words) to symbolize all i have overcome. i am the strongest person i know because of it, except for my mom of course who i am wishing will write the quote i choose to symbolize my respect and love for my mom, my hero, through the roughest time in our lives. if you have any good and short quotes about strength or other ideas i would be very grateful. thank you!

I got my first tattoo back in july its the japanese symbol for love with my parents names over it, my mom is japanese, and i'm thinking about getting another tattoo, it says "true victory is victory over oneself" it would also be in japanese. what do you guys think?
