Tattoos in Translation
Now that we have established that you are a tatoo lover (big time) then there is a likelihood you will, at some point, consider having a tattoo design.
Having a tattoo is always a commitment…especially if the words to be tattooed onto a part of your body are not in your mother-tongue.
Tattoos are with you forever, and those which have been translated require special considerations.

Hot Tattoo Designs
- In a 2002 survey, eight out of the top ten voted ‘most beautiful women in the world’ were bearers of tatoos. A number of these tattoos are translations. In actual fact many of the UK celebrities have translation tattoos...for the reason that publications airbrush them out of the picture before publication
- The 2006 the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology reported
that about one of four females between 18 and 50 years of age have tattoos.
- Tattoos and tattoo translations are, to put it simply, hot business. Evidence of this is statistics by Lycos which states that the ‘Tattoo’ search query has never been recorded falling lower than the Top 50 search phrases.
- Even though ‘Tattoo’ is an incredibly popular search, it is often companioned by the word ‘translation’. Practically every language has been searched for along with the term ‘Tattoo’
- Highly sought tattoo translations are translations into the following languages: Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese,Swahili, Hindi and Arabic
- Even though a US survey indicated that more than 80% of respondents
did not repent having a tattoo done, the large number of ‘humorous’
sites devoted to sharing stories of tattoo translation tragedies is getting ever bigger.
- Dr James Morel of CA, recently said that patients were
coming to him in great numbers to have tattoos got rid of which were
mistranslations. It seems that many of these patients pick a tattoo in
a tattoo shop and simply trust the fact that it is a tattoo is
translated properly. Few of these persons take the time to aquire the translation ahead of time by a professional translator.
His Tattoo said 'I am Ugly' in Chinese
1. Request the opinions of several native Chinese persons prior to getting the tattoo done.
2. Remember that in the Chinese dialect there are plenty of ways of expressing the same thing.
If you inquire about the Chinese words you wish to have put on your skin as a tatoo, ask the chinese person not just what individual 'ideograms' (letters) signify, but also if together they make sense as a sentence.
And do not just ask one person. Go to your local Chinatown, and ask several. That way you will not be disappointed by your Chinese language tattoo.
3. Chinese is a complex language with multiple layers of meaning which change with context, so use several different sentences to express what you want to say, not just one. That way all the sentences together will tip-off your translator as to what you are getting at.
For example, instead of saying your wish your Chinese letters to say "Strong", it might be better to say "Strong like the winds and the oceans". In this way your Chinese interpreter will guess just what you are suggesting.
4. Having your own name tattooed in Chinese on your skin?
There are a variety of dialects in Chinese and the truth is that your name will sound very different in each one. But don't worry, as this won't be a big deal. Just make certain you get the one which is what you want-- it's your tattoo and it's your body.
If you find your name can't really be translated into Chinese why not find a Chinese person (they are all very friendly and love to help when they can, in my experience) to help choose one which suites your personality - this can be tons of fun and is a great way to 'reinvent' yourself as well as make a new friend.

Tribal Tattoos
Tribal tattoos are the types of tattoos of abstract conception that look like a particular animal or object and is drawn into the skin to illustrate said object as either menacing or awe inspiring. Tribal tattoos typically refer to black tattoos of intricate designs
Tribal tattoos can look like random swirls or spirals in
the body stellar symbols or
religious iconography which derives it's specific meaning from the tribe from which it came, which can include Celtic and Sanskrit designs, as well as others.
Originating with the different indigenous tribes from different countries, tribal tattoos are largely from the natives of America, Europe and Australia. The design for the tribal tatoo have various significations which depend upon the spiritual beliefs of individual tribes.
Some of the most popular tribal tattoos are: Native American,
Polynesian, Hawaiian and Maori.
Native American tribal tattoos were given during different rites of passage and sacred blessings. Presented to warriors of the tribe that would protect them or during a hunt or in preparation for war. Some of the tattoo designs also provide the wearer a particular status symbol as a member of the tribe. The Mayans and the Aztecs tribal tattoos are examples of this category.
History
The actual origin of tattooing goes as far back as the late Stone Age. Some historical examples of tattoos are individuals who had acupuncture points indicated on their bodies.
Traditionally, in areas of
Asia, tattoos were believed to have magical qualities; they were employed as
a permanent talisman to fight evil spirits and to bring good luck to the wearer.
Inuit tribes used tattoos to fend off evil spirits and to heal disease and sickness.
The Wichita tribe tattooed heavy, black circles around the eyes of the men for decorative purposes .
In Polynesia, tribal tattoos consisting of complex geometric figures would be drawn on the skin in a ritualistic ceremony.
In New Zealand, the Maori used facial tattoos to indicate social status.
In Hawaii, tribal tattoos were often used to show mourning for a lost tribe member.
A number of cultures such as ancient Rome used tattoos as ownership markings for slaves and to identify criminals.
Tattoos in Borneo are used to mark a young man's passageway into adulthood when he achieves his first kill hunting prey alone.
Japan has flush history of body art, and is one rare culture where tattoos were commonly drawn on women. In ancient Japanese cultures, females tattooed themselves to look like goddesses and to indicate marital availability (or lack thereof).
Methods
Methods for ancient, historical tattooing involved cutting designs into the dermis and rubbing pigment into the cut. A number of instruments would be used for drawing the design; the use of stone chisels or carved animal bone, being examples.
Other methods employed hand-pricking the skin with sharp sticks, or sharpened animal bones. The pigment used was created from ashes, dye from plants, ground-up minerals or bones.
Keep in Mind
Whichever tattoo design you pick, just keep in mind that translation is not a simple copy and paste procedure, but involves some research on your part before hand.
After all, you will have the tattoo forever, so you might want to make certain that it really 'says' what you want it to say to anyone who may see it.
A Word on Tattoo Removal
Tattoos can be removed by a breakdown of the ink by using an intensely focused light. Laser tattoo removal is presently the most used form of removal today. The laser process works extremely well on dark tattoos for people with light colored skin. However , when tattoo inks are matching skin pigmentation, permanent light spots can develop. This is especially true when the tattooed person has dark skin. Laser removal is considered to be much more painful thanthe original tattoo, and often requires many sessions of hundreds of dollars. It is not unusual for laser removal to also leave a slight scar. Generally speaking this is not a procedure to be taken lightly.
Again -- tattoo extraction is expensive and far from perfect. So make sure you get your translation right BEFORE the tattoo is applied.
