Greek tattoo meaning "wisdom"
Greek tattoo meaning "wisdom"

Greek is one of the oldest languages in the world; it has been spoken in Europe since the year 2000 BC. Several different forms of Greek have been spoken since then, including classical, Hellenistic (spoken during the days of Alexander the Great), medieval (used by the Byzantine Empire in the 15th century) and modern Greek. Dhimotiki is presently the official language of Greece since 1976. It is spoken by approximately 15-25 million people worldwide.

Despite the saying "it's all Greek to me", meaning that an expression is nonsencial, tattoos done in the Greek language are not an unusual occurrence on the BMEzine website where I find most of my pictures. Unlike Hebrew and Arabic, which use highly specific character sets, Latin, which has long been extinct, and Irish Gaelic, which has numerous dialects, Greek can be a fairly easy language to translate. Greek lettering tattoos can be an expression of pride for one's nationality and a dedication to one's heritage. Many English words have a Greek equivalent, and can easily be found using any number of English to Greek translators available on the web or at your local bookstore. This online dictionary will translate the word of your choice into either modern or Ancient Greek and will show you the word using letters from both the English and Greek alphabets.

As with any tattoo that is done in a foreign language not your own, make sure you do your homework. Double check your translation with several sources. A native speaker is your best bet, someone who speaks Greek as their first language, English as their second, or vice versa. If a native speaker is not available to you, your next best bet is a scholar who has studied the language extensively. Last but not least, there are several online translators who offer their services for free. Although they can be very useful, keep in mind that it is important to ensure your translation is correct by either using several different online translators or confirming it's accuracy with native speakers on an Greek forum or message board.

I have been looking into greek proverbs to potentially have tattooed on my arm, but I need to have them translated. They are:

"One minute of patience, ten years of peace"

"If it were not for hope, the heart would break"

"The tongue has no bones, yet it breaks bones"

If you have any information about any (or all) of these proverbs, including their Greek translations or origin, please post it. Thanks!

Aella  says:

At the risk of starting an all out brawl, learn to do some research. It's not hard to translate these things once you learn something.

Also, perhaps think carefully about why you want it in Greek (and is that Clssical or Modern?), is it because it's important to you, or because you think it's cool?

Just a thought.

i want the word 'wisdom' tattooed in greek, but i dont know the difference in the following three translations: σοφ?α, σ?νεση, φρ?νηση if anyone knows the difference... please let me know...and which one is the simple literal translation?

koukla  says:

ok I found it in latin. but does anyone know greek translation? guess i could go to a library aella but its much betta to get it from a real-life greek

KostasIII  says:

well well

KRISTEN

Σοφ?α = wisdom (sofia)

Συνεση = I make wise, prudence, wisdom (sinesi)

Φρονηση = good sence, be good, wisdom (fronisi)

All of them means wisdom but not exactly

They have small deferences that cann't be translated

The exact translation for wisdom is "σοφια" or in capital "ΣΟΦΙΑ"

KOUKLA

I can't understand what you want to translate. If you mean the " what nourishes me also kills me" the word nourishes does not exist. Please explain me what you want so as to translate it for you.

KostasIII  says:

ALSO

Krissy

The word Kristina in greek is " χριστινα" or in capital "ΧΡΙΣΤΙΝΑ "

The "Dance is the rhythm of life" is "χορεψε στον ρυθμο της ζωης" or " ΧΟΡΕΨΕ ΣΤΟΝ ΡΥΘΜΟ ΤΗΣ ΖΩΗ" and spells "xorepse ston rithmo tis zois"

The Problem is that most of the greek words are accented.

Mail me if you want to sent you pictures with the exact greek letters and accent

now

Jay

the translation is

kostas, found a translation - O, TI, MAI, TREFE, MAI KATASTREFE. The original phrase is in latin "Quod me nutrit me destruit" Angelina Jolie has this tattoo and it is quite popular (see what u can learn when you research!) Hopefully not so popular tattoed in greek. So do u agree with this translation or is yours closer to the original? And what is the best greek font to download, anyone? Thanks again kostas

RAZOR  says:

-Does anyone know the Greek word for BROTHERHOOD? --> ΑΔΕΛΦΟΤΗΤΑ this also means fraternity in English...

Can somebody translate "live your passion" in greek for me? --> ΖΗΣΕ ΤΟ ΠΑΘΟΣ ΣΟΥ

I really find it strange that so many people are trying to find Greek words through this site...Why dont you go to a tattoo parlor and ask? Arent these guy supposed to know? Also you should be aware that simple expressions can be said in different ways...so make sure you get the one that has the meaning you actually want. I can spot quite a few terrible mistakes on the pics above as well : "Everything is more beautiful because we are doomed" it should be : "ΤΑ ΠΑΝΤΑ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΠΙΟ ΟΜΟΡΦΑ ΕΠΕΙΔΗ ΕΙΜΑΣΤΕ ΚΑΤΑΔΙΚΑΣΜΕΝΟΙ". In other words this girl got one of the shitiest tattoos I've ever seen. I dont know if all the Greek letters I've written will appear, judging from previous posts there has to be a problem with the encoding...You can try fixing that by going to the 'View Tab' -> 'Encoding' -> and if you have any kind of Greek installed choose it...

RAZOR  says:

ok once more I'm going to use capital letters - I also suggest to everyone that wants to have a tattoo with Greek letters to have it in capital letters it will look nicer. One example is the guy in the 'If you have to crawl to live, stand and die' which AGAIN is translated WRONG. The correct phrase (in English) should be: 'It is better to die [standing (up)] or [on your feet] than to crawl to live' as you can see it is a little bit tricky to get the exact translation...I used two ways to say 'stand up'...anyway... :)

1) 'Know Thy Self' -> ΓΝΩΘΙ ΣΕΑΥΤΟΝ or ΓΝΩΘΙ ΣΑΥΤΟΝ note that this is in Ancient Greek. You can also go to the wikipedia and type Know ThySelf.

2)Hi, can someone help me translate 'compassion' and 'star of the sea'. OK...I will :) compassion -> ΣΥΜΠΟΝΙΑ Now I would NOT advise you to have the second tattoo, it will look a little bit silly in Greek...Anyway the translation is ΑΣΤΡΟ ΤΗΣ ΘΑΛΑΣΣΑΣ

3)Erato --> ΕΡΑΤΩ

Enjoy :)

RAZOR  says:

Ok just spotted another big screw-up the tattoo in the pic that says 'Dangerous Thoughts' is COMPLETELY wrong! What this guy has tattooed means 'The Dangerous (stuff or things)' LOL! Be careful this is actually NOT funny people...

1)Calliope's Servant or (more likely) Servant of Calliope --> 'ΥΠΗΡΕΤΗΣ ΤΗΣ ΚΑΛΛΙΟΠΗΣ'

2)'There is nothing impossible to him who will try' this is VERY tricky... ONE way to say that in Greek is : ΤΙΠΟΤΑ ΔΕΝ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΑΔΥΝΑΤΟ ΓΙΑ ΑΥΤΟΝ ΠΟΥ ΠΡΟΣΠΑΘΕΙ ok then I think one phrase that is much stronger in Greek is 'Ο ΤΟΛΜΩΝ ΝΙΚΑ' keep in mind though that this means 'HE WHO DARES WINS' :) or you can combine the two and then you'll have something like this : ΤΙΠΟΤΑ ΔΕΝ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΑΔΥΝΑΤΟ ΓΙΑ ΑΥΤΟΝ ΠΟΥ ΤΟΛΜΑ . which means 'nothing is impossible for the one (or for he) who dares... just make sure you KNOW exactly whats the meaning of your tattoo in English before you proceed to have it in Greek.

Melissa, your name means BEE (the insect) in Greek.

Although we call the bee [m E lissa] and your name is [mel I ssa] it will look EXACTLY the same...Your name is 'μελισσα' in lower case Greek.

Also i would like to correct my last post "which means 'nothing is impossible for the one (or for HIM) who dares".

Cheers!

Vae Victis or Woe to the Vanquished --> ΟΥΑΙ ΤΟΙΣ ΗΤΤΗΜΕΝΟΙΣ in Ancient Greek. There is of course the expression that has the opposite meaning i.e. Gloria Victis or Glory to the Vanquished --> ΔΟΞΑ ΤΟΙΣ ΗΤΤΗΜΕΝΟΙΣ again in Ancient Greek.

Enjoy...

I want the word 'wisdom' tattooed in greek, but i dont know the difference in the following three translations: ΣΟΦΙΑ, ΣΥΝΕΣΗ, ΦΡΟΝΗΣΗ if anyone knows the difference... please let me know...and which one is the simple literal translation?

NOW - we're talking! Thats a 'nasty' question you got there! If you want to learn more about these words and their meanings you should study Aristotle (Aristotle's Nichomachean Ethics). You can go to wikipedia and find out more. Just to give you a hint : Prudence or PHRONESIS means behaving according to the golden mean generally, and is used to find the moral virtues, each of which is a golden mean between two imprudent behaviors or vices...SYNESIS means unification, meeting, sense, conscience, insight, realization, mind, reason.

As you can see there are so many different meanings...its not an easy thing to find the 'correct' one.Goto wikipedia and type PHRONESIS,SYNESIS,WISDOM for more info; I really think it is the BEST site.

Zoe and Gregory --> ΖΩΗ and ΓΡΗΓΟΡΗΣ or Ζωη and Γρηγορης or ζωη and γρηγορης . The last one is wrong though since as in most (all?) languages the first letter of a name should always be capitalized.

Phrase: Always and Forever --> Now that is difficult because essentially both words have the same meaning in Greek. Both words mean 'For Ever' so I advise you to forget about that one...

"One minute of patience, ten years of peace" --> 'ΕΝΑ ΛΕΠΤΟ ΥΠΟΜΟΝΗΣ, ΔΕΚΑ ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΗΡΕΜΙΑΣ' or 'ΕΝΑ ΛΕΠΤΟ ΥΠΟΜΟΝΗΣ, ΔΕΚΑ ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΓΑΛΗΝΗΣ'

"The tongue has no bones, yet it breaks bones" --> 'Η ΓΛΩΣΣΑ ΚΟΚΚΑΛΑ ΔΕΝ ΕΧΕΙ ΚΑΙ ΚΟΚΚΑΛΑ ΤΣΑΚΙΖΕΙ' I really do not advise you to have this tattoo though...it is something that most Greeks will find funny (to have as a tattoo).

Paige -- nope, it doesnt matter if it's capitalized or not, whatever u prefer or whatever looks best to you. you're the one wearing it :)

Johan -- "I am what I am" is... "eimai afto pou eimai" Usually theres more than 1 translation, this is the most simple form.I already have a tattoo, but I want to get more added to it, not sure what I want yet. It's my sign... capricorn, in a type of tribal'ish... anyway, im 100% Greek, from the USA. i wanted something different... for both here and when Im there. I want to represent here on the eastcoast, I love Greek history, so maybe I'll get something a little more than just words? If I get words, I dont want anything like my 'name', 'last name', etc. I was thinking of getting something that doesnt really translate to Greek fully, something American, written in Greek letters (which would make sense to Greeks, since I was born and raised in America, and most of Greece already knows how to speak English. I'll think about it before I make up my mind. Let me know what u guys think... ??? Efkaristo poli re pedia.Elias

CLINT:it's : "?????? ??????? ??? ????? ??? ?? ??????????? "

SABRINA the translation is right, and in ancient greek u'd write it like this:

????? ????? ?????? ?????

also LAUREN the missing letters are: " ? " and " ?"

and born for this is "?????????? ??? ????".

MIKE in Greek is " ???? " but it should have this symbol

" , " over the a letter.

SEXYGREEKFEMME patience is " ??????? ".

YOHAN "i am what i am" is "????? ???? ??? ?????".

SUNNY: serenity is "??????"

and PAIGE:no,it doesn't make a difference for the meaning if u use a capital A.

most of the pictures are either mispelled or don't give the actual meaning, pics 1 4 and 5,and also the last 2 are correct.

"τα αγαθα κοποις κτωνται"

"ΤΑ ΑΓΑΘΑ ΚΟΠΟΙΣ ΚΤΩΝΤΑΙ" (in capitals)

for ADAM: adam i think what ur looking for and is closest to meaning is:

"κρατα γερα"or "ΚΡΑΤΑ ΓΕΡΑ" and means hold on tight or be strong or resist, endure, hold firm.

for HEATHER: live for today is "ζησε το σημερα"--" ΖΗΣΕ ΤΟ ΣΗΜΕΡΑ".

for PRIYA: princess is "πριγκιπισσα"---"ΠΡΙΓΚΙΠΙΣΣΑ" and elegant is:

" κομψος "------" ΚΟΜΨΟΣ" (USED FOR A GUY)and "κομψη"------" ΚΟΜΨΗ " (USED FOR GIRLS)

I am looking to get a tattoo with my brother, and we were thinking of getting something in Greek, as it is such a beautiful language, with so much history. However, we don't speak Greek so we're not really sure what to get. Perhaps something along the lines of "God is within us" or Brother and Sister Always" . Some other quotes we were considering: "Trust in the Lord" 'Never Torn Apart" "Sister" and/or "Brother". Or something with our names. Mine is Terra, and my brother's is Corey. Any help would be much appreciated! I wish I knew Greek to be able to form these on my own.

Hey, I was wondering if anyone could translate these three words in Greek for me. I'm hoping to get a Greek tattoo on my lower right hip, but I need some help.

Adventure

Dreamer

Fate

Could I get those translated in both Upper Case and Lower Case? And what is a good font to use? Anyone know how much they typically cost? Thank you oh so very much!

I am very interested in the lettering on the "beautiful" tattoo at the very top. I've done a lot of research on what I am getting for my tattoo. I fell in love with that lettering as soon as I saw it. Three of my five letters that I need for my tattoo are actually in the "beautiful" tattoo but I need the other two to make sure they all look the same! If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks so much!

The name "Noah" is going to be the same regardless... because it's a name.

You should just find the greek letters that make the same sounds, and spell "NOAH" using them. That's the best you're going to do.

hey felix the cat.....go into your bag of tricks and find some tape for your mouth and fingers. we all know it is call freedon of speach or type, and we also know it is called freedom to put whatever we want on our bodies. if you don't like... do not get involved. i guess then this is none of your business. i wonder what makes you COOL.......? not your brain. take your anger somewhere else. Well some translations are wrong...The letters are right but for example "ressurection" is "ΑΝΑΣΤΑΣΗ" with capital letters and "ανασταση" with small....

Fie.."only trust yourself" is 'ΝΑ ΕΜΠΙΣΤΕΥΕΣΑΙ ΜΟΝΟ ΤΟΝ ΕΑΥΤΟ ΣΟΥ" with capital letters and "Να εμπιστευεσαι μονο τον εαυτο σου" with small.."Be faithful to yourself" is "NΑ ΕΙΣΑΙ ΠΙΣΤΟΣ ΣΤΟΝ ΕΑΥΤΟ ΣΟΥ" or "ΝΑ ΕΜΠΙΣΤΕΥΕΣΑΙ ΤΟΝ ΕΑΥΤΟ ΣΟΥ" both have the same meaning...

If anyone has a question i am greek and i can help! =)

Is there any symbol in greek for the word family?

inot_1986  says:

Hey pat..

The word family in greek is spelled "οικογ?νεια" and comes from the word oikos (house) and the word genos (race, kind) so the word in english is ekogenia (phonetic translation).

I'm from Greece i don't know to speak very good English but i can help you with the translation !!! :P

Nikos  says:

Melissa: "Live, Dream, Travel" in Greek = "????, ?????????, ????????"

Ben: "Sharlie" = "?????" and your brother "Matthew" = "??????"

Janell: "Family" = "??????????" and "Oliver" = "??????" (look closely to the > at ?????? it has a > before it !!!)

Lauren: "strength" = "??????" and "Eternity" = "??????????"

Gemma Allaway: "Annie" = "????" (look closely to the > at ???? it has a > before it !!!) and "Androniki" = "?????????"

Kate: "Purity" = "????????"

amped: "True Love" = "??????? ?????"

Amber: "Nothing in the world worth having comes easy" = "?????? ???? ???? ????? ??? ???????? ??????"

Amanda Kladis: "The heart that loves is always young" = "??? ?????? ??? ????? ????? ????? ???"

MikeyGee16: "Grace is waiting at heavens gate" = "????????? ????????? ???? ????? ??? ??????????" Sorry MikeyGee16 but > has a lot of translations in Greek language so i am not sure if this is right !! :(

Megzz: "Love never fails" = "? ????? ???? ??? ????????"

laurend33: "blessed be thy name" = if you're girl "?????????? ??? ?? ????? ???" and = if you're man "??????????? ??? ?? ????? ???"

chiara: "Each flower is a soul that blossoms in the nature" sorry but i don't know how to write this in ancient Greek but in dimotiki it's like = "???? ???????? ????? ??? ???? ??? ??????? ???? ????"

Shane: "Power of the mind" = "? ?????? ??? ??????"

germo73: "Friends For Life" = "????? ??? ??? ???" It's like "friend for ever" = "????? ??? ?????" you can try this "???? ?? ????? ??? ?????? ??? ?? ??? ??????????? ????" it has deep meaning in Greek but i can't find the English one, maybe is something like "I wish the leaves of our friendship never turned into yellow" but it's not the right translation! It's to weird like this ! Anyway in Greek this is to much WoW!!!:P

If someone want to help him translate something small, then let me know! leave your message here :P byebye
