The Hebrew tattoo craze exploded once mega-celebrities such as Madonna and Britney Spears began practicing Kaballah and Victoria Beckham and her soccer superstar husband, David Beckham, got matching Hebrew tattoos as a testament to their love and devotion. However, just like the Japanese kanji craze at the turn of the century, foreign lettering tattoos in any language are subject to scrutiny and misinterpretation unless you speak the language yourself or know (and trust) someone who does. First of all, not many American cliches and idioms translate directly into a phrase that makes sense in another language. Commonplace sayings like "keep it real" or "what the hell" lose their meaning when translated into a different dialect. Additionally, there is not a Hebrew equivalent to every single American word that exists. Many times translation websites simply select a translation that comes closest to the original word. In Hebrew lettering, the same set of characters is used to mean "human" as well as "husband", depending on the context, so that a tattoo that is supposed to say "I love my husband" can just as easily mean "I love my human".
Keep in mind also that there is a very specific calligraphy and style of lettering for each Hebrew character. Foreign languages that utilize characters have precise lines and nooks and crannies that we as Americans may not understand. It's not like the English alphabet where an A is an A no matter how shabbily it is drawn; if it has two long lines and a shorter line connecting the two, it's an A. Hebrew characters, on the other hand, may look astoundingly similar but actually mean something completely different.
When we write in English, it doesn't matter if our style of writing is print or cursive, bubble letters or block letters. The same is not true in many foreign languages, including Hebrew.

So if you're thinking about getting a Hebrew tattoo, be sure to consult not just one, but several sources beforehand. Just as we have modern English and Old English, other languages have modern and ancient dialects as well. Online translators can be helpful but are not always accurate; it is best to find a native speaker or Hebrew scholar just to be sure.

You'd have to give the actual names, because in Hebrew there are similar sounding letters that are different. For instance: Tina and Thomas are spelled with different T's (Like Theta and Tau in greek). Post their actual names and I'll send you the Hebrew script...

I'm posting this message as a general tip: 2 of every 4 translations I get to check for people in this blog are erronious. The most common mistake is that people that only know popular spoken Hebrew tend to switch imperative with future tense. Make sure you know who you're getting it from...

Okay, several people have been asking me about the pronounciation dots that go along with Hebrew writing. These are in fact the vowels. But unlike Latin, one CAN do without them. How does one know how to pronounce? Common sense... that's it. Most Hebrew speakers don't know how to dot texts anyway. There are also the biblical "dots", that appear in scriptures. These are actualy like musical notes, that tell how one should sing the text.

There is no direct mention in the bible of sisterly love. The closest, as far as I know, is the love and fidelity between Naomi and Ruth. The 'Philea' word is in fact Greek, not Hebrew. I'll send you "Sisterly love" in Hebrew, as is, with no scriptural reference...

For those who asked me about the "Rashi script":
It IS indeed Hebrew script. It's a beautiful beautiful script, although very tough to read for modern secular Hebrew speakers. I myself read it like a child taking reading lessons. But it is aestheticaly pleasing. So thumbs up to those who liked it.

Arameic and Hebrew share the same basic script. It's very similar. No, I can't translate into Arameic well, as I am not very fluent in it, and can only read and partially understand. Just basic words here and there really... sorry

As a rule, whenever one wants the sentence to read from top to bottom, one must simply rotate the sentence (or word) 90 degrees counter clockwise...

Seems like Adi has the translations down for the most part, but if anyone needs any simple phonetic changes like names and such into Hebrew, drop me a line at katechis@gmail.com
Also, I am familiar with nikoodos (the vowels) that Adi wasn't used to, so if you need help with that as well, I can do that. For the most part, no one really uses them though.

The only cases I dont use Nikud, are transliterations of names, because there are no rules for doing them. That's why I skip them. With everything else I do use them. People don't usually write with nikud beacause they know the words, but mainly because they don't know how to! Few do! I do! Which Nikud am I not used to?
Still, I'm glad that you're willing to share this project. I translate and double check other translations.

The Ankh is the egyptian symbol of life. There is also a Hebrew one, called "Chai", and you may have seen it on neckleces, many Jewish people wear them as a symbol of life. I'll send it to you along with the translation, maybe you'll like it...

It doesn't really translate very well. It comes out in Hebrew as Gibberish about going back and forth in a circular motion (-: I'm wrecking my brain and I can't find a proper proverb to correspond. There's a positive one in Hebrew (not very threatening), there's a military saying (not very literary though), and that's it. Sorry... Try something else perhaps?

You're right. In biblical times pagan priests used to tattoo their skin, and to differenciate themselves from the pagan ways, the Jews forbade this practice. But many non orthodox Jews do get tattoos nowadays, and when they die, the morticians remove the tattoos before burial.

The vowel dots are immaterial and do not change the meaning. There are different words for different kinds of strength, like in English: "Strength", "Might", "Power", "Force" etc. Which do you want?

I get quite a bit of requests for "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine" from men. The fact is that this phrase (from "Song of Solomon") is that of a woman and her beloved man. So I would suggest a quote for men, from that same very song (in the bible): "As a lily among the thorns, so is my beloved among the daughters (=maidens)". This means that all girls are nothing in comparison to the man's sweetheart. Think it over...

As a Jewish person, I think getting a tattoo in Hebrew is not only a disgrace to the Jewish religion but also discredits those that died in the Holocaust. Hebrew is used in Judaism in prayers that are 3,000 years old and in all the sacred books Jews believe are from God. To tattoo a language like this on your body is almost rude to Jewish people everywhere. And as for discrediting Holocaust victims, not only were victims forced to get tattos but 6,000,000 were Jewish. This is a language that means a great deal to Jews everywhere and as one, I ask you to think of another language to put on your body.

I am also Jewish, grandson to 4 (!) death camp survivors, and i say it's okay, and not at all offensive, neither to all Jews (funny...I don't remember voting for Leah as a representative of the entire Jewish nation...), nor to Holocaust survivors (not the ones i know anyway). it's true that tattoos are removed from the body before a Jewish burial, because it's contrary to the rabbinical laws, but every second person in israel has one!

it is correct, but kind of silly. it's like a dictionary, when you look for a word and it shows you two versions of it. it says: "Grandpa, Grandfather". so it's a bit redundant, one of the two is enough.

Hey everyone...if you need help I can help you translate. Just remeber that some things don't sound right in Hebrew. For example, if you want initials and there is a vowel that could be problematic in Hebrew. Also, don't get a tattoo with nikud. That screams that you have no idea what your tattoo says. nikud are the "dots" that tell the vowels. No one uses them. Lastly, just so you know be careful in what you have written on your body. For Jews, not all, you are not supposed to mark your body, which is why some people don't have tattoos and there are some who could possibly feel insult because of the writting you chose.

Nizar, I strongly disagree with what you just said about nikud.
I'm Israeli too, and I think having nikud (as long as it's done correctly) with some hebrew tattoos really adds a lot to them, making them seem more biblical or poetic. Just because most Israelis don't know how to read/write with nikud anymore doesn't mean it's useless and doesn't have aesthetic qualities. Poetry books in Hebrew, and the Bible of course, are still written and printed with nikud.

Got my tat done the other day, just my daughter's name by itself, looks great! did pay for translation but only $5 dollars (American). Being in the UK though with the exchange rate meant it was about £2.50, less than you can buy a pint of beer for here now. Would recommend www.hebrew-tattoo.com to anyone, they dealt with my request in a matter of hours and gave a very personal service, showed me lots of fonts and did a stencil version of my word too. Does anyone know though where I can get a trustworthy, cheap Arabic translation done? There is something to be said for a person co-opting another culture without bothering to understand any part of it.
Guys, if you're looking to get a Hebrew tattoo, think about why it's important to you. You want "I am my beloved and my beloved is mine?" Cool. But look into it, so you know it's part of a traditional Jewish wedding vow, and figure out how it's personal to you (and I say this not to sound snotty, but to make it frigging special and so it's not insulting to people who regard it as a sacred vow).
Realize your name might not have a traditional Hebrew translation, especially if you're looking for some biblical connection. My Hebrew name and English names are completely different, and I'm similar to many of my friends.
You're not going to learn what you need to on the internet. Please show this culture some respect and research what you're doing.
Because in the end, if you don't, we'll be laughing at you as you proudly display your new Hebrew tattoo that reads, "I am a pencil cake" (and yes, I've seen that.).
I live in Israel, so if anyone needs to translate any word or sentence to Hebrew, I'd like to help.

Only Biblical names can be "literally" translated into Hebrew. Names like "David" "Hannah" "Rachel" "Jeremiah" "Sarah" "Caleb" "Israeli names, can of course be written in Hebrew. Names like "Jayden" and "Hemingway" may be WRITTEN in Hebrew characters but therer's no way to "translate" them to Hebrew. Hebrew has no "w" it would be a vav or"v" instead. SO Hemingway would be "HemingVay" so if you want native Hebrew speakers to laugh at your tattoos...then have a non-biblical name tattood in Hebrew on your body.

Hebrew is actually a Holy language to Jews, not just something conversational, and it goes way against Judaism to get a tattoo. This is not only quite ironic but very very sad.

For lane: the text you are asking for is a vary famous biblical quote, that Angelina Jolie tattooed on her back vertically and turned out very nice. You can find pictures of that on-line or you could give me your e-mail and I'll send you a pic file just for the lettering.

PEOPLE - Think a little clearer when you're getting a tattoo. They are forever, and if you don't already know hebrew, then what's to say you forget what you're tattoo means. Having your words 'translated' isn't real. These words have a meaning in the langauge you write it in. They lose importance changing them into hebrew.
Don't just get a hebrew tattoo if it's only for a more pleasing tattoo. I know English doesn't sound as pretty, but for my twin sister and I, it's beautiful. It's a language that for some reason (on here), however, is frowned at. You speak the language, why get something in something that you don't know?
And I also take offense from people on here asking for translations involving clearly non-jewish affiliated sayings (mainly involving Jesus). Jesus can't read as jesus, first off, because there is no 'J' in the hebrew langauge. And second, you're all just a bunch of inconsiderate followers of the latest craze, no matter what meaning you give it afterwards. It costs more for removal than putting it on.

Jacob Sayid : mem-sofit is the right way to spell it. That first right/wrong was actually the only correct one on this page! The right/wrong underneath in the right says vacation. The wrong one really is wrong, because it means absolutely nothing.
And to anyone looking at the tattoo with "crucified with Christ" in the scroll held by birds, and are thinking that if they copy that one they'll have it down, are wrong as well. That tatto has no mention of Jesus or Christ on it. It actually says the messiah, and in the right company would never even be though of the way that man probably intended.

Asking for Hebrew "translations" online will not do anyone any good because you need to see the Hebrew letters... Find an Israeli or a Jew, make friends with them, and ask them for write your phrases in Hebrew for you... And for the person asking for a DATE to be "translated" into Hebrew... numbers are numbers. You do not translate numbers into another language...
I want a date using Hebrew numerals, which is letters. It is possible, I was told so.

Actually, the tattoo that's supposed to be "freedom" is completely wrong, and the word you posted as the right one is wrong too. The word on the tattoo makes no sense at all, and the one you said is "freedom" means "vacation". The word for freedom is different. Also, the tattoo that's supposed to say "Lord's" makes no sense, either. The one that's supposed to be "life" actually means "alive". The one where it says "of god and grace" is spelled backwards. The one that's supposed to be "grandad" actually says "granfather, grandad". The one that's supposed to be "crucified with Christ" actually says "crucified on the messiah".

I'm not sure you bothered to read much on this page and/or the posts.
The blog was written by "BecauseIlive" and she put the pics on etc. All and all a nice blog... The guy helping is called Adi who is most certainly qualified and does that out of his own generosity FREE OF CHARGE... He has his own site (you can look it up on earlier comments he made) but still helps people who comment on this blog from time to time.
I only write this because he helped me with my tattoo and seems to be the only guy around not trying to make money out of this.

As an Israeli jewish guy, i gotta tell you all, there's lots of wrong translation, misspelling and wrong punctuation in the above pictures, and it looks kinda retarded for whom who can actually read it. LOL
To get the SPELLING right almost any common hebrew speaker can do, but to get the PUNCTUATION (all the little dots and lines surrounding the letters) right, i would get some kind of university grammar student, because it's not something used everyday in newspapers etc.
you do study PUNCTUATION during elementary school, but i wouldnt rely on any adult to remember any of it.
