Tattoo Ideas: Italian Words + Phrases

Italian tattoos come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The Italian cross, the Italian horn, the green, white and red Italian flag (including a number of variations of it, like the flag condensed in an outline of Italy or in an outline of stars). I've even seen a partially completed sleeve dedicated solely to Italian food; it features a plate of macaroni and meatballs, a jug of wine and a cannoli. Luckily, unlike Latin (which is an extinct language), Hebrew and Arabic (which are very complex languages that use specific character sets in lieu of letters, requiring an exact knowledge of calligraphy) or Gaelic (which has numerous different dialects), Italian is a fairly easy language to translate.
Most words that exist in English can be translated into Italian without much difficulty. As with the English language, however, be extra careful to make sure you get the Italian spelling correct. Reverse two letters and your beautiful, inspirational tat becomes nonsensical. I once saw an episode of "Miami Ink" on the TLC channel where the customer wanted "per sempre" tattooed on his arm, which is Italian for "forever". It wasn't the tattoo artists fault, because the customer had designed the lettering for the tat himself, but when it was finished it read "pre sempre" instead. It's only one letter off but this unfortunately means nothing in Italian.
Exercise caution when it comes to the popular Italian phrase "life is beautiful" which many people, including Lindsay Lohan, have been getting recently. "La vita e bella" is the correct translation, and even though it uses the same words, some people have been getting "la bella vita" which actually translates to "the beautiful life", and is used in Italy to describe someone who is living a life of wealth, throwing parties and spending extravagant amounts of money.
As with any tattoo that is done in a foreign language not your own, make sure you do your homework. Double check your translation with several sources. A native speaker is your best bet, someone who speaks Italian as their first language, English as their second, or vice versa. If a native speaker is not available to you, your next best bet is a Italian scholar who has studied the language extensively. Last but not least, there are several online translators who offer their services for free. Although they can be very useful, keep in mind that it is important to ensure your translation is correct by either using several different online translators or confirming it's accuracy with native speakers on an Italian forum or message board.

wow..i search english tattoos and i find italian tattoos (incorrect..)ok.. ____
Beautiful life is "la vita è bella"_________________"Who speaks badly of Macaroni is a fool". - Macaroni?!? maccheroni?? Pasta?!?!I'm not sure what is Macaroni But in correct italian is:
Chi parla male dei maccheroni è un fesso.
"è nu fesso chi dice male dei maccheroni" is half correct italian, half dialect of Napoli..__________________________This is life and this is joy: an hour of embracing and then to die.
"Questa è la vita e questa è la gioia: un'ora di abbracci e poi morire (or e poi la morte)_______________________________Love is blind -> L'amore è cieco (is--->è)_______________________________
Like father, like son. --> Tale padre, tale figlio__________________________________________
@Kay: beautiful love = amore bello__________________________
@girliegirlx3: live to love = vivere per amare
_______________________
@Rugbyplaya: my english is not perfect, i don't know the word "shall", it's for the hypotetic future?!? and i'm not sure for "sheds" and for "he who" but i think that is:
Colui che verserà il suo sangue assieme al mio sarà mio fratello__________________________________________
@E "One step closer" i'm not sure for the mean in english, i think that "un passo più vicino", but in the images is "un passo più uomo"but i think that isn't correct :S __________________________
@elizabeth "She flies with her own wings" flies is fly for her, yes?!? "lei vola con le sue ali"
______________________
@Lara in god we trust it's not easy... Noi crediamo in dio , Ci affidiamo a dio, Confidiamo in dio, are all correct but the mean.... i don't know what it is the best..
_______________________
@Jenny life is what you make it = La vita è quello che (tu) ne fai
____________________
@ Elizabeth Beautiful soul is "bella anima" or "anima bella" but the mean...

@Jane pashtagni'' (pashtagnay?) is not italian...
___________________
@Elizabet m Truth is Verità and Finchè c'è vita c'è speranza is correct
__________________
@ Morgan if you have to crawl to live stand and die "Se devi vivere strisciando, alzati e muori."_________________
@Michele "my beautiful life" --> La mia vita è bella, that in englis is "my life is beautiful", because "La mia vita bella" it's not beautiful.._________________
@Ky "sing and it will pass" "Canta che ti passa"
_____________________
@Kris: l'amore è come il vento, non posso vederlo ma posso sentirlo it's ok!! :)
_____________________
@Gina in italian not exist the literal translation.. "Unico amore" I think that is the best translation..
________________________
@Lexi, "love, faith, respect".. Love = amore, respect= rispettofaith... religious belief: fede, but is for "you think at the person" is fiducia (trust) and if is "faith for homeland" or "you are true whit other person is lealtà (loyalty).
________________
@Piper (i like you name!!!) "Verso il sogno"___________________
@Rickie: "Love is our future" "L'amore è il nostro futuro"
_____________________
@mitchellmommy: "always remember i love you" is "I remember" or "You remeber" ?!?!
I -> "ricorderò sempre che ti amo" --> litteral (I remeber always that i love you)
You-> "ricorda sempre che ti amo"
I will love you forever & always --> in italian always and forever isn't different because always is "sempre" and forever "per sempre"... "ti amerò per sempre" ________________________
strenght is "Forza" and believe... uff.. (have confidence in?!?) "speranza" ____________________
ok.. are the 2 of the morning.. at this time... good night!!
one of the pictures on the bottom, I believe the translation is wrong... "la PURA" means the THE PURE not the simple
also an italian....ppl gotta realize there are differnt dialects across italy...every province has variations, can even differ from city to city....
its easier to look at italian sayings and go from there, anytime you try to take a english saying and translate it to italian there is potential for trouble...some things in english dont tranlsate directly, or have no meaning together in italian...
so my advice would be research some italian sayings, and their respected english translation....and perhaps you will find something more authentic italian that both makes sense and is gramatically correct
i've been so confused with translation but it looks like some of you knoe your italian so im putting my trust in you cuz i am getting this TATTOOED on my body: how would you say "Faith, Hope, Love"?
is it "Fede, Speranza, Amore"?
I wanted to know the correct translation for Where there's life, there's hope. I want that as a tattoo but i want to make sure its 100% correct!! Please help!!
does any one know how to write my love in italian
mi amor
"FAITH, HOPE, LOVE"?
Can anyone tell me how to say "Love conquers all" in italian.
would be incredibly grateful if someone could translate this"
"""somewhere there's someone who dreams of your smile"""
i love, love, LOVE italian... !! i hope this page keeps going!! thank you, i mean, grazie !!
DOES ANYONE KNOW THE CORRECT TRANSLATION OF "MY BEAUTIFUL LIFE" IN ITALIAN?
IS IT "LA MIA BELLA VITA"?
senzafine.
I know that "senza" means "without" and that "fine" means "end..." if I combine the two words, then will it make a legitimate compound word, or is it just a collection of letters? Thanks!
does anyone know the correct translation for these phrases:
"forget regret"
"to each his own"
thanks
can u please translate for me into italian ,,,
EVERY ME AND EVERY YOU
hey there!
i am getting tattoo'd on thursday and need to have the correct translation of:
THE WAY
THE TRUTH
THE LIFE
i will have these tattoo'd, all in reference to Jesus Christ. THANK YOU for your help! i appreciate it!
"to each his own"
A ciascuno al suo.
How do You say I will love you forever in Italian, I'm getting a tattoo tomorrow and I am really scared I will have the wrong translation.. !!
elena, i'm not questioning you at all, but i was just wondering, how accurate are the things you wrote? i'm just scared to get something permanently on my body if it's not correct. my father was born in italy and speaks it fluently but he is calabrez so some things he and his family say are slang and i wanted to further research "sing and it will pass"... thank you! hopefully you read this.
how would you say "grow up and blow away" in italian please? :)
i really hope you all think about what you are doing before you go through with this. i came across this site looking for a tattoo design, and not only can people not write well in italian, but they can hardly write well in english. let me tell you something: you think coming up with some cute catchy phrase in english and turning it into italian makes it authentic. you HAVE to remember (and i know it may be hard for those of you who have never studied another language extensively) that even if a translation is PERFECT with word for word phrases, it would still make no sense to an italian.
also, i beg of you not to trust anyone on this site. not even me, and I live in Sardegna, have lived in Siena, and translate italian-to-english texts for a living. people here are transtlating things incorrectly, taking otherwise good translations and butchering them because they didn't match the phrase word for word in english, and even speaking of grammar completely incorrectly. anyone who tells you that ALL adjectives come after the noun should not be trusted. because, even though many adjectives do in fact follow the noun (la lingua e' difficile), there are still plenty of cases where the adjective precedes the noun. words like bello, vecchio, giovane, brutto, stesso, lungo, grande all come BEFORE the noun.
also, there are a million small mistakes posted here. for example, the translation of beautiful soul is what someone said: bella anima. however, they failed to mention that feminine nouns that begin with a vowel contract with preceding adjectives/articles/etc. so bella anima is actually bell'anima.
in conclusion, not only should you not trust random people on the internet who know a few words in italian and own a dictionary and therefore think that they are capable of translations (not to mention translations with two extremely difficult, complex, and dissimilar languages), but also you shouldn't just choose something "cute" in english and turn it into italian. that does not make it italian. it make it english written in italian. instead, try to find something with some real substance...something that exists in italian... because this is the real problem: if you want to translate the old italian "A chi dai il dito si prende anche un braccio" you get "To whom you a give a finger will also take an arm." that is a fine translation, but to us, it makes no sense. you would need to further render that into "Give them an inch and they'll take a mile." that is a good example of how you can't just turn one language into another. so stop taking advice from random know-nothings or know-some-but-not-enoughs. besides, "io so' io e voi nun siete un cazzo!"
Okay reading the last guy's comment-I agree, I would like an italian phrase that would be appropriate for this situation. My daughter's name is Rowan and I would like her name tatooed on my side with a phrase below it. Something equating to the fact that she is my ultimate love and reason for being. Not to mention I did not think that I could have children, desperately wanted one, and so she is like my miracle?????
Nick,
i trust you enough now that i have read your little "essay" you wrote up there. can you please tell me how to say "Faith, Hope, Love" in italian? i would really appreciate it. looks like you know your stuff:)
Ok so im getting another tattoo, im getting it on my foot, i already have one on the back of my neck saying Bella . i want to get an italian word on my foot something stating im Italian. does anyone have any ideas? please let me know my Appointment is tommrow to give my tattoo artist some ideas? i was going to put Italia, but that just means Italy. then i was thinking Italian, but let me know?
You know, I had to laugh becuase I thought I was the only one that saw these idiots tatto italian phrases on the selves in the wrong way. And Becca, "In God We Trust" There's so many ways to say it, but heres one :in dio che si fidiamo di

Hi,
I was wondering about having two tattoos, "Family is everything" and "the simple truth" (I understand above that is;"la pura verita" right?). I'm not looking for word-by-word translation. Okay, i actually went to Italy and i asked people while i was there if this was correct - but now this site has me not so sure. i have "MATTO BELLO" tatted on me. Matto means crazy and Bello means beautiful. I KNOW it is in masculine form - that was the point. and i was NOT trying to say "i am crazy and beautiful" i just wanted the words "crazy. beautiful." thats it. not a phrase, just 2 words. SOOO does anyone know if there is a hidden meaning or something wrong with this... ? the people in italy understood it, but now I'm worried. please help? thanks :)

Hi all, I'm Italian.. so you all can ask me a translation..
"love myself" in italian is "amo me stesso" if you want to say "I love myself"..
"love life" in italian is "amo la vita" if you want to say "I love life"
"my beautiful love" is "mio bellissimo amore"
"live and be fearless" is "vivi e non avere paura"
"I love all things Italian" is "amo tutte le cose italiane"
"beautiful life" is "la vita è bellissima" (life is beautiful) or "bellissima vita" but it's not so good in Italian.. our languages are a bit different, then sometimes we cannot translate exactly a phrase..

does anyone know how to say: Life is too beautiful to take for granted, in Italian?
"Life is too beautiful to take for granted" = "La vita è troppo bella per darla per scontata" literally, but the repetition of "per" does not sound really great... better "la vita è troppo bella per crederla dovuta", which is literally "life is too beautiful to think it's granted". Hope this helps. Cheers

PLEASE READ.......... For everyone on this site asking for a translation. You all need to grip your tiny little brains around the fact that English and Italian are different! And many times you can't translate an English "phrase" to Italian. The best you can do is translate each word, but you CAN NOT string them together to make a phrase in Italian. Just because alone the word means something DOES NOT mean it makes any sense what so ever strung into a sentence!!!! Now Im not saying this applies all the time, but in most of your cases it does.....

Hi I just want to write family in Italian on my arm. It is part of a family crest I am doing. I would ask my family but I want it to be a surprise so I would just like to know if it should be "Famiglia" or "La Famiglia" which is more grammatically correct?
Crysta, you posted that "la bella vita" should be "la vita bella." You are wrong. Not all adjectives in italian follow the noun. Adjectives talking about beauty, age, number, goodness, or size are all adjectives that precede the noun.
anyone know how you would say marilyn manson's cd.. "eat me drink me" in italian
tdog, "eat me drink me" in Italian is "mangiami bevimi". I teach Italian grammar, so you can trust this. Ciao
Monique, "My life, my way" in Italian is "La mia vita a modo mio". Ciao
Ashley, "beautifully unique" in Italian is "meravigliosamente unica". Ciao
Kness, "live for your word" in Italian could be translated as "Vivi seguendo la tua parola" (lit: live following your word), or you can go literal with "Vivi per la tua parola". Ciao
emily d, the translation for 'you cannot make others happy, without first being happy yourself' is "non puoi rendere felici gli altri, senza prima essere felice tu stesso". Nice idea and so true. Ciao
How do you say " God Is love" in italian..
is it "dio è l'amore" ?
Jessica, "God is love" in Italian is "Dio e' amore". Nice tattoo!!!
i was wondering if anyone knew how to say little beauty or live laugh love in italian
Hey I was wondering if anyone could translate this for me...
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
Alyssa, "little beauty" is "piccola bellezza" & "live laugh love" is "vivi ridi ama". Ciao
evan0361, "Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." literally in Italian is"Sii forte e coraggioso. Non essere terrorizzato; non essere scoraggiato, perche' il Signore tuo Dio sara' con te dovunque tu vada". In Italian it would sound better if you translate it as "Sii forte e coraggioso. Non aver paura; non scoraggiarti, perche' il Signore Dio tuo sara' con te ovunque tu vada" (LIT: Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid; don't discourage yourself, because the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go". Ovunque e dovunque in Italian is the same thing (wherever) but ovunque is more poetic. Ciao, Niky
PS: Trust me. I teach Italian grammar (How fun, right?).
how do u spell it in italian - 'i will love you forever' and 'your always be in my heart' many thanks x
Niky,
I was wondering if you could help me...I want to get a tattoo that says "Everything happens for a reason" I keep finding different translations but one of the ones that keeps coming up is "tutto succede per una ragione"..is this right?? Thank you in advance!!
id x, 'i will love you forever' in Italian is "Ti amero' per sempre". "you're always in my heart" is "Sei sempre nel mio cuore" and "you'll always be in my heart" is "Sarai sempre nel mio cuore", depending if you want to use the present tense or the future tense. Ciao.
Nikki, "Everything happens for a reason" is "tutto succede per una ragione". It's correct and a very true statement. A similar alternative could be: "There's a reason for everything" (C'e' una ragione per tutto). A native Italian like me would probably tattoo the second one since it's shorter and easier. I hope this help. Ciao
wrong. "vero" means "true", the word for truth is "verita' " -
how would i say the only the strong move in silance
how would i say the only the strong move in silance
I have one tatto, a ladybug, means luck. Now I am getting another tattoo on my wrist in an Italian phrase! I am half Calabrais and half Sicilian but I do not speak Italian. I really wanted my Italian phrase to be said in southern Italian dialect or Sicilian dialect but, I have a friend who lives in the North, an hour from Venice. He gave me his version of an Italian translation
A beautiful love = un bellissimo amore(to) Live, (to) Laugh, (to) Love= Vivere, Ridere, Amare(you) Live, (you) Laugh, (you) Love= Vivi, Ridi, Ama
I am trying to decide between "A beautiful love" and "Live, Laugh, Love". Help me decide!!! Anyway, I know this is a long post but I saw others trying to get a translation for the two phrases that I am deciding between (with your help PLEASE) and wanted to help out! So there ya go!
Alexandra, I like "Vivi, ridi, ama" because it's in the imperative tense and what's more imperative than live, laugh, and love? Ciao
A American friend tells me about this website...I believe that alot of people on here do not know what they talk about...It is hard to make a english statement into another Language...Sometime it have no meaning at all when you do that....Find a statement already in Italian that apply to your situation...It will make alot more sense...Alexandra martello...You should get you tatoo in the sicilian dialect if you are part sicilian...It is a beautiful language...and it is good that you know where you family come from...sorry for my bad english...haha-Adamo
I am getting a memorial tattoo for my father and I want the writing in Italian, so how would you say "In Loving Memory" and "Never Forgotten"?
Never Forgotten - Mai Dimenticato In Loving Memory - In Memoria Amabile.... That is what I have gotten so far but is that correct?
AGranchello3 I would love to get translations in sicilian dialect but I am unable to find anyone that can translate "Live, Laugh, Love" or "Beautiful Love" in Sicilian. The only translation I could find that I believed to be correct was from my Italian friend in Padova/Pauda, Italy.
Can someone translate 2 phrases for me into Italian: " Reach for the stars" and also " To dream is to believe"
Thank you, Wendy
hey does anyone know how to say "love always" in italian? thanks :)

Can anyone translate "Live, Laugh, Love" in Sicilian for me?
Can anyone translate "Live, Laugh, Love" in Sicilian for me?
Nicholas, you can't be literal. It won't make any sense. For "In Loving Memory" and "Never Forgotten" I would say "In memoria di..........Non ti dimentichero' mai" (In memory of........I'll never forget you". I hope this help. Ciao
Wendy, the closest translation for " Reach for the stars" is "Mira alle stelle" & " To dream is to believe" is "Sognare e' credere". Ciao
Sorry Wendy, I typed your name instead of mine when I was answering your question. Niky
Kat, "love always" is "ama sempre". Ciao
@ Andrew. "different, but the same" is "diverso, ma lo stesso" & "family forever" is "la famiglia per sempre". Ciao
Tommaso, if you have something in mind I can help you with the Italian translation. What do you think about "semplicemente delizioso" "simply selicious"???
niky: I originally got the idea of a food related tat when i saw at the bottom of a restaurant menu their slogan. it read, "non c'e` amore piu` sincero di quello del cibo" (there is no love more sincere than the love of food) i really like it, but i dont want to be a walking billboard for them. so i was hoping i would be able to find something else like it........
Hey! does anybody know how to say Friends forever and bestfriends???

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Orgoglio Di Famiglia.... means "pride in family" right ?

In english it would be pronounced "ch-o-tha".
Any help would be appreciated!
Hi i want to get "la bella vita" and i saw your transltion of it and "La vita e bella" is la bella vita like a bad thing to get then if your not super weathy because i still like it. Should the "la" in la bella vita be capital or not? Looking for ur oppinion on it if you can please
alo should it be la bella vita or la vita bella?
Someone wrote that it should be La vita bella because in Italian the adj. goes after then noun, and they're correct. HOWEVER, La bella vita is MUCH more common in the spoken language and sounds better. If you tattoo La vita e' bella...make sure that you put the accent over the "e" because if you don't it'll read "life and pretty" because the "e" without the accent means "and" in Italian. I'm fluent in Italian and can tell you that many times people have translated things incorrectly on this site, so BE CAREFUL....I would ask the advice of someone that speaks Italian as their FIRST language not just someone that took Italian in high school or college!
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could possibly translate this for me? I'd really appreciate it!
"Who you are, is God's gift to you. Who you become, is your gift to God"
Thanks!
wow. alot of you guys arent original at all. like seriously, half the things all of you want are the same things. im starting not to want a tattoo in italian anymore.
just because you think itll look cool in another language doesnt mean itll be grammatically correct.
you should have to experience the culture and the people there before making any decisions of the sorts.
but to those that this doesnt apply, i want "mangia"
im italian(obviously), have been ther multiple times, love to eat, and am currently attending culinary school.
i have no idea how to draw it up without it looking cheesy!
MY BLOOD MY LIFE ? ? ?
How do you say waste of bread... in sicilian, my father called me that all the time something like [ excuse spelling] i am just sounding it out...BONO BERSUE OR BONO BEER-SUE IT SOUNDS LIKE BONO BEER-SUE, I KNOW THATS NOT THE SPELLING BUT IT IS THE SOUND, CAN ANYONE HELP ME?
Hey come on please, help me out, i have been back here every few hours in hopes some one would have known this and helped me out. thank you

Hi there, I was reading ALLLL these comments and totally agree with the girl who says english phrases directly translated are meaningless- and make you look idiotic when you encounter a native. I actually study italian myself, but I'm ot confident enough in my ability to speak/write to use for a tatoo! I was wondering if there were any native speaker who could give me an italian equivalent for ;
"Where there s life there is hope", or
an italian equivlent to "les jeux sont faits" (the die is cast, fate, that kind of idea)
Thanks! x
I'm so sorry, but here it's full of mistakes! Please, ask to an italian mothertongue before do a tattoo with Italian words!! Tattoo is not a T-Shirt!!
If you have doubts, I can help you: my email is yucudi@gmail.com
i was wondering if anyone knew how to say love never fails in italian
hey uhm maybe some people dont care if it makes sense to an italian .... if the phrase is word for word right then it makes sense to whoever is getting it on theyre body and obviously it means something to them
Hi, just read that last comment and I totally agree with your point- If it means something to you then thats exactly the reason TO get tattooed- although if the language means nothing to you then maybe the tattoo should be in english so people can read it correctly? Otherwise it just seems to be a bit of a fashion statement and distorts the meaning? Does that make sense or am I reading too much into it?
I want to get a tattoo that represents this amazing year I've had. I just did a lot of things I never would have done before because I was scared, but now I'm feeling more 'carpe diem' and want a tattoo to commemorate this year & this new outlook on life.
Any ideas on a phrase that incorporates:
Flying (Volare)
No fear (Senza paura)
Life/Live (Vita, Vivi)

someone help me thanks
can someone please tell me if the sayin "crazy beautiful" exists in italian and if so wht it is..? could i use the italian word for crazy and the italian word for beautiful..? please let me kno thanks!
I have only studied Italian for 2 1/2 years but I noticed sooo many misspellings in the photos. If you're going to get a tattoo in a language you don't speak, ask yourself why you want it, because you can't fix it usually. On an episode of LA Ink, a guy wanted an Italian phrase containing the word "family" in it; no one on the show noticed, but the word was spelled the Spanish way, not the Italian way. If you want to reflect your heritage, do it with symbols, images, or things that actually mean something to you rather than misspelled words in a language you don't know.
Anyway I'm not a native speaker but here's the help I can provide:
@ktcakes: Crazy/beautiful is just the title of a film, so as far as it "existing" in Italian, I can't say it really does, but anyway. The word for crazy is pazzo (pazza is the feminine) and bello (bella is the feminine) means beautiful. I am guessing you are a lady so it would be "pazza bella," I suppose.
@Caz: One life="una vita"; live it is the imperative, like a command, so the translation would be"la vivi" or "la viva" for the formal. I think it would look better to say "una vita; vivi" without the la, which technically means "one life; live." Just my opinion. "Live and let live" is a rather English-oriented phrase; I think the translation would be "Vive e permetti vivere" but I am not sure.
@Ande: Use "fiera;" it's a more attractive word to say and read. "Orgoglioso" means the same thing EXCEPT it's masculine. If you want to use that word, use "orgogliosa."
@lyssa & kayla: "Love never fails" can be "l'amore non fallisce." Alternatively, "l'amore riesce" is "love succeeds." "She flies on her own wings" is, I think, "Lei vola sulle ali proprie" (minus the "lei" it means more or less the same thing; lei just indicates a female subject).
@Ryan C.: "Gli amici vengono e vanno, ma la famiglia e' per sempre." The e' is an e with a grave (accent going down from left to right). I have no idea what the translation you have means.
@mim: There is an excellent Italian book/movie called "Io non ho paura" meaning "I have no fear" or "I am not scared."
A really excellent Italian dictionary online is www.garzantilinguistica.it. You need to sign up but it's free and there are verb tables, etc. It is written from an Italian point of view rather than an English one so it is more precise.
how would you say " live it up" in italian.

GRACIE!!
Hey so again everyone if you are not sureee and are asking random people what things mean in italian you migghht just not know enough to trust people, again different dialects from each place to me all or most of those are wrong because sicily has a different dialect, and might mean the same for your familys heritage i am getting a tattoo allsooo but my whole family speaks it, and i trust them much more then people who are or may be using translators that are mostly wrong and write things crazyy =) but im just warning everyone its a big step and can take it back so think before your reading things thinking its not on your body forever, talk to a person who speaks italian fluently not a translator it will work much better and beleive me if you all have the italian heritage someone in your family sshallll speak it well enough!
so:
"where there is life, there is hope" = dove c'è vita, c'è speranza
embrace your dream = well..."embrace" literally is "abbraccia" but "abbraccia i tuoi sogni" doesn't make any sense, it could be "insegui i tuoi sogni " that's "follow your dreams".
follow your heart = is "segui il tuo cuore" ("insegui" is used when you have to achieve something...i don't know how to explain....example, in a rece, the second whant to catch the first one, right? well what he is doing is "inseguire". we use "segui" when you have to follow something, example "follow me" is "seguimi")
cherish your life = i really don't know how to translate this...
while i brathe, i hope = "mentre respiro, spero" but it doesn't sound so good in italian...
live each day as if it were the last = this is simple "vivi ogni giorno come se fosse l'ultimo", it's a famous phrase here too
so, i please anybody to not make a tattoo on the phrase i translate. I'm italian and i'm trying to help who whants to know the traslation of an english phrase in italian, but my english sucks big time!
so, if you want to know a translation, i can try to do it for you.
bye
to Nichole,
that's right, we have a lot of dialects and it depends on where you live, but the italian lenguage is one.
I mean, the different dialects are different ways to speak, not differents ways to write. for example If you listen to televistion, they speak normal italian.
Yes i know but have you noticed that there all using translators and its like almost worse than when schools try to teach italian it just sounds wrong, and yes ive listend to the tv and they speak italian but if people want it as there heritage id go with family, like my family wants me to do my tattoo in a different dialect because we are not from northern italy at all and there dialect is very much differnt. and to EVERYONE dont use translators..there no trustworthy, italian speaking people will help way more.. hahaha
i would help translate but jesus there are alot of quiestions good luckkkk too you Lupo!=)
ahahahah peace, girl:)
you are free to do your tattoo in every lenguage you want.
and anyway i agree, the italian translators really sucks, but also english ones, french ones,etcetc...

Lupo,
Thanks for the help!! Is there a difference between "dove" and "Finche"?
not sure if it was anwsered nick..
Il potere logora chi non ce l'ha
"Power wears out those who don't have it"
no problem Tara.
ther's a big difference between "finché" and "dove"
generally:
"dove" = "where" example: "where are you going?" = "dove stai andando"
"finche" = "until" example: "until death do us part" = "finché morte non ci separi"
but like every lenguage a word depense on the phrase you use it in
Aimee, Forever Beautiful in Italian is "Per Sempre Bella" or "Bella Per Sempre".
"Sei sempre bella" in Italian means "You're always beautiful". Ciao

CAN SOME ONE TRANSLATE, "MY LOVE MY STRENGTH" IN ITALIAN?
IS IT? "IL MIO AMORE LA MIA FORZA" ?
Hi All, Italy was the first place I travelled to by myself and gave me that feeling of independence and made me continue to push myself to do things I usually never would. I want to get a tattoo that reminds me to keep pushing myself. I'm thinking 'Vivere'. In other words - LIVE I understand this is the direct translation, but does in emcompass what I'm trying to get across? I'd appreciate your input!
I was wondering if anyone could translate "We must protect this house" into Italian. Only respond if you're absoltutely sure, please.

how do u say mam's boy....thanks
@michael vincent: mama's boy is either "mammone" or "cocco di mamma" but i don't think that either phrase has a very positive meaning...
read this for more: http://forum.wordreference.com/showthread.php?t=41
how do you say family above all else
Kathychoi: "La famiglia sopra tutto"
Micheal Vincent: Mammone or cocco di mamma are both correct, but as Kate says, their connotations are not positive. Cocco di mamma breaks down to mean the cuddler of mamma (more or less).
I currently have a chinese symbol for Happiness on my back. I want to get "life is beautiful" in Italian. Any suggestions of what to do....should I put it above the symbol? Somewhere else? Should I turn the symbol into something else. I'm looking for ideas. Thanks!
Does anyone here know what the phrase "live it up" translates to in Italian. Ive been told the correct translation is "Divertirsi" but i want to be completely sure.
Hi there i am italian, There are many ways to translate a phrase to italian, it's not that easy. You can give a sense or another by using some word instead of another, or even according to their sequence, so you should be careful since that tattoo will always be impressed on your skin. Since i enjoyed this thread and thinking some of you will have an italian sentence on his skin if you like a translation or a suggestion, feel free to write in this blog, or send me a mail to a_z72 (at) yahoo.com
Consider the following ones, they're ancient latin instead of current italian, but if i would make a tattoo i would consider them:
habere non haberi > to own, not to be own
memento audere semper > remember to always dare
(They were created by gabriele d'annunzio, a '900 italian poet and writer)
la vita è una maestra severa > Life is a severe (harsh) teacher
Slim > Silence is a source of great strength > Il silenzio è fonte di grande forza
AshleyE > "One step at a time" > Un passo alla volta
Ciao
HI. can u tell me the english translation of this quote?
Gesù disse... Il Regno di Dio è dentro di voi, tutto intorno a voi e non in palazzi di legno o di cemento...spezza un pezzo di legno e io sono li,alza una pietra...e mi troverai...
Thanks a lot...

Does anyone know how to spell.... in Italian
So Lucky?
He's my everything?
Without him I'd be lost?
Thank you to whom ever helps me
Also I'm needing to know a few more in italian...
Live with no no limits and No regrets?
One step closer?
I want to embrace my dreams with you?
If anyone can help me i would be thankful
@bella8482
So Lucky > fortunato (molto fortunato)
He's my everything > Lui è tutto per me
Without him I'd be lost > Senza lui sarei perduta (=female, perduto =male)
Live with no no limits and No regrets > Vivere (to live or 'vivi' you live) senza limiti e rimpianti
One step closer > un passo più vicino (literally, or "un passo avanti" a step forward)
I want to embrace my dreams with you > voglio abbracciare i miei sogni con te (literally, maybe you ment "weave" so "voglio intrecciare i miei sogni con te), but it sounds better to me "abbraccia i miei sogni" (embrace my dreams)
Ciao

does anyone know how to say follow your heart in italian?
and stay true to your heart in italian?
follow your heart > "segui il tuo cuore" or (sounds better to me) "segui il cuore" (follow the heart)
you might also consider (sounds even better to me) "ascolta il cuore" "hear the heart"
ciao
Wanting to get a tattoo that says "love rules without rules" in Italian. Looking to confirm the English to Italian translation. Any help would be great.
Although Italian is not my language, I would love some motivational words in Italian on my wrist. However, I'm not trying to translate a popular English phrase into something incomprehensible in Italian.I just want a basic "I am beautiful" or "I love myself".I've been researching "I am beautiful" for a while and I wondered if 'sono bella' or 'io sono bella' makes sense or if it is Completely wrong.Any help would be greatly apprectiated.R.
I am beautiful translates to "Sono bella or "Io sono bella". Either way works, but "Io sono bella" is more of a declarative statement.
"Love rules without rules" literally translates to "L'amore domina senza regole" but it doesn't sound as nice as its English counterpart.
Thank you Matteo. :]
Thanks Matteo
La famiglia sempre
does this mean family always and is this correct format?
thanks . . . <*3 Nica <*3
It's literally correct, but according to me "Famiglia per sempre" (family for-ever) sounds better as a tattoo
hey i am studying in italy and want to get a tattoo that means along the lines of "remember to live" like dont waste a day without doing what you want, and dont let life pass you by. I know that literally, remember to live in italian is "ricordo vivere" (i remember to live) and in latin is "memento vivere" (which i LOVE). can anyone help?? thanks so MUCH!!
What would be the best Italian translation for 'let us surrender to love' ?
Lauren, according to the best translatione should be "Arrenditi all'amore" (that literally is '(you) surrender to love'
TGE: memento vivere sounds very good, but it's latin not italian. You could consider also 'live every day like it is the last one' = Vivi ogni giorno come fosse l'ultimo
now i purpose you a quote from an ancient italian poet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorenzo_de'_Medici) "Chi vuol esser lieto sia, del doman non v'è certezza" / "everybody could hav fun, tomorrow is not certain", it sounds ancient language, but i like the motto
thanks so much! i think i like the italian version best.. actually the quote itself is from the Roman poet Virgil.. "Love conquers all things; let us too surrender to Love" I modified it a bit.
thanks again :)
Is there a word for "happiness" in Italian?
Happiness = Felicità
So if I got that tattooed on my wrist to remind me of all the the happiness the surrounds me, that would make sense? correct?
I think it does, if this for you have a sense, i mean, the word has the same sense either in english or italian, so if for you this tattoo has a sense, i does even in italian ;-)
Hey can someone pleaseee help me translate
live, love and be wild
id really appreciate it thnxx<3
how do you say 'my sacrifice to God' in italian?
I want a tattoo to read " Live Love Life", is the correct translation in Italian "vivere la vita l'amore" or "Viva la vita l‘amore" (or are they both incorrect)? I would really appriciate any help as i dont want my tattoo to be wrong. Thank you.
can someone help me translate this in italian..
"WE CANNOT LEARN WITHOUT PAIN"
thanks
Hi i am trying to get the right spelling for "What doesnt kill me make me stronger" I looked it up but just want to make sure its right this is what i came up with.."chu uccide il doesnt mi mi fa pluforte" If its right can somone let me know please?? Thanks Lindz
to Sheena: "live, love and be wild" is "Vivi, ama e sii selvaggio"
"sii" with two i it's the Italian meaning of "be" in that specific sentence.
to tony : "my sacrifice to God" --> "Il mio sacrificio a Dio"
to Kaycee : they are both incorrect! But I don't realy understand the meaning you would give to "Live love life". If you want to say: "live a life of love" the correct traduction in "Vivi una vita d'amore", if you want to say: "live and love your life" the traduction is "Vivi e ama la vita".
to hummingbird.2009: "WE CANNOT LEARN WITHOUT PAIN" --> "Non possiamo imparare senza soffrire"
to LiNDZ: that is an horrible translation! It isn't italian! it's a strange languange who they invented at the moment! xD
The right spelling for that is: "Quello che non mi uccide, mi rende più forte" or "Quello che non uccide, fortifica" if you want a shorter version, but the meaning it's the same!
Hey everyone! My MomMom who just passed a week ago was from Ovindili Italy & I want to get "Beautiful Love" in Italian in remembrance of her. I've seen several translations of it. Please let me know the correct way to word it ..Thanks ;)
Hey limitless thank you for the help I have a couple more to ask....
daddys little girl forever?

Can someone help me translate either:
Family is everything or family over everything? I want to see which sounds better for a tattoo. And any ideas where it should go? My first tattoo is a chainlink of hearts down the side of my right boob, I need it to go some where that it can't be seen in short sleeves or anything because I'm going to be an elementary school teacher. I also don't really want it to be someone where it could possibly be seen in my wedding dress (like on my back) I really want the tattoo...I'm afraid I can't handle the pain on the ribs, I've heard how horrible that it...Thanks for any suggestions!
Angela: "Beautiful Love" is
Bella Timao
"beatiful love" : "Bell'amore" or "Amore bello"
But I think that if you want a tatoo with Italian words or phrases don't search for the translation on the net, but try to find an Italian who can gives you the correct translation. A tatoo it's forever.
can someone help me find other word for this phrase "i will believe what i want to believe" thanks

hello,
limitless, can you please help me translate "somewhere, there's someone who dreams of your smile"?
thank you so much. you're so helpful!
priya > "da qualche parte c'è qualcuno che sogna il tuo sorriso", but i don't like it so much, maybe it sounds better "C'è un posto dove qualcuno sta sognando il tuo sorriso" (there's a place where someone's dreaming about your smile) ... let me know
Lindz > "Che noh mi uccide mi fa solo piu forte" spelling errors. Correct: "Ciò che non mi uccide mi rende più forte" that is "What doesn't kill me makes me stronger"
Giana > "live your life" > "vivi la tua vita". Or "vivi la vita", "live the life"
sg22 > blood brothers > fratelli di sangue
full blooded sicillian > forever grateful > per sempre riconoscente (sounds better in english)
Dana > "I want you forever in my arms" > (ti voglio) per sempre tra le mie braccia
"Daddys Little Girl" > Piccola di papà
"I wont give up on you", i think you mean "conterò per sempre su di te"
Mel > Yes
Bye

Singer-actress Lindsay Lohan has a fetish for tattoos and recently got the sixth one - a quote by Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe-inked on Lindsay Lohan on her left wrist. It reads "Everyone's a star and deserves the right to twinkle".
per quelli che amo, io mi sacrifico
is that
for those i love, i will sacrifice?
NEED ANSWERS ASAP
for those i love, i will sacrifice
literally is
per qulli che amo, mi sacrificherò
the one you wrote (per quelli che amo, io mi sacrifico) is "for those i love, i sacrifice"
I am looking for a tattoo and wanted 'One life live it' does anyone know what that is translated?

i just wanted to comment that in your quote: Quest' la vita e qui il gioire, un' ora di abbrezzo e poi moire -- This is life and this is joy: an hour of embracing and then to die. You spelled the word for "to die" wrong. I believe it is morire and not moire
:-)
