Tattoo Ideas: Lord of the Rings Elvish Script
71
J.R.R. Tolkien was a genius. What other author that lived in his day constructed an entire new language that he later included in each of his infamous books? Tolkien did have an advantage, however, having studied and created languages as a hobby for most of his life. The Elvish language that Tolkien created for the purpose of "Lord of the Rings" was primarily spoken by elves and fairies. It has several derivatives, particularly Quenya and Sindarin, which are the most advanced and the most popular.
The languages of Sindarin and Quenya are usually written in the Tengwar script, which Tolkien also created. The script that is on the "one ring to rule them all" worn by Elijah Wood throughout the movie as he journeys to destroy it in the fires of Mount Doom is actually written in the flowery scripted black speech of Mordor, which derived from Elvish. However, Elvish and other Middle-earth languages are also able to be written using the Latin alphabet if various accents are properly applied. When I saw "The Fellowship of the Ring" after reading the books, I became obsessed with getting an Elvish tattoo. Luckily, my girlfriend at the time and a friend of ours were equally as enamored, and after some extensive online research we were able to find an Elvish quote that means "The stars will shine on the hour of our meeting." We split the quote into thirds and each got part of it tattooed somewhere on our bodies.
The cast of the "Lord of the Rings" employed a similar technique. When filming wrapped, they decided to commemorate the year and a half they spent shooting in New Zealand in a unique way. Done by artist Roger Ingerton, the nine actors who comprised the fellowship of the ring decided to get a word done in Elvish script that symbolizes the number nine. John Rhys-Davies (who played Gimli the dwarf) was the only member who opted out of the activity due to personal reasons; so he sent his stunt double, Brett Beattie, in his place. Two of the four hobbits, Sean Astin and Billy Boyd, got the tattoo on their ankles to pay homage to the fake hairy feet they had to wear throughout the filming of the movie, a process which took over two hours to complete, while others simply tattooed the design on their upper arms.

' illume enyalie lye urva fir '
Also does anyone know where i can get that translated into elvish script?

There is a piece of software that you can download that will make translations into Elvish script. It has all the different "modes" of speech and also different fonts. You´ll have to look for it yourself though if you really want it. Hehe.
I used it to translate my tattoo that I have on my forearm. My tattoo is done in UV reactive ink, so it is invisible except under Ultra Violet/blacklight, where it glows white.
You can see a picture here:
I found the link to download the piece of software that will translate English into Tengwar.
It´s called Tengscribe and you can get it here:http://www.sci.fi/~alboin/tengwartutorial.htm
Im getting my tatoo in tengwar & ive tried downloading the various programs which convert eng to tengwar, but somehow they dont work! If anyone can help me translate Love,Live,Leave to Tengwar, as I need to give the letters to the artist, it would be much appreciated. mia77-77@hotmail.com
how would i translate 'life is a game worth playing'?
I have to say that I am glad that I am not the only one who finds the beauty in doing these tattoos.
Mine says: Elen sila lumenn omentilmo which means "A star shall shine on the hour of our meeting"
Its written on my wrist as the man I love has the shining star on his....
how do you write "sister" in elvish?
Wow, nice photos! I have an Elvish tattoo myself... it's around my wrist and says: "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us." It's my favorite "Lord of the Rings" quote, and I think also a good quote to live by.
I had mine written out by calligrapher Daniel Reeve (who did the calligraphy and map work in the "Lord of the Rings" films). He's such a nice guy, and he'll write out just about any quote in any script (and design just about any Middle-Earth inspired tattoo) for a small price. I highly recommend contacting him with any English-to-Elvish questions!
I having been trying to find Tengwar script for "William My Beloved" I want to get a tattoo and need it to give the artist. Please I need help. If you can write it please send it to me at my e-amil address jakepoobear@hotmail.com

Hi everyone i was wondering if anyone knew how to translate
Bright Promise
In elvish please it would mean a lot to me thanks!
can anyone tel me were i can get this translate into elvish script to be tattooed down my ribs. "you will always have my heart".
Please can someone help! i want three names translated into elvish to be tattooed. Sadie, Charlie, Sasha.
For everyone here. A lot of the sites will provide you a *literal* translation from English to Tengwar, but that is not elvish. Don't just translate using a site or you will look like a plonker.
Underneath all of Tolkiens "languages" was a grammar and a rationale. If you can't understand it yourself, please don't get it tattooed on your body. It's like getting Chinese or Japanese characters tattooed because it looks cool.
For a real understanding of what Tolkien is all about:
Galadriel: I amar prestar aen, han mathon ne nen, han mathon ne chae a han noston ned 'wilith.
Galadriel: 'The world is changed; I can feel it in the water, I can feel it in the earth, I can smell it in the air.'
I amar n. 'the world'.
prestar aen v. pass. 'is changed'; cf. presta- 'affect, trouble' (LR 380). David Salo explains it as aen 'they' and prestar '[they] change' in Elfling message no. 16323.
han pron. 'it'.
mathon v. pres. 'I feel'; cf. matha- 'feel, stroke, handle' (LR 371).
ne, ned prep. 'in, of'.
nen n. 'water'.
cae, mut. chae n. 'earth'.
a conj. 'and'.
noston v. 'I smell'; *nosta- 'smell'; cf. stem NUS-; Q nusta- 'smell'. In the official recording ennorously (?) nostron, from **nostra-?
'wilith n. 'air as a region'; usually ned 'in' triggers a stop mutation; if so it should be *ne gwilith 'in the air'. However David Salo writes: "I would not expect on historical grounds for *w to behave exactly like *g; since *w > gw is an instance of 'fortition' (change of approximant to stop) and *g > zero is the opposite, lenition. If we started with, say, *ed+wilith (or *wilitthe), then - assuming that the two words remain in contact throughout their development, then the fortition never gets a chance to take place. You would have e wilith instead of *ed wilith if the loss of the final consonant occurred, generally, before any other consonant" (David Salo, Elfling message from Jan 16, 2002).
Which directly affects what your tattoo will be. Choose with care.
Hi, I am wanting to get an elvish tattoo with a verse from a song from one of the movies. I think it is an elvish poem and is very beautiful. Could anyone translate this for me?
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come
To carry you home
And all will turn to silver glass
A light on the water
Grey ships pass
Into the West
Thanks,
Jordann
P.S. I would like the script version in bold italic. (I think...) (Like the one on the ring, but bolder)
:D
