Tattoo lettering refers to a particular type of tattoo that is becoming much more widespread nowadays. Tattoo lettering involves the inking of letters in a given script onto a person's skin as a tattoo. If you are considering getting a tattoo, first you should look through a catalogue of designs (called 'flashes' in the tattoo world) found here, and then continue reading to see what's important when considering a tattoo.

You can find a lot of tattoo designs and tattoo lettering designs here

There are a number of things that you need to consider before getting a tattoo that consists of tattoo lettering. The first, is the composition of the letter themselves. What words do you actually want the tattoo to consist of? Will they be in English, Spanish, Latin, Chinese, Hebrew... Or what? In and of itself this can be a complicated process. Characters in languages such as Chinese often have multiple symbolic meanings, especially when coupled together. It would be a good idea to have a friend fluent in that language look over the characters before they're inked on, to make sure they make sense. Then of course, you also need to consider what you're getting the tattoo for - is it symbolize your love and commitment to the love of your life? Is it to symbolize membership to a brotherhood of friends, or a cause you believe in?

Once you have decided upon the words that you would like to use, you then need to look at the presentation of the words themselves. Consider the color of the ink, the size of the characters and how much spacing is required. Also look at the font ("typeface") that will be used. Most professional tattoo artists will tell you that there is a minimal size of font required for tattoo lettering, mostly because over time as the tattoo 'fades' from absorption into the skin, the tattoo lettering will become unreadable if it is too small.

Remember not to limit yourself when it comes to tattoo lettering - after all, tattooing is an art form, and any expression or design can be considered art. With today's tattooing technology and computer-based tattoo flashes, almost any type of font face or design can be inked on as tattoo lettering.
