Tattoos in my Life

I have tattoos. This seems to be an ongoing theme in my life. Not the act of getting them, but the conversations that are about them. My tattoos are a bigger conversation starter than I am. I've always known that not everyone will appreciate my tattoos or even understand them, but that isn't the point of a tattoo in my eyes. I got both of my tats for me. I did research on where to go, where to place them on my body, and most importantly the care and the commitment one must have when deciding to get ink.

People are often shocked that I even have tattoos. I look like "such a nice girl." But why I ask, does a tattoo make me anything other than that, a nice girl? My tattoos aren't vulgar, hateful or disrespectful. So why all the hype? Because people still have this stigma that if you have a tattoo you are hard and ride a motorcycle and eat babies. Well, I don't do those things. I'm an average twenty-something girl who is expressing herself through ink. And no, I do not have a "tramp stamp" or a "band" around my arm. My tattoos are tasteful and easily hidden.

So the conversations are always centered on two things; what are my tattoos of and why did I get them in the first place. I'm not sure why people expect me to justify my actions. I don't ask them why they are eating Doritos when Fritos are clearly better. I just think it is hilarious that people demand for you to take off your clothes and show them your ink then to explain yourself as if you were a three year old that used crayons on the walls again. So I guess the moral of this rant is that people should be respectful to the tattooed community. We don't ask you what you personal questions like what your favorite sexual position is, so please, respect our privacy.

Your too funny, but I totally feel what your saying as a person with a fair amount of tattoos and as a person who is also guilty of the "tramp stamp" lol. I feel like this; unless your signing my check then don't worry about it. And if your are signing my check, I'm not violating any company policies so don't worry about it either.

Why not post pictures of your tattoos in a rant about your tattoos?

My tattoos are in very private areas, so pictures wouldn't be good. Good question though. Espeically since I am not ashamed of them. :)

I totally feel you. I had an elderly gentlemen tell me "I've branded a lot of cows but it's a shame to see a pretty lady like you branded". What do you say? lol I told him everyone my age has a tattoo or body piercing now even conservative people (I went to school to be a teacher and my friends did too).

Exactly. I just think its so interesting that people feel the need to comment. I don't comment on how poorly peoples table manners are. Why can they comment on something so obviously personal? Thanks everyone for posting on this Hub! I hope to hear more from all of you!

I can understand why people see tattoos in a negative light... maybe they expect "pretty" girls to be happy with their bodies as they are, not with art permanently inked on them. Maybe they like their "nice" girls so indecisive they shouldn't be bold enough to get something so permanent. Either way, I have a tattoo and I love it... just didn't love the price :(

I also have a tattoo & I find myself "explaining" it to people as well. It's as if they expect you to be regretful about it and when they realize you're not, they scoff. Oh well--we're happy & that's all that matters!
