Tax Attorney Information

A tax attorney is an attorney who works with clients on straightening out their tax problems. Everyone pays taxes, but not everyone requires the services of a tax attorney. Similarly, some people need an attorney to help them with taxes some years but not every single year. When, precisely, do people find themselves in need of a tax lawyer? Well, if individuals find themselves in a predicament with the IRS (the Internal Revenue Service) or with the state in which they reside and owe taxes, they could probably benefit from the services of a tax lawyer.

Tax law is very complicated, after all, and it also changes from year to year, so if you have any questions or concerns, you may want to talk with a tax accountant (at the very least), or perhaps more than one accountant. And if your accountant(s) suggest that you talk to a tax lawyer in addition to working with them, you may want to strongly consider heeding their advice. Granted, hiring a tax attorney will cost you some money, but think about it as an investment because if you can get your tax problems cleared up sooner rather than later, or if you can prevent tax problems from arising in the first place, then you may actually end up saving money in the long run.

How Tax Lawyers Can Help

In order to stay up to date in their professions, tax attorneys are constantly reviewing the tax law and the changes in the law. They understand the minutia of tax law in ways that the average taxpayer does not. If you are being audited, you might find that you are in even greater need of a tax attorney than usual. However, audits are not the only type of tax problem that tax lawyers can help their clients to resolve. They also help people deal with liens and fines and tax related debt. In addition, if you happen to be self employed or if you run your own business, you may have an even more complex array of current and/or potential tax issues. A tax attorney can help you sort out the particulars of your specific tax challenges.

An accountant is extremely useful for "crunching" your tax and income numbers, but chances are that an accountant who is not also a tax lawyer can not answer all of your tax law related questions, which is where a tax attorney can come into play. If you are self employed or you own your own small or middle sized business, a tax attorney can be particularly valuable to you even before you get audited or experience any type of tax problems at all. In fact, attorneys who specialize in tax law may be able to help you avoid getting audited at all or experiencing tax problems down the road. This means that you might want to hire a tax lawyer before you encounter any kind of IRS problems as a means of avoiding any such problems in the future.

Finding The Right Tax Lawyer

Finding the right tax attorney for you can take some time and research. If you are self employed and/or running a business and you have any family members or friends or business associates who have found a tax attorney who they like and who does excellent work for them, you might want to interview their attorney to see if you think the two of you could work well together.

You don’t have to make up your mind about a particular tax lawyer right away. And of course, you will want to find out what a particular tax attorney charges before you make the decision to hire him or her. Of course, you should also not feel obligated to hire the same tax lawyer that your friend or family member employs. But if someone that you know and trust likes and trusts a particular tax attorney, this typically bodes well for you, too.
