Get Your Kids Started
In my experience, each child responds differently and works at their own pace. This opinion has been developed after spending the last 6 to 8 months coaching my children to build their online businesses.
My daughter was off an running in November 2007, with a simple blog and a recipe Ebook. Since then she has done her market research, chosen her keywords and set up another site. To promote the site she blogs incessantly and works on forums..... there really is no stopping her.
My son wasn't as quick and didn't do quite as much, as quickly but he was very helpful, and still is, at helping me maintain my blogs, updating posts etc. As a result of this, he has now launched his own site and is considering what he wants to do next.
By letting them set they're own pace and coaching them along their path, my kids will be successful in their own right.
So are my kids any different to the kids next door? Well the incredibly messy rooms, forgetting to do their homework and not knowing what the term "clean up" means, shows me they are just like any other kid.
I've included a YouTube video of an interview I did with the kids talking about their businesses, to show just how normal they are!

What Can You Be Doing Right Now To Help Your Kids?
The best thing you can be doing right now is to give your children a sound financial education. This is not taught in Schools, the curriculum is alreay too full, and by the time our kids need to "understand money", it can be too late.
As Parents, we should be teaching and encouraging our children to take financial responsibility for their lives. Teach them how money works in the real world and what it means to them.
Then teach the Law of Attraction and The Law of Abundance and how to combine everything.
Don't understand? Neither did I, and I am definitely still learning. I started with my children when they were toddlers. When we went to the Shops, if they "whinged, whined and wanted", they got nothing. Good behaviour was often rewarded with a small treat that had a defined value of between $2 and $5, and we let them choose their own reward. If they wanted something more than the defined value, they couldn't have it. As very young children, they quickly came to understand that there is a finite thing you can do with money.
As they got older, we started paying them to do work around the house, and they had to split that money in half. Half was placed in a savings style bank account, the other half they could spend and we encouraged them to have "spending goals". My daughter decided she would save up for a new toy (about $50) and my son decided to save up for a new computer game. Again, this focussed their mind on the value of the money they were earning. If they wanted to spend money on something else, it would affect their ability to reach their goal sooner.
My husband and I then opened Retail stores and the kids were paid (even though they were young) for the assistance they gave in the operation of the stores. The same rules applied. Half their earnings were put immediately into their savings accounts, the other half into an account they can access on a daily basis.
Through all of this, we also taught our children "responisibility". We buy their new school uniforms every year and replace the bits that need replacing throughout the year. However, children being children, they loose items. One year I recall loosing 4 sun hats, 4 jumpers and a pair of school shoes. For a family on a tight budget (and we are), these costs can mount up. So, we told the children that if they lost an item of uniform, they had to pay to have it replaced. As the School has a strict uniform code, they have to replace it quickly too. The money to replace the uniform items comes straight out of their spending money.
Does this have an effect? Well, I think it does and it wasn't until earlier this year that I realised how much of an effect it has. At the start of School year, the only school trousers we could find for my son were black, not regulation navy blue. We purchased these, with the intent that we would get him the right colour "soon". He wore the trousers to School for 2 weeks and ended up with a "uniform penalty". Knowing that I was incredibly busy at that point in time, instead of coming home and whinging at me - he went straight to the uniform pool and used his own money to buy new trousers. When I found out, I went to transfer the money to his account - and he said no...... Talk about taking responsibility!
This is now a common occurence in our house.
Finally, teach your children about The Laws of Attraction and the Laws of Abundance.
The Law of Attraction simply says "Think that you will receive and you will". By teaching the children this simple mantra, their minds engage in a different way and they manifest behaviours that will indeed help them reach their desired goal. There is a metaphysical quality about The Law of Attraction, but there is also a very physical aspect to its implementation.
The Law of Abundance is different. With this one, we encourage the children to give a portion of what they earn to charity. Generally 10%. By doing this, we want the children to focus on how they can make the 10% larger, and by relationship the remaining 90% grows as well. There is a metaphysical aspect to this in the principle of "Give To Receive". With the Law of Abundance, we are teaching our children to Give Before Receiving and be responsible members of the community.
My son has also signed up for the Cash Smart Kids program - a coaching program that teaches children (specifically) how to be entrepreneurs and understand money better. He is reaping great benefits for this.
