It's traditional for young children to take Christmas gifts to their teachers on the last day of school before the Christmas holidays. This practice is common throughout the elementary and middle school years. Teacher gifts don't have to be expensive or extravagant to be meaningful. They're just a simple way to let your kids' teachers know that you appreciate the active role they are playing in your children's lives.

Food Gifts

Some of the most popular teacher gifts are food items. Gifts you're your own kitchen are special touch during the holidays. Home baked cookies, homemade candy, and decorative jars of winter drink mixes are thoughtful and affordable gift ideas that will be appreciated and enjoyed.

Packaged food gifts are also a great idea for teacher gifts. Since homemade food items are such a popular gift item, packaged cookie, cake, bread, and soup mixes are an excellent teacher gift idea. Homemade goodies will need to be eaten right away, but packaged goodies will keep until the lucky recipient is ready to use them.

If your teacher is a cooking enthusiast, high quality cooking oils or spices make excellent gift ideas. Tins of nuts, gourmet coffee, and high quality tea are also excellent choices for holiday gifts for teachers.

Be sure to keep in mind any special dietary needs of which you might be aware when selecting food gifts for your children's teachers. If your teacher is diabetic, a nice container of nuts is a better gift than a plate full of sugary candy.

Christmas Ornaments

Holiday ornaments are appropriate teacher gifts. You can purchase Christmas ornaments for gift giving, or share arts and crafts ornament that your children helped create. When giving hand crafted ornaments, it's a good idea to personalize them with your child's name and the year on the back of the ornament. Many teachers keep ornaments given to them by students for years, so this type of gift can be very meaningful and long lasting.

Gift Cards

Another popular gift idea for teachers is gift cards. When selecting gift cards, it's a good idea to choose practical options. For example, a $10 gift card for a restaurant where a good meal costs $50 isn't a good gift. A $10 gift card to a home improvement store, an office supply store, the best pizza delivery service in town, or the local movie theater, on the other hand, will come in handy for just about anyone.

It's the Thought That Counts

When selecting teacher gifts, remember that the monetary value isn't the most important consideration. It's the thought that counts. What better way to teach your children about saying thank you to important people in their lives than by encouraging the practice of giving teacher Christmas gifts each year?
