Cutting Corners

The curriculum vitae used to be a detailed component, constructed not to skip a beat for the records of professionalism. In that case, a wolf in sheep’s clothing could be detected like a scarecrow in a cornfield. Nowadays, send more than three pages of documented evidence of work and background history to a recruiter and your files should end up in the nearest garbage bin. A dog of a forty-five-year-old teacher’s age is certainly not a pup. Therefore, a mentor who's that mature must have a lot to say for himself that would take up more than just three legal size sheets of paper! In cutting their dossier down to size, the contemporary employers have handpicked fleeced coats for the wolves to hide their true characters. They get the opportunity to violate their victims in one school, and if caught, they don’t have to worry. They just need to change locations, abide by the 'don’t ask-don’t-tell' template, and as long as it’s not on their résumé, it never happened. Then when the new boss and co-workers think it is peace and safety, there’s sudden destruction. Some parents are left weeping and wailing and gnashing their teeth.

Perverted professors are playing the system to cause paranoia in the camp. Nobody knows who to trust anymore, and decent teachers are beginning to feel the heat. At one time, a teacher with common decency could innocently touch a student, since that was a sign of warmth and acceptance in using the psychology of transference. Nowadays, a student cringes on detecting the hand of his mentor coming too close. In physical education and coaching, for instance, contact between teacher and student is sometimes necessary. However, presently the adult has to toe the line, lest he might be slapped with a lawsuit plus immediate dismissal. The learning process has to be conducted in an atmosphere of trust and confidentiality. Where there is hostility and tension, students are inevitably placed at a disadvantage.

The low-graders parade like predators in the ocean, causing turbulence to create a kerfuffle. Then when everybody and everything is in a tizzy, these assailants still manage to ride the waves incognito. As said before, there are some good teachers that have a heart for the profession and they are usually, but not always from the old school. The bad ones are primarily those who see the job description as something to do, and do little if anything to acquire their status. They have nothing to lose and they envisage themselves doing something else ten or so years down the road. The veterans are the ones with a lot of investment in the profession and wouldn't risk putting their reputation on the line.

There are students who really make these predator professors' deviousness easier for these deceivers. Sometimes they are adolescents who are experiencing hormonal changes and are vulnerable to getting things confused by their feelings. Manny was a male teacher who taught at a technical school in one of the Caribbean islands. Like he told me, he lived on the campus of that boarding academy while he was in his mid twenties at the time. Marcia was a six-teen-year-old who had eyes for him, and was very forward with her feelings. It was in the wee hours of the morning that she found her way to his dormitory, knocking at his door. He opened up and before he knew what the deal was, his young student slipped right inside, closing the door behind her. The rest, of course, was history. As Manny confessed, that was how he got his first kid and the mother being one of his students - Marcia to be exact. What a shame!

It cannot be overstressed that many students can be very daunting and forthright with their emotions, and they can really put some teachers to the test. That is why proper screening should be carried out in hiring these professionals. Some students will say the nastiest things just to get what they want, but it takes much maturity from teachers to forego the temptation. Perhaps it's because I am not attracted to youngsters why I am able to view the tease from students with such distaste. However, there are teachers who have a weakness for younger people, and it is advisable for them to stay away from the classroom. They know themselves and need to do some soul-searching to establish in their minds that teaching is just not their calling. A male teacher with good looks is definitely going to be tested, and that's one thing that all teaching aspirants need to know before signing contracts. At some stage of the decadence, it used to be the male figures who cashed in on these weaknesses. However, recently females have been featuring among the foxes set to watch over the henhouses.

All teachers need to view things this way: whatever you send around, comes right around. The same student you abuse or neglect today might become the source of your nightmare tommorrow. "How is that going to happen?" you might ask. However, the leaf doesn't rot the same day it sinks to the bottom of the pond. The abused student might not be the one per se to deliver, but his deviant grandkid might become involved with your grandkid to teach you an invaluable lesson in your golden years. Or, you could be mugged at age ninety-two by a delinquent that can be traced back to a student from the past. It's a very small world!

In these times, the rectory and the classroom seemed locked in a distinct battle, as if to be vying for a spot in the Guiness Book of Records to write their names as wreaking the greatest havoc on juveniles in this century. Priests are putting their hands in little boys' pants, and the parents are not paying attention. And with good reasons too, for, who could believe that those offering pastoral care could be so depraved as to betray the subjects who are entrusted to them? It's in the news everyday and therefore needs no specifications. But adhering to the exhortation given above, those who can't stand the heat should not be in the kitchen.
