Managing finances is something that shouldn’t be restricted to just adults. If you want your children to respect and value money and use it wisely, it is important that you teach them how to manage it early on in life. Here are some suggestions on how to teach young children money management and the handling of finances.

Tips on Teaching Kids About Money Management

  • Set An Example

Children learn best by seeing what adults around them demonstrate. Therefore, if you would want your children to learn the value of money and develop good financial habits, it is important that you do the same. If they see you spending properly and living within your means, as well as saving, they, too, would learn to do the same and from an early age, develop a respect for the importance of money.

  • Encourage Children to Save

Even very young children can be taught to save by teaching them to put aside a little amount out of their allowance every month and use it, say, on their next birthday or any other special occasion. Make a ritual out of giving your children a piggy bank and then, having a competition for who is able to save the most or for the longest and so on.

You could even find out from your bank what savings options are available for children of various ages and encourage them to invest in them, or take them along to your next visit to the bank, showing them how it functions and what it does. Make it interesting rather than merely instructive and chances are they would enjoy putting aside money each month and see it build up over a period of time.

  • Inculcate Value for Money

By encouraging children to take on part-time jobs and work during holidays, you would be inculcating in them a value for money and the effort it requires to earn it. Once they know the amount of work it takes to earn money, they would think long and hard before spending it needlessly and on things they don’t really require. Also, involve them when you receive bank and credit card statements, letting them know how your finances stand, without being ominous. This would enable them to see money in a different light rather than just as a spending medium.

  • Teach Children About Credit

It would also, be a good idea to teach children about mortgages and credit cards. Depending on their age, explain how these instruments work, the rates of interest and when is it actually wise to use a credit card. For this, you may have to do some reading up as well, especially, if you aren’t the financial types. Or you may want to get a friend or a partner who is good with money to explain this to all of you. Sometimes, children understand better when it is someone other than their parents explaining things.

  • Show Them How to Spend Money Wisely

Take your children with you when you go shopping for groceries and other items. Let them see you look around for the best deals and make wise choices. Demonstrate when it is important to buy quality stuff, even if it costs more and when is it alright to go for lower costs and average quality. By teaching them to spend wisely, you would be developing in them not just the ability to manage money but also, the gift of being a smart shopper.

At the end of the day, what matters most is how you demonstrate respect for money and prudence in managing your finances. Children would imbibe the right values if they can see everyone in the family displaying the same principles and rules regarding money. Most importantly, by using these simple suggestions, you would be able to start a tradition of creating a family that values money in the right spirit and uses it wisely.
