Apples to Apples Is a Family Treat

Which is crunchier? Christmas, Charlie Brown, a book or jello?

In Apples to Apples: Kids edition, parents and kids alike each get a chance to pick the best matches between adjectives and nouns. Fast paced, and easy to play, kids learn the meanings of new words, practice their reading skills, and use logic to try and decide which answer is the best.

Each person takes turns being the judge. The judge plays an adjective card. All the other players then offer a noun card from their hands to the judge, face-down. The judge then has to decide which noun card best fits the adjective.

It's not always an easy choice. And sometimes the matches are silly, or downright bizarre. But the judge has to pick something, even if it's not a perfect match.

This game is great for kids just learning to read, as a way to boost their confidence and have fun at the same time. It's also good for kids who know how to read, but are still learning basic vocabulary.

And parents have a lot of fun with this game too, as it's not at all guaranteed who is going to win. A lot has to do with luck, and subjective decisions of the judges.

The kids version targets children just learning to read through age 10. The Jr. version has slighly harder vocabulary and more obscure characters, and is intended for ages 9 and up. The adult version has high school level vocabulary, with references to a wider variety of famous people, such as Marie Curie and Bob Hope.

All cards list synonymns for both the adjectives and the nouns, in case someone is not familiar with the word.

Apples to Apples is one of our favorite games. For over a year we've come back to it again and again to play together as a family.

Apples to Apples gets five stars from us. We hope you'll enjoy the game too.
