Why do teens get pregnant? Or rather, the question is, why is it happening so much more?

Is it made too popular by modern media? Is it made to look sexy, fun, and romantic?

Sexual content on TV is powerfully associated with teen pregnancy, a recent study by the Rand Corporation has revealed.

About 2,000 teens aged 12 to 17 were questioned, and they were asked about 23 programs  with sexual subject-matter that are popular with adolescents.

Teens with a high exposure to shows of this kind were twice as likely to get pregnant or cause a pregnancy.

"We know that if a child is watching more than an hour of TV a day, we know there's a sexual scene in [the] content every 10 minutes, then they're getting a fair amount of sexual content," said Anita Chandra, the study's lead author.

Teens  living in a two-parent family had a lower chance of being pregnant or causing a pregnancy. The study also revealed that African-American girls and children with behavioral difficulties  had a higher probability. The link between televised sex and teen pregnancy was valid even if other factors such as demographics and risk-taking behaviors were taken into account.

According to experts  TV shows seldom  portray the risks of sex and often don't mention methods of contraception. But previous research from Rand has shown that content which includes the negative consequences such as sexual  diseases and undesired  pregnancies could be a way to enlighten teens.

One parent who was interviewed seemed  to agree with the conclusions of the study, but another parent believes teen pregnancy has more to do with how parents bring up  their children. Chandra said a central message from the study is that there needs to be more dialogue about sex in the media and in particular  between parents and their children.
