The translation of 'Tel Aviv' from the Hebrew is "Hill of Spring".

The city was nonexistent before 1909, being just sand dunes in the desert, when some residents of Jaffa Israel wanted to leave Jaffa because of the high Arab population there, and they wished to begin construction of a city that would echo a European type city of suburbs and wide streets. The name for the new city they borrowed from the great Zionist Herzel who wrote about such a place in his The Old New Land which was the inspiration for many Zionists in the early days of the founding of the state of Israel.

Tel Aviv today is a buzzing metropolis of one million persons in this city that lies along the Mediterranean coast, making it a popular destination for beach-lovers. The area itself is collectively referred to as 'Gush Dan'.

Called "the city that doesn't stop" Tel Aviv never turns off the lights--having a nightlife of bars and clubs and partying people can be seen doing their thing around the clock. It is truly the secular capital of Isreal, whereas Jerusalem might be called the 'religious capital'.

Tel Aviv has also been called 'the white city' owing to the Bauhaus architectural style, which is unique and very aestetically pleasing.
