By Hello, hello,

Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922) born in Edinburgh, Scotland and a US scientist.

Alexander Graham Bell patenting the telephone in 1876. Within a decade of patenting there were almost 200,000 units in use worldwide.

Unfortunately, to be begin with the telephone was not very powerful to be used over long distances. The receiving call became very faint after only a few hundred miles. This problem was dealt with installation of a series of repeaters or amplifiers. The improved system than made it possible to have telephone calls over long distances and even transcontinental calls.

In 1940 a new technique was used. Long distance transmission was on micro-wave or high-frequency radio, links, rather than cables.

In 1960 a new technique was developed and calls between continents were transmitted by micro-wave and orbiting satellites. The electric cable were replaced by optical fibres which transmit digitised pulses of light.
