TELL NO ONE

It was getting late and he knew it. He had been walking for two long hours and his mind and body began to wear. He could feel the chilling winter breeze brush over him . . . clinging to him . . . and it seemed he was getting nowhere. He was starving and had no food. Suddenly . . . he heard a faint voice in the distance, but he couldn’t make out the broken words. He began to run. His heart began to race, his mind went blank. He heard the voice again, this time it was louder. He began to hear footsteps, and they were getting closer. Still it felt as though he was getting no place. And then, suddenly he heard a screeching, loud, crashing BANG! What do you think happened next? Did the man live to tell about his experience? What really happened this strange dark and frigid winter night? Take a moment and reflect on this. In the space bellow write what you think really happened based on the scene just described.

Now I’ll tell you what really happened. His 5 year old daughter busted through the door – “Dad . . . Dad . . . dinner’s ready. I told you three times. Don’t you hear anymore? You’ve been on that stupid treadmill all day and this time mom’s really mad. And why is that window open?”

What did you believe really happened? I bet it was a lot different than what really happened wasn’t it?

Beliefs are like that. Once we except a belief it gives are brains an unquestioned command to respond in a certain way.

What is this thing we call belief? Many times we talk about something without fully understanding it. Many people consider a belief something real, when really it’s just a level of certainty you have about something. If you believe you are attractive, what you’re really saying is, “I’m confident” that I’m attractive. That absolute certainty helps you carry yourself in a confident way that radiates attractiveness.

An easy way to understand a belief is to break it down into its basic building block, an idea. We all have a lot of ideas that aren’t really beliefs. Let’s take for instance the idea that you are generous. Now pause for a moment and say out loud, “I’m generous.” How did you feel when you said it? Did it feel right when you said it? Did you feel you were accurately describing yourself? If the answer is no, then you lack the sense of certainty that you’re generous.

How does an idea become a belief? Here’s a simple metaphor to explain the process: Picture a tree with one or two roots. Then you can see why an idea isn’t as strong as a belief. Without enough roots, the tree will fall. A belief, however, is a tree with enough strong roots. If you wholeheartedly believe you are generous, how do you know for sure? - Because you have the references to strengthen your idea. These roots make your tree solid. Now you have a belief.

Right now, think of some references that make you feel certain you are generous. Maybe you have offered assistance to many people in need. Maybe you give a great deal of your time or money to your family, friends, or community. But realize none of these references mean anything until you use them to strengthen the idea that you’re generous. When you do, the more roots (references) you have, the stronger your idea becomes, growing into a belief.

Now that we understand how beliefs are like trees, we can see how they develop and get a clue with enough roots to strengthen ideas. If you think about it, haven’t you had enough rotten experiences in your life that you could form enough roots to establish the belief that this planet is an awful place to live? I’m sure you could if you tried. Isn’t it also true that if you wanted to, you could just as easily form the belief that this planet we live on is a marvelous wonder? Once again I’m sure you could. The question then is, “Which one is it?” Is the world a rotten place to live or a marvelous wonder? It depends on whichever belief you assemble. The point is then to form beliefs that empower you. Thanks for stopping by again. I hope this article on beliefs was insightful and entertaining.
