How to be a renaissance (wo)man
I find that I like the company of people who know more than I do, and useful things, for that matter. In my mind, this explains the "opposites attract" principle.
Nobody wants to be surrounded by "Yes men" (someone who will constantly tell you that you're right). What people want is to be able to debate and be challenged. This is the only way to learn. To surround yourself with new ideas helps you to grow into a more intelligent human being.
I can't imagine what it would be like if all I heard all day was "that is so true!" or "you said it best".
Here are some tips to making friends, being social and intelligent:
- Keep learning: Read books, read articles, watch the news, just look for things to stimulate your mind. Never top learning. This will help you to have something to talk about when you encounter new people. This will help you when you are trying to get someone to like you too, because they will be impressed that you have something more than air in your head. The after-school programs were right when they told you to "STay in school!". School is a great way to learn new things. You might also want to try joining social groups like a debate society or a book club. These are great ways to share ideas and learn new things to talk about on any given day.
- Form your own ideas: Don't be afraid to tell someone they are wrong or that you disagree. Even if you want the person to like you. Chances are they will respect you for it. Always say what's on your mind (well, not your private thoughts, but those thoughts that are safe to share). Be bold, confident and courageous!
- Share your ideas: Speak in an open forum, recite your poem at a poetry slam, publish a book, sell your paintings. You creativity is nothing until it is shared. Otherwise it is just garbage collecting dust. Get out there and share a piece of yourself. Even if it is to get a blog, you can upload your artwork onto the world wide web and get opinions on it (which is a good way to learn) or even make money from it! Not only that, but people will see that you are serious about what you believe in and will respect you for it.
These are just some tips on how to be a renessaince man or woman in our modern society. I hope this helps you to see that you are more than a bag of bones. You can be something great!

Dutch84 I thought that quote from article said it all.I agree and I think the current economic climate will bring about this shift to the more beautiful things in this world that are free. Here's to more people digging through their trash/storage and finding out it really was a treasure. This was a good read and thank you.
