Many models of binoculars are available for a wide range of activities including birding, hunting, sports, and general outdoor activities. The best binoculars for any of these should revolve around binocular optics.
Many models of binoculars are available for a wide range of activities including birding, hunting, sports, and general outdoor activities. The best binoculars for any of these should revolve around binocular optics.

Binocular Optics

The best binoculars for your viewing pleasure is obviously a personal choice, but consider a few ideas before going on that lavish shopping spree. Shopping for a quality pair of binoculars can be like looking for a new camera. With so many models and such a price range to choose from, the experience can be a bit daunting.

There are several ways to help narrow your search, in turn making your options a narrow field. First and foremost, consider the binocular optics. Whether your binoculars are for bird watching, hunting, sporting events, marine use, or just for general purposes, binocular optics are your best friend. This feature, more than any other, will determine the pleasure or misery of your viewing.

Second, a direct relation to the first, is price. What is your budget? This is tricky, because nowhere is this limitation more apparent than in the world of binoculars or any other product using optics as their primary function. For some, money is no object. This is a good motto when considering optics purchases, whether for binoculars, spotting scopes, telescopes, or cameras. When shopping for a cause such as new binoculars, separate the budget from your options and purchase the best glass you can afford. You’ll be glad you did.

Compact Optics

Third on the factor list is the power of the binoculars along with their size. Today, compact optics does not mean loss of quality. In fact, some of the best binoculars on the market can easily fit in the palm of your hand. This is great news for those times when binoculars may be hanging around your neck for a couple of hours. Less weight around the neck translates into less neck fatigue.

The power of your binoculars is determined by a couple of numbers you’ll see. For example, 10x25 roughly translates into the subject being viewed will appear 10 times closer than viewing the subject without binoculars. The second number represents the aperture and helps determine how well the binoculars work in low light conditions. The higher the aperture number, the less favorable the model is for low light.

Carl Zeiss Optical

Prominent on the list of great binoculars is the name Zeiss.  There’s a reason why.  Zeiss optics have long been associated with the highest quality glass in precision optics.  Founded in 1846, Carl Zeiss AG has been at the center of precision glass since its inception.  Jena, Germany was first home to Zeiss optics.  It’s no coincidence that Jena was also the largest location in the world for camera production prior to World War II.

I have a Fujinon 7x50 which is quite good. My only regret is not getting the integral compass option which is useful for boat navigation.

hi ralph,

there are so many great binoculars on the market, it's very difficult to pick ten. friends and family members offered input, making it even more difficult. i probably slighted the marine audience by omitted some good marine binoculars. not intentionally, as i spend so little time on the water.
