Ten Online Writing Sites You Might Have Missed
93
If you are a Hub Pages addict like I am, the last thing you probably need or want is yet another place to write for ad revenue, so don't worry, I'm not going to saddle you with ten more of those kinds of web sites.
I will saddle you with a few of those kinds of web sites, and fill in with some other great resources that can get you work, get you noticed, hone your skills, or help you make contact with other writers who share your interests.
My feeling is, there's no such thing as too many resources.
So here, without any more blah blah blah from me, are ten online writing resources you might have missed:
- WritersDigest.com. Writers Digest started out as a print publication aimed at creative writers and people who submit articles to paper magazines. They feature articles about how to write, how to get an agent, and all those kinds of writerly topics, but they also regularly include calls for submissions (paper and online publications that are looking for new writers) and they list writing contests (some have an entrance fee, some don't). Right now they are featuring an article (with hot links) on the 101 Best Websites for Writers, so if you're looking for new places to sell your stuff and make money, you can blow a couple hours browsing all your choices in that one article alone.
- Poets & Writers. Poets & Writers is another print publication whose online version (www.pw.org) is every bit as good as the paper magazine. I'm partial to Poets & Writers because the quality of the articles about writing is much better than Writers Digest, and tone of the whole thing is just a little more upscale. You'll find interviews with successful writers and poets from all genres, advice, agents, and lots of new markets, writing contests, and calls for submissions.
- WritersWeekly.com. Lots of solid information on publishing on demand, online markets, agents and so on in a slightly cheesy format, which for some reason, is extremely typical of many of these writing sites. Apparently, not all writers are web designers too.
- Journalismjobs.com. Tired of trolling the net for clients who balk at a penny a word? Sick of working 20 hours a day to build "passive revenue"? If you think you might like to try for a job type job, as in forty hours a week, health plan, 401k, annoying boss; then this is the place to look. Jobs are broken down into ten different categories including film, television, and online media.
- Bukisa.com. Bukisa is a revenue sharing site much like Hub Pages. The user interface isn't bad, and while you don't really meet the people you do on Hub Pages, the revenue is comparable and they are constantly adjusting it. One nice thing about Bukisa is that the payout threshold is only $10, so you don't have to write for a year to make a little money.
- Examiner.com. The Examiner started out as a San Francisco newspaper and is currently hiring writers for its online venue. To write for The Examiner you have to fill out a template which includes a brief (250-300 word) writing sample and an explanation of what you will do for them. They hire writers by region, so you have to give your stuff a regional slant (I write for the Grand Rapids MI area), and you have to pick a topic (I write paranormal stuff). They have a specific format that isn't hard to nail down, and they pay through revenue sharing, like Hub Pages. If you decide to try it and you get in they'll pay me $50, so if you say I sent you I won't be sad. I just started myself, so I can't say I'm raking it in, but I'm having fun and the articles are short so its easy to write them.
- Freelance Zone. Freelance Zone is a blog that features lots of good advice about what not to do and what to cultivate if you are trying to make your living grubbing for word bucks. So many people are doing this now that the competition is really fierce. Freelance Zone is a kind of a water cooler web space to kick around and read about your issues.
- Freelancewriting.com. This is another one of those uber-job-board type sites, with links to jobs from lots of other sites. You can spend a lot of time here and get overwhelmed pretty quickly, but every so often you do hit on something good if you keep at it.
- Demand Studios. Demand Studios subcontracts freelance work to online writers. You have to apply to write for them, just like you apply for a regular job. If you get in, they pay you per article, but you don't have the bennies of a real job, (natch). Why would you want to do that? Because the freelance job boards are getting crazy wild competitive and its one way to make sure you get at least $10 an article or so.
- Freelancewritinggigs.com. Another general site for online freelancers, offering business advice, job leads, tip and tricks, and so on.
With the global recession starting to hit harder and harder in more and more places, more and more people are trying to write for money online. It's not that easy and the competition is insane right now. Having lots of resources and staying on top of new trends can help you to become one of the few people who actually get work.
In all honesty, I do think there's an outer limit to all this writing online insanity. I mean, everybody can't make money writing online. It's really, really hard to do, folks. But some people are indeed doing it, and you might be one of them.
You never know until you try.
Good luck!

Thanks for the useful list PG - bukisa and theexaminer look interesting (provided they take people in the UK)
great suggestion hub for everyone.
Singular Investor - I don't know about theexaminer, but Bukisa accepts people from any country.
This is so useful, thank you very much for putting in the effort to put this list together.
I am going RSS you. I do not want to miss any of your articles. I have a suggestion for such reviews.
Please do include the vital information about acceptance of 'only USA/UK/Australian writers' and 'international writers' where applicable, in your reviews
Thanks
very useful information. But if you write for one, would some one be angry. One of articles which was published by 10 travel magazines, was uploaded on www.hubpages.comIt has gone up from 50 marks and is labeled "duplicate" while many hubs, even un-published, cross 65 marks because of contents.
Very useful research, thank you. Of course as hafeezrm points out to post in multiple places requires a little editing and title changing, just to make it unique. But otherwise why not.
Wow, thank you, doing the research, sharing the particulars. I for one appreciate all of this information. Writing for a living has always been an interesting niche and on line access has changed the face of how it is done. Awesome, useful hub, as always thanks!
PG, great hub as always and thanks for the amazing amount of research you did on this project---I applaud U!
Thanks for that. Most are new to me but I have a mind to check a couple out.
Hi everyone--Glad you found this useful. I notice lots more people are online trying to earn money so I thought I'd start writing more of these. Good luck!
Thanks for all of the info, PG. Looks like I'll be busy surfing for the next hour or so! :)
Have fun lrohner! (I should do that myself, actually.)
:)
Thanks, pam. You're a gem.
PG - I have a question about Bukisa - how long does an article have to be and do you get enough visitors to actually make any money ?
pgrundy, thanks for sharing the info. I will be checking out a few of these sites as I am hoping to break in on the freelance market.
Thanks a million. As usual rated up...
Thanks for this, Pam. A great resource!
Thanks everyone,
Bukisa is just like Hub pages in that regard. It all depends on how much traffic and how many ad clicks the article gets.
Thanks for these great sites. You are so right there are so many sites and places out there where they expect you to write for pennies. Quality writing has a place and there are those who want it. Thanks for the leg work!
Thanks for the info! :D
Great info, Pam. I love writersweekly, especially when they champion for a writer who hasn't been paid. I actually trust their links.
Demand Studio, I can't write for because I'm Canadian.
There is one on your list that I wasn't aware of - Freelance Zone. I'm going to check it out, it sounds like a good 'gathering of the minds' place.
Thanks for this, Pam.
Great advice.
Hello PGrundy- I am very happy (and I know almost every hubber is) for the list of sites you carefully put together that would help us get more vehicles for our passion for writing. I especially would like to try writer's digest and the pw.com to hone other genre as poetry. For journalismjobs, I might try that and check out and maybe I can share to you what happens later. Bukisa and Examiner seem to sound good stuff too, and believe you, me- I shall especially mention your name to examiner - the first person who introduced me to these cool sites. Thank you for being there for us- hot, cool, just hanging out, brand-new hubbers. You are active and are very visible....That's a real "hubber."
Great information -- thanks for putting it all together for us. I've always used Poets & Writers, which I enjoy. Since reading this, though, I've applied to DemandStudios, to see what that brings in.
Every penny counts!
Oh man, My bookmark list is growing out of control-- much of it to the fault or credit of pgrundy. You give out a lot of good stuff.
I have registered with Bukisa but haven't written there. I better get going...
Excellent hub as usual.
Ooh - forgot to mention -- I applied at examiner.com, too, and so I hope they accept me -- if so, the coffee's on you!
Thanks, Pam, for the list. Most of the time, I'm a lot exhausted from work so that I have a hard time just getting some hubs up. But I haven't heard of many of these, so good to know for the future, perhaps. I've always used Poets & Writers. Even had a job interview at the magazine once! Dern, that poetry stuff shur don't pay much, tho! ;)
Cool, I scan through your article. I heard of a few of the websites you listed. Thank you for the interesting list.
I will like to read more of your articles.
By Queendenise35
Pam you own the front page of (hot) hubs - you have 5 of the 10 slots you go girl! Demand studios is not open to non-US based writers. BTW I use textbroker.com as a purchaser - again its only open to US-based writers - and its not a bidding site the buyer sets the rate - they seem professional and sometimes it takes days for my articles to find a writer so there may be a bit of opportunity for US writers there
Wow thank you for all your comments!
We went out yesterday looking for a sofa so I didn't check my comments all day, so this morning I got up to 70 emails. I about fainted. Thank you everyone!
Teresa, SimplyRaRe--Good luck at Examiner! So far I like it fine there--not as much fun as HP but the revenue seems comparable if not a bit better and the payout is lower. Thanks for the referral! :)
Uninvited writer--I like Bukisa. I don't as much there as I should. I started with the intention of doing just movie reviews there but I'm an HP junkie now.
Lissie--Thanks for the info and sorry about Demand Studios. In the future I will have to be more careful to check about the outside-the-US thing. I haven't tried any article directories yet but I should. You said you've had some luck with them--I've had a dry couple of weeks at the freelance boards but meanwhile I have seen an uptick in my 'passive' (lol!) revenue. It's so tough right now.
Lita--That is so awesome that you had an interview at P&W. I am incredibly impressed, seriously. I've been thinking of trying some contests but haven't done it. I don't much want to pay a reader's fee, but there are a few that don't charge one.
AshleyJoy, Shirley, Queendenise35, Rochelle, and lindagoffigan--Thank you for commenting! :)
I, for one, would be lost without you. You set standards and consistently offer fine examples. I know you're earning a living, but there's a bit of teacher in you too, I think. Thank you.
Thank you Linda, that was really nice of you to say that. :)
great information thanks !
You read my mind... I'm new to this online and was getting a little disouraged, but thank you so much for posting this!!
Anyone know where I can write controversial religious/spiritual articles and get paid a little? Or have I missed that somewhere in the above comments? Thanks much.
www.spiritfeast.blogspot.com
PG,
Thank you for this excellent list
This is an excellent list.
pattimari
Thanks for the information, I'm so glad I found you all on the web. I have never met so many helpful people in one place before. thanks again.
This is a good list. Funny how I haven't thought of checking out Writers Digest.com since I'm so familiar with the print version from years past. Interesting to know you write for the Examiner.
How about Suite101.com? Has anyone written for that site?
Hi! I write for BUKISA, too. Like you said, earning is instantaneous with them, though it comes in cents. :)
Hi everyone,
Thanks for your comments. I know there are some HP who write for Suite101, but I haven't tried that so I can't really say how that goes. But that's another possibility out there--I believe they also have a lower payout threshold. :)
Great job, Pam. I've bookmarked this page so as to come back to shop a couple of these recommended places. Ha! You do all the sowing and we reap the rewards! Great job as always.
Hi dohn121--Thanks for coming by! Good luck on the writing! :)
Bookmarked! Great work Pam! Thank you so much.
Great sites..
Great Job Pam! Thanks for all the resources.
Thanks Pam. I like Bukisa as well, the payout is quick, and just a few articles garnishes payout for me every month. : ) Demand studios I tried but didnt put enough energy into it. Ill go at it again though. :)
Oh...lol...Pam.. Just came by to say do NOT be too impressed with Poets & Writers. That's grant funded, you know. They were offering a salary I think, of $20,000 or something for 30 hrs. in NYC. It's all sooo much smaller than people think when you get there. And yep, maybe I should compile a list of publications that accept poetry w/o reading fees w/ a pay off. There are some out there...I've spent some time siphoning thru it all...
Lita--Hi! I've applied for jobs like that in the past, only in social services. I get all dressed up, get interview by a panel of people and find out at the end the job pays 15-20K and I'm up against 12 other people with PhDs. LOL! Good luck with the contests, I think I will do the same. Hey, that would be a good hub too. :)
I think if u r telling about freelance , the best site is odesk
Great Info Thank you
Great information. Thank you for sharing!!! :)
This is a really good list of resources. Useful to have a few, since I'm in the UK and some (like Demand Studios) won't accept non-US citizens.
Good list of resources!
Wow! Great information-thanks for the great article. I freelance on The Examiner as well. associatedcontent.com is another good site. Also check out elance.com and textbroker.com. I work on all of these sites, but am going to check out some you suggested as well.
Hi,
Ur write-up is really very informative.Thank u very much for ur effort!
Wow..what information..thanks for the research
Thats some neat info, I'm off to check out the first site now :) Thx a ton !
Thanks so much for the helpful list of sites. I will definitely check them all out! :)
Thanks for sharing us this nice stuff. A great blog again and I think I have to try the sites myself.
A great resource HUB. I was not familiar with many of the sites. Thanks for putting it all together for us. I will be checking them out. Thanks!
thanks for the tips and resource list. I knew some, but not all of them.
Wow! Thank you for doing the work and finding this information and then doing the work again and sharing this information.
Between your list and some of the additional comments, I have my work cut out for me checking them out. But I'm NOT complaining. That's a GOOD thing.
I'm off to surf. thanks again
Hi, great information! I don't know if you know about ehow.com? It is a how to site obviously...lol but can bring in great income using SEO and tips for the other users. The top writer I believe is making over $1000/mth
Thank you for this great information. I bookmarked this site. I'm new here and you seem to be quite popular. Goodlooking too I might add. Thank you.
Thanks for your comments everyone! :)
Lady CEo--I have an ehow account but I've only written one article. So far I think one or two people have read it. lol! But I know other people here at HP who do very well there. Thanks for the suggestion!
These resources are wonderful. I am a Ph D. student and will want to know how to publish my work. These might be very useful. Thank you.
Thanks very much. I will check them out!
Pam, I always know I'm going to read some quality information from one of your hubs! What a great resource for online writers. Always glad to be a fan, Steph
thanks man, nice info..
ok this is not a scam and you do get paid just for clicking on Google site links it is free you dont buy anything you get paid for clicks $25 every click and you dont need to sign up for anything the only down side is you wait to get a check and you have to be on the internet alot but the more you click the more you get paid and you can e-mail me at gooogleadminrick@gmail.com and this is real this site link will tell you how http://sites.google.com/site/paidtoclickadsnow/
Greetings PGrundy - Excellent list of writing resources! The Hub community is unequaled in providing support to one another, and I love the way writers don't mind sharing the work. I was surprised that you didn't mention Constant Content (My recent find that has turned out to be a Godsend for me), then I saw that you only posted the ones you actually had experience with, which I think is a nice touch.
Since you obviously don't mind diversity (me either), here is a link you can check out and I know you will want to add to your list. Writers can actually select a writing assignment from a list of content that paying customers have requested. Pay ranges from $10 - as high as $150 and the thresh hold to get paid is only $10. Check it out and see what you think.
You must feel really great, knowing you've been able to sincerely help so many people with this hub! Thanks again, and keep up the good work.
There you go again making my life THAT much easier! Well done you. Oh, and, um, THANKS!
Thank you for sharing this list. I will try to join on some of these sites.
Thank you everyone for commenting!
Charm Baker--Thank you for that link. I will indeed check it out. I appreciate it muchly! :)
Thanks for this post. I've been looking for these sites :)
wow, although I have found out about most of those websites through my own research some of those are new to me :)
Thank you so much for sharing this list with us. Great hub, I am looking forward to viewing more of your hubs.
Great hub - thanks for compiling this resource! I'm bookmarking it!
Great information for a freelance writer/elearning specialist like myself. I'm going to checkout Demand Studios asap. Thanks again. Michele
Great article, very informative Thank you!

Greetings - Thanks again for such an informative hub. I came back to grab your link so I can link to this page. I know my readers will be interested in these sources for more paid writing ideals. ttfn - ta ta for now
Superb superb superb article.
You are creative with your ideas!
Thanks for writing this hub. I found a site I'm going to join.
Thanks for that article Pam. I read it all the way through, so it was good information. I have bookmarked it for my reference... on the other hand, based on your comments in the comments section... I think you have talked me out of freelancing online. It sounds like a lot of work for very little pay.
Hello;
I find your hub very enlightening. Maybe you can help me out if you can. I am writting -well- I am almost finished writting an extremely provocative book. Its called Elvil Alchemy and the Hidden Code of the Secret Platinum. You can find a quick purvues of it in Hubpages, under my real name Tien Kai. Please, tell me what you think or if you ahve any suggestions.
Thanks so much. I've only ever heard of about three of those listed!
Thank you so much for writing about the other writing websites. I will have to check them out. Your hub was very informative. Again thank you.
Thanks for the list. It is very informative and always a nice list to have, in case one got some spare time to write on more than 2-3 sites :)
That's a good list you have. I joined Bukisa and Infobarrel but have not written any so far. Maybe when i complete 300 hubs with HubPages i will become active there as well.
A couple I didn't know about. Thanks.
Great list but im still gonna stick with hubpages im addicted lol!
Thank you for this informative hub! I love your hubs! :)
Lots of great sites. I've seen some of them but will be visiting the new ones...
nice hub cool sites too!
cool hub, i'm checking out #4 right now; oh and Bukisa definitely pays!
Thanks for the helpful list!
thanks for sharing this info. I would like to add one more that I use along with hubpages writing.com,
I enjoy writing and it seems every writer on the hubpages.
I wanted to thank you for your article. I'm just starting out on Hub Pages and as a writer. It's a real encouragement to find articles with these kind of needed tips.
Thanks for being a help to me (and I'm sure others),
Gloria Cowdery
nice information, i like test few of them.
Thanks for your wonderfully helpful articles. I tried out one of them the other day and I've been flooded with work!
Awesome, can't wait to check them out (who needs sleep anyway!!)
I just added several of these to my "fav places" that I will have to check out. I have been using WritersDigest.com for a while but didn't know about the others. Thanks for all those sites!
Ahh but can you get backlinks to your website if it's a place where you can post them? Thats a huge plus with Hubpages for sure!
This a great hub which will be useful for many people who want to make money online writing. Thank you very much for this great work.
Thanks for the other writing sites. If I have time, I will check them out.
Best,
Nate
Always looking for ways to make money. Great info. Thanks
Great article, I've been looking for a few sites like these.
Amazing resources, thanks for sharing. I did a hub myself on sites that help you make money online, and the only one I knew here was demand studios. Goes to show just how much of the iceberg I have explored.
Great list--yet another one for me to store away until I have time to try a new writing site out. My plate is full at the moment.
Hi there, I'm glad I stumpled upon this hub of yours. It is very interesting and helpfull. I did not know any of those sites you mentioned, which means one more lesson to put in my head. :)
One of the things I've realized is that it is very hard to start out as a freelance writer, as much as internet has made it a bit easier. I mean, it seems to me that once you've got your first assignments, it is a lot easier to continue and be successfull. Than again, it might be like that in almost everything in life, but when it comes to this subject i really find it very hard to start out, even if to just gather some clips to build your profile.
Anyhow... thank you again for the information shared in this hub. Take care.
Wow thank you so much for this helpful information. I am definitely going to try some, if not all of these sites. Thanks so much.
Thanks for all the info about these sites I love hubpages. I will be writing more here and then check out the other places. Thanks!
Nice article. I saw your hub to fan ratio and I am impressed. Also impressed that you have been on hubpages for 2 long years. It just proves your articles are very much worthy. However one thing I would like to know (if you do not mind) is ... can one earn at least $10-$15 by writing hubs for 8 hours per day...
I like xomba ad bloggers.com..but they have different stuff on them...i try not to duplicate...like a lot of us once I find an idea that I like I may write several different article type writings on one subject...that isnt considered dupliction is it?
A very informative hub. Great information and it will certainly save a lot of research time for me. Thanks.
Thanks for the awesome list, pgrundy! I think I'll plan my next vacation day around checking out your suggestions!
Thanks for doing all this for the many online writers out there.
Very useful information. Well researched.
Good sites and links. You get an A+!!!! I completely agree with you on Poets and Writers site. A class act.
Thanks for the info! I'm brand new to writing online and appreciate you putting this list together!
You don't appear to need more positive feedback, here's more anyway! Though I'm familiar with these sites, many writers aren't, so job well done. But my favorite of the group is .............Poets & Writers. They have info no other site has and a wonderful professional tone.
Really useful list. Cheers.

Pam, you do everyone else's homework. You deserve an apple.
