Tension Engagement Rings: a Guide

Tension engagement rings are an increasingly sought-after option for today's couple. Tension refers to a setting style wherein the gemstone is held in place by extreme pressure, or tension, rather than by prongs or other visible mounting apparatus.

The result is that the stone looks suspended in place, as if it is somehow hovering there between each side of the band. For a purist, it is the ultimate way to display a diamond or other gem unhindered by brackets and such.

While it might seem precarious, or that the tension setting might not hold the stone as securely as old-fashioned settings would - the complete opposite is true. The pressure holding your precious gem in place is so intense that it will not budge. Probably ever.

Tension setting is considered to be the strongest method, and tension-set jewelery seldom (if ever) needs to be re-set or tightened as it never comes "loose." There are no brackets or prongs to bend, break, or otherwise fail.

There is just the band and the stone, held together perfectly with nothing in between them to complicate the symbiosis. It is strength through simplicity, with the added appeal of being one of the most stunning ways to showcase an engagement gem.

While an engagement ring should certainly be beautiful and as unique as the couple wants it to be, it is something that will likely be worn on a daily basis for many years to come. That being the case, it's important to decide what type of setting is going to be practical for your lifestyle.

A large stone or arrangement of stones can extend out beyond a ring's band pretty far, which can cause several annoyances for its wearer. They tend to snag on fabric and in hair, and catch on all kinds of random objects throughout the course of a day. Also, they sometimes scratch people's skin - especially upsetting when handling babies and children!

Tension rings allow the stone to be held down essentially inside the band, creating a continuous and fluid line. The smooth transition from stone to band is not only aesthetically pleasing, but really makes more sense given that most women actually use their hands on a regular basis!

Tension rings can be a beautiful, fashionable alternative to traditionally set engagement rings. There are so many styles available, and you can also have one custom crafted by a jeweler. Congratulations on being in love! Have fun choosing a ring that is as lovely and amazing as the one who will wear it.

RooBee - so pretty. And the rings are rather shiny too :)

Informative and enough to make lots of women run and out buy one, I should think.

Ah, thanks Dohn - you are such a great guy!

Thanks to you, too, Matt. I actually saw a freeway sign advertising tension rings, got curious myself and (after a wee bit of keyword research) went to hubbin'. Glad you came by!

Hello, froggy-d - you always bring the red to m'cheeks (facial cheeks, of course!!). I would hope they'd run out to buy one (or three!) as well. Thank you, my friend! :)
