We must not confuse space or geographic space with territory, because they are not synonymous.

The term territory when used must be associate to an earth extension without the human presence, or the physical extension of a state that has its borders defined by the borders with other states and on this territory exerts sovereignty.

The geographic space only arises after the territory to be worked, to be modified or to be transformed by men, or when there are prints in the landscape that marks of his performance and social organization.

By means of its work, it transforms the natural resources into useful and indispensable things to its life, such: foods, clothes, room, energy, etc...

Spaces considered natural are those that did not undergo any human intervention. Today they practically does not exist, because the places unknown by mankind are extremely rare or that they did not undergo his intervention.

Geographic space is not static. It is undergoing modifications in agreement with the relation society (men) and nature. The society modifies its space, organizing it with its necessities and possibilities, that they vary from a place to another, and of a time for another one.

An example of different times and different forms of space organization, is that during the colonial period, a trip between Santos and São Paulo, done in the animal back lasted days. At the moment, with the use of automobiles, asphalt roads, bridges and tunnels, that trip is made in less than one hour
