Testosterone and Male Libido
76What is Testosterone?
Testosterone is the principle male sex hormone. It is secreted by the testes in males, though small quantities are secreted by adrenal glands as well. In an adult male it primarily helps maintain:
- sex drive or male libido
- muscle mass and strength
- bone strength and
- mood levels
Why is Testosterone so Important
Testosterone is highly important as the above functions indicate. As a matter of fact it is the singlemost factor in giving you your male characterstics. An average male has forty to sixty times more testosterone than an adult female.
It is the presence of this hormone that makes man more aggressive than females.
When and Why do men Lose Testosterone
Men generally start losing testosterone after the age of 30. As men start aging, ther body undergoes hormonal changes as well. The production of Testosterone slows down and in a period of a decade men lose around 10% of their testosterone. Hence, by the time you are 40 you start feeling the effects of a dip in testosterone.
Andropause and it's Symptoms
This condition is often termed as Andropause or the male Menopause. The symptoms of Andropause include:
- Low libido or sex drive
- Lack of energy
- Weight and fat gain
- Loss of muscle
- Hair loss
- Excessive sweating
- Irritability
But perhaps the most disturbing effect for any man is sexual or erectile dysfunction. It certainly makes you think that something is wrong and needs to be taken care of.
Psychological and Physical factors Affecting Male Libido
There are a lot of facotrs that can be behind your low male libido. They could either be psychological or phsucal factors.
Among the psychological factors, stress is the major culprit. We live in a fast pace world and often we do not even have time for ourselves. Competeing every day for good results and money can take it's toll on your libido. there are times when you are just not interested in having sex. Apart from stress, feelings of guilt and depression can also affect you highly.
Just yesterday, I was reading a post in a men's forum, how a young guy lost his libido after a break up.
Ohsical factors on the other hand refer to the hormonal changes taking place in your body with age. I have already talked about it above how a dip in testosterone can lead to a low libido.
How to raise Testosterone Naturally
Testosterone can be restored with Lifestyle Changes!
Though the most common cause of a decline in Testosterone is aging, other factors affecting it include emotional stress, overtraining, lack of physical activity, excessive use of alcohol prescription or recreational medicines and certain other diseases.
Testosterone is also affected by bio social events. For example, your testosterone will go up before a sporting event. Normally testosterone is 30% higher in the morning than the evening. this expalins why you wake up with erections. In fact, loss of morning erections show that something is amiss.
Diet changes
Eat more protein, fruits and vegetables and reduce excessive carbohydrate intake specially of simple sugars and starches like grains, potatoes, pasta.
Eat Fat! Essential fats such as the omega 3 fatty acids found in fish and flaxseed as well as saturated fats are essential for normal testosterone production. All steroid hormones are produced from cholesterol and when fats are deficient in the diet, this process will be inhibited.
Studies clearly indicate that low fat diets results in lower testosterone levels while those higher in protein, lower in carbohydrate and moderate in fat cause the greatest sustained levels of testosterone and growth hormone.
Exercise
Both the lack of physical activity and too much of it is going to make your tesosterone levels dip.
Studies show that with an exercise of 45-60 minutes your testosterone levels will increase and any more after that is going to have a reverse effect on testosterone since cortisol begins to increase and testosterone will decline.

Studies clearly indicate that low fat diets results in lower testosterone levels while those higher in protein, lower in carbohydrate and moderate in fat cause the greatest sustained levels of testosterone and growth hormone.
A recent study demonstrated the influence of diet on pre and post exercise testosterone and cortisol. After exercise with bench press and squat to failure, testosterone and cortisol were measured. Those men who were on a diet with a higher protein/carbohydrate ratio and percent fat content had the largest increase in testosterone and the smallest rise in cortisol.
You must train and eat smart to minimize the catabolic and maximize the anabolic effects of exercise.
If your diet is very low in fat and high in complex carbohydrates and fiber, your testosterone levels may remain very low and you will never make the changes in muscle mass and strength that you desire.
Great information. There are plenty of us older than 30 that can use a llittle boost. Thanks for sharing.
I wrote this article myself. I don't understand how you want to add this hub to your's

Hi, very interesting to read your hub. I find that emotional stress can affect a man's libido (ie sex drive). Sometimes, men find it hard to hear a woman talk about their sex drive, so it is great to have you addressing this issue here.
Men are very shy about their sexual health, until it is almost too late (for the relationship). You mentioned weight gain above as one of the possible symptoms. How can a man eat more fat (as you recommend) and not gain weight? Fat is a tough one for both men and women. Especially when we get older. Fat around the middle is hard to shift.
Could you please explain about the fat thing?
Thanks.
